Impromptu metal detector finds kids with 21 weapons at Brooklyn school day after student gun bust

Weapons of any type are generally a no-go on K-12 school property. I'm sure there are some exceptions somewhere and the laws vary wildly, but for the most part, school districts across the board prohibit this if it's not already state law.
Yes, but my point was that in NYC brass knuckles and any knife with a blade over 4" (as well as shorter ones of specific types) are even illegal for adults not on school property.

Not so much fake news as distracting news, diverts attention from problems such as drug use, teenage pregnancy, welfare dependency, etc. I recall a story from NYC some years ago, a student brought a gun to school, shot 3 other students-who were harassing and bullying him. And remember kids leave school and go out onto mean streets.

What changed? I could go on but I'm sure most here know the answers and no sense beating a dead horse. We never had any issues back in the day. No police officers, no metal detectors and so on. We carried rifles in our vehicle gun racks in the school parking lot. America is headed down the tubes fast what will be done about it? Carry on...

If schools are such a safe place why do 21 students feel the need to protect themselves?

I wonder, if maybe we cracked down on the gangs, thugs, dealers, bad elements, etc., (and we had parents who actually took an active role in disciplining their kids instead of rewarding them) we would not have tik tockers who think it is ok to kick in a door at 4 am, punch a teacher in the face, or steal things from the school and post them on social media, and then maybe, the kids wouldn't feel the need to bring a "weapon" to protect themselves when they are at school?

We pay taxes to police forces and school, city, county and country leaders can protect our law abiding citizens, if they are not going to do that, maybe we don't pay the taxes and we hire our own security? Maybe hire some of those retired LEOs as private security at the schools, were there is an issue. If I recall the NRA offered to do free school security evaluations at one point and our tax dollars (if not being squandered on pet projects) would probably be more than enough to ensure our schools are safe.

If our leaders are not going to protect us and our kids when they are at school then who is? Seems more and more the "kids" are figuring out it is up to the individual to protect themselves.

the 17-year-old was nabbed there allegedly with a 9mm pistol and more than $30,000 in cash

I'm looking at the article and the accompanying pictures and, no surprise.

We're not allowed (either socially or on this forum) to objectively and honestly discuss the real problem.

And because of the usual unilateral, arbitrary constraints (to discuss an issue without really discussing the issue), Sunny out.

How are they acquiring guns?

How does a 17 yr old acquire $30,000 in cash? From the linked article ....."the 17-year-old was nabbed there allegedly with a 9mm pistol and more than $30,000 in cash."

The ride to school on the subway, the bus, outside the buildings. Bullying is a major reason many kids bring weapons to school. Then there's the gangs. Some of those 21 students may have been gang members. None of those other 21 weapons were firearms. Only the brass knuckles would seem to me to be an offensive weapon.

As someone who changed schools at least 33 times on the way to gaining my Masters, I probably have an unusual opinion about schools and schooling - especially since my bachelor's degree was in Education.
The schools that I attended included inner-city public schools in Los Angeles and Portland, private schools all over the west coast, reservation schools, various trade schools, community colleges and the University of Alabama.
I've also taught at several schools throughout central Alabama.
The only firearms that I've seen in the actual buildings were in the hands of various authorities.
Pocket knives and such were common, but that was long ago when things were different... .

Even faculty aren't supposed to have anything with a blade; got a TSA approved Leatherman for our daughter.
I'm long retired, but a real knife with a real blade was always in my pocket; fellow faculty borrowed it. Tho' one did inquire "Do we know where that's been?"
We apparently can't control our schools (doofus rules notwithstanding) and we can't control our streets. Not a cheerful prospect for the future.

How are they acquiring guns? No Cabelas, Gander Outdoors, or any local gun shops.
Not any of those places for the gun in the picture. It's clearly a build on an 80% receiver.
Also did anyone else catch it that's a faux GLock i.e. ''ghost gun'' in the pic. I mean, why not put some anti-2A propaganda in there ITS FREE PUBLICITY:rofl:.
Given that is a picture of the gun that was confiscated, I don't think it's reasonable to call it propaganda. When a minor ends up with a gun, asking the question: "How did they get it?" is certainly pertinent. Look at what's going on with the MI school shooting. In this case, the answer to the question is pretty obvious.

The current philosophy is "restorative discipline". Which was practiced at both Stoneman Douglas and surprise surprise, Oxford High School, site of the recent horror show in Michigan:

Well, there you go is all I can say to that.

well there is more I can say, but I will choose not to.

When I went to an alternative school in 9th grade. No metal detectors. But every once in a while a drug dog would show up. And I knew who had something. They would be sweating. And they found a few weapons. And get this the teachers are allowed to put hands on a student! Popo Powell told and showed us the many things he took off students. Guns, drugs, knives, shanks, knuckles, pepper spray, metal pipes, bricks, and a lot more. Homeschool or private school if ya can!
