It appears that the deer in the foreground (this includes the dinky 4 pt.) are on a slight rise or ridge besides being closer. This makes them appear taller also. The slope of the ridge also foreshortens the apparent distance.

However, I killed an 8 pt. years ago that I knew scored over 115 gross. He scored 98. He was smaller overall than the average deer in that area. His skull really showed the difference when placed next to a normal-sized deer skull. It was even smaller than a doe's skull.

Shortly before dark today this guy came out of the woods next to me and ambled down along the edge of the woods going away from the house. I was indoors and grabbed the camera and got him before he got too far away. IMG_4615.JPG .... He proceeded about 50 yards further and stopped right in front of a trail cam that looks out from the woods. Stood there for half a minute or so and I figured on having a good shot of him. After he left I went down and swapped SD cards and sure enough there he was right where I figured would be a good photo location. WGI_0564.JPG .. At first I was surprised he still had his rack but then I recalled that it's still a bit early to think about shed hunting.

I'm in WNY as well. When do you start shed hunting?

...... I've heard that late winter, early spring before things start to green up, is the best time. Have yet to do it real seriously but this year I may try a bit harder. I just walk around the woods next door and on my friends property where I have trail cams and I know there's bucks in vicinity. Only started shed hunting a couple years ago and haven't found any yet. Only thing I found so far was a few bones and a skull from a doe that probably got hit by a vehicle and made it about 100 yards into the woods.
