Does anyone else EDC concealed a L frame, Ruger GP100, or other larger frame revolvers? If so, please share your experience.

I just picked up a 2.5" and 3" S&W 686. I actually like the 2.5" the most, and my plan is to start carrying it on a regular basis after I get some rounds down range. IMHO it's not as huge and bulky as the internet would have it seem. I don't foresee any problems being able to conceal it.

Here are some pictures of the two new 686+ revolvers I acquire along with some comparison photos.

Good looking revolvers. I know some do carry larger frame revolvers without any problems. I've tried it a few times over the years and for comfort reasons, and the attire thats required in a hot and humid climate that I live in, makes it difficult to do. I find it easier to work with a smaller revolver like a J-frame, Security Six or the SP101.

I carry a kframe 2.5inch model 66 sometimes. It's in a Bianchi #3 iwb.
I wore it on a 2000mi road trip, no problem. Quite comfortable actually...a quality holster and belt is key. Don't skimp there.
I was going to purchase that very same holster, but it received a few bad reviews for riding way to high. How is it working for you?

I second the sour dough pancake from simply rugged along with one of their awesome 1.75” belts. I can conceal my 6” gp100 and Blackhawk with the proper flannel shirt or jacket. Carries a heavy gun well, when I first got mine I was working around the farm and I had a sudden panic that I had somehow lost my gun. Then came the quick realization that it’s still right where it’s supposed to be, the holster just does it’s job so well you can forget you have a 40oz revolver on your hip.
I’m talking Outside the waste band but with those short barrels get the straps for the iwb option

I’ve carried a 4” S&W mountain gun N frame 44 mag- not to difficult with a over shirt or jacket

Then a 3” N frame 624… Just as easy if not more with the smaller barrel. I feel a 3” is much dif than a 4”

I carry my 3” Smiths far more lately than a 4”

Yet I like my 4” 686+ 357- awaiting a custom cross draw Black leather and lined w/ suede for it.

Think my Favorite is the 3” 696 no dash
Even got a extra new cylinder and Barrel…. Just in case

I like mine. It is a quality holster. I normally don't use ant retention for a iwb holster, but this works as a sweat shield/hammer cover. It also fully covers the trigger. It is adjustable for cant. It does, however, ride pretty high. It is a good driving holster, and a good concealment holster.

Best wishes.

You have a 5” 29 S&W , and you carry it????

That’s a mighty rare Revolver
it was one of my grails, I carry it infrequently now, not due to rarity but due to school. I prefer to just pocket carry something around where other college students are much less likely to "make me out" as can SOMETIMES happen with traditional IWB carry

I occationally carry a flattop blackhawk in a simplyrugged sourdough. Both inside and outside the waist band. It's comfortable both ways. You can forget it's there OWB. I use their 1.75" belt too. The angle and ride height are perfect for me. I carry at the 3:00 position with the barrel just past my hip bone.

I'm currently trying out the gp100 for a few days and it's okay too, but in a tagua pancake holster marked 1836. The angle could be a touch more. In a simplyrugged sourdough it'd be even better.

I found that my 6” gp100 fits very nicely into my sourdough pancake that was made for my 5.5” 44 spl flattop Blackhawk . You might wanna give it a try.

This Must be a Troll of Some sorts… Why would anyone choose a Revolver to carry over say… a Glock 20 with high capacity. Silly nonsense….. Revolvers are outdated and can’t work for any purpose. To carry a 5-6-7 shot capacity revolver is like carrying a musket.

*Said With Great amounts of Sarcasm, As Revolvers are all I carry 99% of the time

I have successfully concealed an X frame for weeks at a time - it still is a big, heavy gun, and I prefer a K frame for the task - but it can be done.

The secrets, for me, include a heavy belt with a stiffener, non-stretch leather suspenders, and a Tucker "Texas Heritage" holster. That now is the combination I use for everything. The N frames are pretty comfortable, and K frames nearly dissappear.

