so. this past weekend, i took my RIA 1911 to the range twice. when i left the 2d time, i was reflecting on how much i love shooting the 1911. i decided that, at least for awhile, i'm just going to be a "1911 Guy". that trigger is sweetly addictive. so i decided i would take my name off the waiting list for the SA-35 and forget, for now, about the CZ-75 i'd been looking at.

i had funds allocated for the SA-35 which were now suddenly freed up so of course i charged on up there and came away with a new Ronin Operator 5" in 9mm. it's a two-tone barbeque gun, pretty pretty. but the story doesn't end there. i went to the other LGS to get some ammo cause he's cheaper. and there in his case was a very lightly used Kimber Custom .45 in stainless. i asked what he would give me in trade for a SW 617. i liked the offer, so i ran home, cleaned off the cylinder face, and went back and got the Kimber. i never thought i'd ever be able to afford a Kimber but here it was in my hot little hand, all mine.

yesterday, i took them both to the range and put about 50-60 through each. the Springfield performed flawlessly. i've only ever shot about 7-8 rounds of 9mm before yesterday. i found it very very pleasant to shoot and i'm looking forward to thousands more.

the Kimber was a bit balky. about every other magazine i would have a failure to go into battery. i would shove on the back of the slide and then it would fire. this doesn't worry me because i know it needs to be broke-in. this gun is used, but i think that whoever had it shot it a few times and decided to get rid of it because it wasn't working perfectly. i don't blame him, but i don't mind to work with it. i believe it will be just fine after a few hundred shots.

(i know this thread needs pictures. i will try to get my brilliant daughter to help me get some up later.)

I'm jealous... looking locally for a Ronin 4.25" 9mm to match up with my .45 model. I have a Range Officer 5" 9mm which is great, but really like the weight and feel of the Ronin forged alloy frame. I wish you a lot of happy range time with it.

they had a 4.25 model of this Ronin and it looked very sweet, but i had to do the 5".

i'm building a Stairway of 1911. i've got a 22, 9, and two .45s. the niches to be filled in are.380, which will be a Baby Rock, and .38 Super. i keep going back and forth in my thoughts about a .40 SW. i don't think i really want a 10mm.

Impulse buying. Love it. Apparently Kentuck doesn’t have a waiting period, here in the Ocean State a 7 business day waiting period kinda puts a damper on that. :(

here's the rungs of the stairway, as it is today. how i got that idiot mark on the end of my RI, i don't know. that pistol was greatly improved by the rubber grips.

everybody ought to own a colt-walther 1911-22. fun, accurate, and you can afford to shoot it!

Nice finds.

I have been on the lookout for a 9mm 1911.
Prefer a Commander, but will not pass up a good deal on any.

Kimber does seem to require some break in.
A co-worker bought 2, from guys who bought them new and then sold, not long after.
He done a good cleaning and put 500 rounds through each. 1 needed a new extractor, it broke around 150 rounds.
They are totally reliable, now.

i can understand why someone would get upset after laying out the cash for a Kimber, if it didn't work flawlessly from round one. but my small bit of experience with 1911's tells me they need some time and loving care, even the higher-dollar ones. that RI above was the first 45 i ever shot. i bought it at rural king and took it straight to the range, no clean, no lube. it screwed up pretty much every mag. i finally started putting in just 3 rounds at a time. but i wasn't worried about it. took it home lubed it (but not field strip cleaned), took it back and it ran much better - not perfect yet. field stripped it, and it just got better and better. that's what i expect from the Kimber. it just needs some loving attention...and i'm just the guy to give it to her.

but i can see why somebody might get upset, after shelling out a thousand bucks or so.

I have 380, 9mm, 40 caliber, and 45acp.

It would be cool to have one of those 32's, also. I've bid on them more than once. :)

I got the 40 NiB. It had a defect and had to go back to the factory two or three times before it functioned properly. The other three have given me zero problems. The 9mm is a big favorite among my shooting buddies.

would somebody who knows explain to me about guide rods? why do some have longer ones and others shorter ones? Hickok45 says he hates full length guide rods, but i don't understand what difference it makes.

what a lovely pile of ordinance!

i think that i might have to fill in the .32 rung with a 1903 pocket pistol. i understand there have been some clones made.

so did you finally get the .40 straightened out? i keep wondering about one, but i read a lot of negatives about that caliber in 1911. i've got about 250 of them on my shelf and nothing to shoot it in. a .40 would be a cool rung on the Stairway.

that colt govt 380 is awesome!

