So bought a borescope just for fun. but this is what I see when I look down the barrel of my savage Trophy XP 308

Somehow this is not what I expected to see. Can someone help me identify what I'm looking at? the bore looks like someone ran a damn tap and die down it to my eyes. is that chattering? it's all the way around, and down the barrel. and pretty constant.

so much for thinking it was clean then. Wonder if those marks are enough to be the cause of the less than stellar accuracy. The rifle hasn't been terrible, but neither has it lived up to the promise others seem to get out of similar models.

I bought a borescope a few years back. Worse mistake any OCD person can make! The old 'levels of clean' analogy sticks.

Yes, that is bad chatter marks. Last I recall Savage button rifles their barrels. Looks like that one might have been underlubed when pressing the button through. I suspect the gun will shoot better dirty with a little copper buildup. You could try calling Savage and sending them a pic to see if they will swap it out under warranty if it shoots poorly.

How does it shoot? Accurate? Any problems?
Are you using quality ammo, off a rest.
Rule out as much as you can.
If all is good dont go trying to fix somthing that is not broke.
I have a bore scope too and have barrels that look like a drain pipe, but they are accurate.

It shoots OK. not as good as some, but it's not a shotgun either. Perhaps it's most redeeming quality is how consistent it is. over the years I've run every kind of 308 ammo from 110 to 180 gr through it as well as a host of various handloads. it consistently shoots 1.5-2 MOA. give or take. The odd thing is it shoots everything like that from rem core lokt to FGMM. 4" at 200 yards all day. hot or cold barrel. rest or not. The placement of the pattern shifts depending on the round used. but it's always the same pattern size. From that respect it's probably the greatest grab and go hunting rifle I have. I can grab a rando box of ammo from anywhere and not bother with sighting it. I just was just always hoping I would find a load that would give me that nice tight group. and it's never happened.

Sometimes your better off just not knowing .
Now what ... time to get a new custom rifled barrel or learn how to lap a barrel smooth ?
That bad boy does look rather rough ... how does it shoot ?
I had an old 7x57 Spanish Mauser , model 93 , that had a sewer pipe barrel . I used a lap and elbow grease to get it as smooth as possible , it shoots decent deer hunting sized groups so I don't look too hard down the barrel .
I Clean it often with J-B Bore Compound to smooth it up and carry on like I have good sense !

My barrel cleaned up ...but that photo shows some deep chatter marks ... they may not can be removed with lapping but a smooth barrel that shoots a decent group might be in the cards and the best you can do .

The manufacturer may make good on an obvious production flaw or they may not but, I would certainly contact and ask.
Four inches at 200 yards is not competition performance but it is very acceptable hunting performance. In turn without manufacturer assistance, there is always a new barrel opportunity if you value the rifle enough - you may also just replace it with a new rifle if it bothers you that much. Fundamentally, it is up to your OCD tolerance level and your wallet.

I have a 20" AR barrel that looks like that through the bore scope, I was initially disappointed but so far it has turned in better groups than some others that cost twice as much. I expected it would at least take a little more work to clean it after a match but it really doesn't seem much different there either. It wasn't the barrel I wanted at the time, but I needed one and it was available. I have since received my backordered first preference, but that chattered barrel will be staying put as long as it shoots. The chatter marks may be ugly, but they do not automatically make a barrel trash....

Somehow this is not what I expected to see.
For a Savage that’s about right. Mine looks like a board walk on a beach.

I like the little gouge at the muzzle…

Still shoots ten rounds like this.