I have been wearing a USFA Single Action, with a 4-3/4” barrel, all day, in a Thad Rybka IWB rig, with a Milt Sparks belt. Yesterday, and, I think, the previous couple of days, too, I carried the same sixgun inside a Safepacker. This sixgun is built on the Colt SAA pattern.

It is more normal for me to carry a Ruger GP100, 3” or 4”, or a Ruger Speed Six, in one of several OWB holsters, or, a slightly smaller Safepacker. Only on relatively rare occasions is my primary firearm a Ruger SP101.

I am having an IWB and OWB holster made by Nelson Holsters, but it will be a while before I get them. I have been carrying jframe sized revolvers for years, but decided to move up in size.

I am more of a S&W guy. You seem more like a Ruger guy. I always wanted a 2.5" Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan after watching Dwayne Johnson's 2010 film Faster.

I do from time to time, You can even conceal an N frame with the right setup AND it being comfortable, I carried a 5 inch 29 or 629 for quite a awhile, I used a simply rugged sourdough with straps, I highly recommend a solid belt though.
I carried the 5” 629 classic (full lug) for a winter in a Tex Shoemaker pancake that they made for me.
It was a hoss, but as the guys said a good gun belt makes even these larger gun easy to tote.

The 686 isn’t tough to conceal with the good holsters the guys have recommended. Another option is a Bianchi (now Galco) Miami Classic shoulder rig. I carried a 2.5” Model 19 in one for years, it hid beautifully under anything from a jacket to a button down shirt.

Stay safe.

Large revolver, no. But, I routinely carry a Smith & Wesson snubby, in either 38, or a Ruger LCR in 9 mm.
Alternatively, I carry a Ruger SP101 in 357. I carry the .38 Snubby IWB with HipGrips. Everything else is owb in a Fobus.

And I always have an NAA 5 shot 22 revolver in my pocket.

I've carried a four-inch Police Service Six in an IWB holster worn between the pants and belt (inside-the-belt carry.) I don't do it regularly because of the need for a long cover garment, but it is surprisingly comfortable.

The late Bikerdoc here once mentioned carrying the same model in a boot at one time, prompting me to try it. It actually works well, opening inside-the-boot carry as being considerable for quite a few possibilities.

Bikerdoc writes:

I did indeed carry a 4 INCH Ruger 357 police service six in my cowboy boot. Left boot right side.
I modified an IWB holster to do it.

It was a time when my family was threatened by one of my grand kids, estranged dad's, so for six months,or so I was loaded for bear, and hyper vigilant.

I use the same holster with IWB straps and a stiff gun belt for a 5" GP100(43.5 oz) & 4" GP100(40 oz). It's amazing how well they carry on long hikes IWB in the Sourdough pancake.

Have a El Paso Belt holster that holds my 6” model 29-2.
It can be done- Sure, Yet like the Gentlemen who posted a IWB carry for his X frame…. a bit “Challenging”.
Small barrel N frames are about max for me- Except when hunting.
My 3” N frame 624 had been carried frequently in a Miami classic. It certainly works and isn’t difficult to conceal. Or with a modified Grip adapter and A Barami Hip Grip, A Larger frame revolver becomes a easy to carry inside belt gun. The Smaller 296 of course very easy.
I easily carry my 624 on a good belt and holster…. it’s robust yet with Hot ammo- it’s very close to a magnum from a short barrel. 63C406F7-70B2-4256-B33D-EE404F7ACD48.jpeg

Go for a longer barrel. You know what they say, it's not the barrel that's hard to conceal, it's the grip. I've found this to be true, but that it's not that hard to conceal large grips either so long as they're not right on the hip. The other challenge is bearing the weight. I found a Kydex or steel reinforced belt helps (1/4" thick leather alone was not enough), but that suspenders are much better for bearing the weight than any belt. I tried a shoulder holster for a while, but did not care for it. It did not conceal very well and sweeping during the crossdraw is a serious liability -- certainly not something that can be practiced on any firing line. So I carry strongside.
