Younger son's brother-in-law was over the other day and had a question. He is involved in the outdoor sports retail business so his question made me shudder a little. "Got a corporate 'clays' shoot coming up in a week and wondered if you had something I could use?"
My first question was "trap, skeet, sporting?". Shrug. "Well, they said several positions". "Positions or stands?". "Yeah, stands".
He has shot five stand so I fixed him up with a Beretta o/u and i.c / mod tubes. I'm curious to see what come of it. Best case I'll hear he won something and wants to buy the gun. Worst, he'll drop it in the gravel in which case he will still buy it. My wife said she could tell I was a little put off.

I agree with CPE above. Make sure St Peter remembers this when you arrive at the Pearly Gates.

I have a couple of synthetic stocked semis that I will loan, but my nice guns don’t get loaned out.

Hopefully, he enjoys the experience. The more, the merrier.

You have to realize whenever you loan something out there is risk involved and your just as much at fault for that item getting (or not) damaged as the person you loaned it to. A worry free solution would probably be having a cheap loaner gun around. Who knows maybe you just found yourself a lifetime shooting partner.

Another worry free policy is mine, and that is this: I do not loan my guns. Had a beautiful S&W semiauto 12 come back to me rusted to the case. In one fell swoop, he returned a gun, bought a gun at full market value replacement cost, and set my policy in stone. As to other things, like my tools, I will come and help you, or I will loan them for your use, but if you're borrowing my tools to make money, you should be buying your own, or, barring that, there are rental centers specifically for that. Home Depot has a fine selection.

I know the risks involved. I also didn't loan my main trap gun, my main skeet gun or my backup. This guy has come down to deer camp and hunted with us, pulls his own weight. I was just a little surprised that he wanted to borrow a gun for an event the details of which he was unsure.

I was more shocked "he is in the business" and doesn't own A shotgun, much less several. Then, not knowing what the event entails.
I would venture a guess, he isn't going to win or place high. No disrespect, just experience.

I have a Savage 67E 12ga pump. THAT is my loaner. Others do not loaned.

You did just fine. He's family. AND, it's only a gun.

Must be either
A- a guy that you've done favors for previously and are already on those terms for him to consider asking to borrow a gun, or
B- He's seriously lacking good sense.

I can't imagine my dad loaning my wife's brother much more than a couple bucks gas money if he broke down along the road. Nothing against him...just not his responsibility.

Going to be interesting to see how this turns out.
Wishing you the best and it will probably turn out just fine. Your son knows you and must have felt comfortable with you loaning a gun.
