I picked up a new-to-me Kimber Ultra Carry II in 9mm as a little cousin to the Springfield Ronin 4.25” 9mm I bought last month. They have the same two-tone finish so they do look amazingly related ;) .

I took these two with a few boxes of WWB 124 gr FMJ, along with a Ruger SR1911 4.25” and a Springfield loaded 5”, both in .45 ACP. They were fed WWB 230 gr FMJ.

The final 1911-ish member was a Kimber Micro 9. I wanted to shoot this alongside the Ultra Carry, which is larger and heavier but has better ergonomics and “feel” in my hands.

The UC II is a stubby-barrelled 1911 with a full diameter but abbreviated-length grip. In 9mm the Mag held 8, one less than the Ronin does. The sights are no-snag fixed with large dots that pick up easily. The barrel is a fat, bushingless design with a unique profile. The recoil spring guide is a telescoping model and the slide is pretty stiff to rack, so users with limited grip strength will struggle with this gun. Over 100 rounds went through the UC II today and operation was flawless, so clearly the heavy recoil spring is required. All the controls are standard 1911 that worked well from the get go.

Some pics of the UC II and a group shot…

Next up, range time….

At 10 yards I shot the guns cold, no warm up or prior targets before these. 2-hand standing trying to stay at 1 to 1.5 seconds time between shots. I use these B-27 X and 10-ring sized multi-targets since the B-27 is the official target we use at work to qualify. If I can stay in this zone I’m golden .

All of the 1911’s did exactly what 1911 fans expect; kept recoil controlled so the shots went where I wanted them to go. I dropped an occasional shot into the 9-ring area, all being 100% the result of my flinch-itis rearing it’s ugly head. (Proves I’m certainly human and never gonna be a master-level shot :(.)

I then moved in to 7 yards and shot as fast as the range would let me. The Ronin put them all (9) into one hole on the first mag I fired, then I got cocky and opened it up on the second. The others all fed and shot well, no hiccups.

I then used a rest for my wrist on the bench to shoot 10 shots at 20 yds. The 9mms were all so-so, but the .45’s shot well for me.

Im impressed with the UC II. Recoil was mild, it felt better than the Micro 9 and shot as well as the Ronin during my very brief trip.

I’m heading towards the 9mm more and more, the .45’s started to sting a touch after about 7-8 shots when using the padded block at the bench. :(

Stay safe.

I’m a latecomer to the 1911, and am looking to purchase my second one soon. Really like seeing the range report and the nice sextet @bannockburn!

I joined the 9mm 1911 club just last month so I’m a latecomer to that aspect, too. While the .45’s aren’t brutal to shoot, I am starting to feel the cumulative recoil of the .45 after 100 rounds or so go down range. The 9mm doesn’t seem to do that to me unless I’m shooting a micro pistol.

A very nice quintet of 1911s! They all shoot as great as they look!

My 1911 sextet, which are mostly .45s with two .38s for good measure, looks like this:

Awesome line up of Colts there, Bannockburn! I don’t have any Colt semi autos, just a pair of .38 revolvers. Sooner or later I’ll need to rectify this manufacturer deficiency in my line up. ;)

Great pics, Rio. Those 2 tones look pretty sharp in my opinion!

I loved the old 1970-80 era Pachmayr custom pistols with the blued slide/hard chrome frames. These do bring me back to that era for sure ;).