Love the Ronin 4.25” model; I found it to be a sweet balance of weight, size, capacity and shootability .
Once I put in a Cylinder & Slide 4.5 lb trigger kit it lowered the trigger pull weight a pound and “crisped” it up as well. :)

I liked it so much I bought a matching-ish two-toned little brother, a Kimber Ultra Carry II in 9mm. This is also a fun and reliable little handful.

I’m looking for a 5” 9mm now to match up with my SA loaded .45 ACP 5”. I may seek out a Kimber Stainless Target II to fill that void.

The current 1911 family and a Micro 9 cousin…

Stay safe.

Thank you! :)

I have a 1903 and I really like it. It's not a 1911, but it's a nice pistol. The sights are tiny, though. I'll get one of the little Spanish ones eventually. Until then, my Beretta 81 is my favorite 32acp to shoot. There may still be some surplus ones out there at reasonable prices.

The 40 caliber 1911 is a double-stack RIA. I sent it back to the factory twice. They changed all of the springs and stuff on it a couple of times and it still didn't work right. I sent it in the third time demanding a new pistol. I got a nice email from a manager saying they didn't make those anymore, but he would like a chance to have a senior gunsmith look at it. I agreed and the real gunsmith figured out it had something to do with (fill in the blank, I can't remember) and actually fixed it. It won't shoot my FiL's reloads, but it's 100% with factory ammo. I didn't have to pay for any of the shipping.

40 is a nice caliber for a 1911, IMHO. It's a tiny bit more zippy than 45acp, but in a fun way. A full-sized 1911 with a steel frame is a good platform for 40 caliber. The recoil is pleasant. 40 can be snappy in a smaller polymer pistol, but it's no problem at all in a big steel pistol.

Yeah, the Government 380's are awesome. They aren't blowback, they have a locking breech. They're about the size of a Makarov or maybe a little smaller. I bought mine for my daughter to shoot back when she was bored of 22's and 32's but still wanted gentle recoil. It's very easy to shoot. I would highly recommend them.

I didn't know Kimber made such a piece of junk when I bought this one (Pro Carry II). I just thought it was pretty. ;)

I don't shoot it a lot, but it's worked just fine when I have, even with a couple of cheap Ebay magazines. I sort of wish it was a 9mm because I reload for 9mm. I'd shoot it more in that case. I've never thought about carrying it although I do at least have a holster for it.

I carry it's little brother.

KimberMicro9.jpg

A little Kimber Micro 9. More of a 1911 "style" I believe, but it's a shooting little trick. A little snappy, but nothing awful. The grips are a little slick for a long range session but look too nice to change out. Weighs next to nothing. Darn good little gun.

Nothing wrong with a "Two Gun Tuesday" especially when they're both 1911s!

I have several 1911s and 1911-like guns to play with and some of them may have been purchased on a Tuesday, but never two at a time!

First up would be my Colt Lightweight Government Model in .45 ACP which is my all purpose gun for use at the range but light enough for concealed carry.

Next is my Colt Government Model which I got for two reasons: 1) to use it mainly as a range gun for testing new loads in it and 2) because it had "100 Years of Service" roll marked on the forward part of the slide!

My favorite .45 is a limited edition Colt Combat Commander, from Colt's own Custom Shop, which I got over 40 years ago! As accurate as a Gold Cup but not as finicky about ammo and extremely reliable as well.

Small but mighty is how I think about my Colt Officer's Model ACP though it's bark is worse than it's bite! Nice and compact in size and easy to handle mainly because it's an all steel model, it does very well with 185 gr. and 200 gr. ammo.

Getting away from the .45s, I have a Colt Commander in .38 Super, along with a 9mm. barrel assembly, to make this my very own "Convertible Gun".

While my Colt Mustang may be a bit on the diminutive side, it still shares it's 1911 heritage with the rest of the family quite nicely.

My version of a .22 1911 is to start with a 1911 frame, put it all together, and then add a first rate slide assembly (this one is a 2211 model by TacSol), and have some fun with it at the range!
