Today a pistol in a shop’s ‘pre owned’ display case caught my eye, so I had a closer look at it. It’s a FEG marked Harrisburg PA. It looked brand new and original, not a mark on it, except for a Pachmayr wrap around rubber grip. I was tempted, but I resisted. Price is $399. How do they shoot? I have an original Hi Power made in 1969, so I don’t really need this, but it was so nice looking. I don’t know much about Hi Powers other than what I’ve read, and that there’s lots of authorized copies and fakes out there. Should I go get it, good deal, or forget about it? Is that a reasonable price, or no? Thanks!

OMG, for $399??? YES!!!!

My buddy has one, and aside from the finish machining inside, it is the equal of my T-series. Deep bluing, accurate- even got a nice ring hammer and flared mag well I wish my FN had......

The FEGs evolved over the years in minor details, some even having a rather gross looking ventilated top rib, but for the most part they are FN compatible with regard to parts.

We had some issues with the Hungarian magazines it came with, but FN/Mecgar mags ran perfectly.

Really nice gun, do it do it.:)

PS- this is the single action FEG, correct? They made a DA gun that looks a little like a HiPower, but is a mechanical copy of the S&W M59. I had one of those and it jammed constantly.....

I left one behind a couple of months ago that was priced at that. I knew that I could recoup the money if I'd bought it and then regretted it, but I also knew I'd never get around to shooting it. I already have too many guns that I bought intending to shoot that have yet to be by me. I left it for someone else, but I knew that was a reasonable, maybe even good, price.

that’s exactly what I was thinking.

This one looks identical to my BHP, it does not have the safety lever on the slide.
Uh-oh! Never mind prev. post. Edited. I misread the OP's post. Skipped right over the word "not"...

They're nice. I have one now, have had many in the past. For some reason, I buy one, shoot it a lot, get bored with it and sell it for a stupid high profit. I think the one I have now I may just keep. For a while longer, at least.

We had to destroy crates of brand new FEG Hi Power clones when clearing Iraqi bunkers in 1991. They seemed to be everywhere. Unfortunately we were not allowed to bring any home with us. If it is a true FEG Hi Power clone and $399 I say go for it.

I recall with some clarity at age 14 working at an LGS and seeing those FEGs in the catalog new. I begged and pleaded to no avail for my father to buy one as they appeared to my teen eyes to be the epitome of what a pistol should be.

Alas I’ve not seen one in years of any decent shape round here but did track down a $250 FEG copy of the PPK. That one goes with me frequently, both to the range and for concealment.

Great purchase and solid price!

I turned a few down a couple years back, at that price. Granted, this was before the Hi Power was discontinued, and I already had my FEG for about $200. I pointed my brother at a Kareen a few years back for $239. The FEG and the Kareen were identical, and I believe both made by FEG.

Yes, in today's world, that's a good price.

FEG made great guns, they may not have put the time into some cosmetic details, but I'd have little doubt that anything FEG is as mechanically good as any BHP or Walther. And their HP's are dimensionally correct clones. I have a HP, and one of their PA7's or whatever it is (PA-63, but with a 32 acp barrel. I had a PA-63 but sold it).

So I returned to the store and there it was. With veteran’s discount it was $379, with 2 magazines. They told me an employee traded it in. Next is a deep clean and trip to the range. BassPro Katy Mills, Texas. View attachment 1029758View attachment 1029759
Sounds like they even lowball their employees.

Nice deal for you.

Good luck with your new gun!

My early 1990’s FEG SMK .380 felt better in my hands and was more reliable than the PPK/s it was modeled after, so it became my on duty backup that I wore for countless shifts.

The PPK/s left my possession with no regrets, the SMK remains after 28-odd years. Id’a jumped on that FEG Hi Power as well, nice catch .

Stay safe.
