8.6 Blackout! WHAT!!!

In some sense not much, but a few minor things makes 8.6 BLK slightly better for subsonic use. Most 350 legends don't have the twist rate to stabilize 300 gr + bullets. 8.6 BLK was designed for 300 gr + bullets utilizing a very fast twist rate. 350 legend does not have enough room in front of the case mouth for long pointy low drag bullets. 8.6 BLK does.

If you already have a 338 suppressor for your 338 Lapua.
Knob Creek, I was next to a guy with 338 Lapua Suppressed.! The thing sounded so Bad A**. It sounded like a 90’s Turbo Civic’s Blow off valve

Shooting 338 Lapua with a brake vs suppressed is like shooting two different guns. You can shoot so much more suppressed without the fatigue, it really tames the beast. The reduction in muzzle blast seems more critical than the extra weight / recoil reduction.

Places like Knob Creek won’t be around in the future. You guys take it in as long as you can.

There's always my back 40:) See my avatar? That's a suppressed Barrett 338 LM!
NICE! mabey your the guy at Knob Creek! that is one caliber I must eventually have. I should have bought the Savage 338L when it was at a good price.Don’t Ruger make a .338L ?

Nice rifle, most of my time with 338 LM was behind a PSR and Titans QD. It was a fun rifle but could never afford to make one mine. I wouldn't want a 338 LM in a traditional bolt gun, to light, got to have the weight of a large chassis rifle and suppressor to make it tolerable.

is that a Semi auto barrett?

Nope, bolt gun. @mcb....yep, I've shot it in a lighter, more traditional stock (a savage maybe?) that was more traditional hunting oriented, and it was a little much. I think though, with an ASR brake combined with a SilencerCo Hybrid 46 w/ the brake end cap, it would be pleasant shooting enough. Would make a nice 600 yard elk gun anyway, and no worse to carry than my old Winchester 66 in 338 WinMag....but without the ball of suck that is loading for belted magnums. However, the Barrett is NOT a suitable hunting gun, at least for the kind of hunting I do. It's freakin' heavy. Which of course is part of the reason it has the felt recoil of a .243.

What can the 8.6 do that a 350 legend with 200 + grain bullets can’t do? Runs on a AR-15 lower. bullets both solid, jacked, and cast are established. Lots of loading data available. Subsonic means heavy bullets, the 350 delivers.
Disclosure, I have a 350 and am working up subsonic loads for function, accuracy, economy presently.
The challenge with subsonic is the same challenge black powder loads experienced 125 years ago, the only way to increase performance is to increase weight, then to increase bullet diameter, hence the.45-70 with 500 gr loads.

All valid, but I am convinced that the 8.6 isn't intended for the 15 platform. I think it's COL is off, it's got to be longer than 2.26 from the pics I've seen. In which case the arguments above aren't valid, because it doesn't bring anything to the table in the 15 platform. It does however, bring the first purpose designed sub round to the 10 platform. It's still of zero interest for me, but I can see a market interest.........there will be an entirely new crop of net ninjas now who "need" a subsonic AR10

Net Ninja! completely using that

must be the new Tactical Warrior weapon. Everyone want to be a suppressor operator. What happened to Normal Tactical, hidden in plain sight. I try to blend in as much as possible: long hair, Prius, and only 5:11 slim cut jeans!

New products, that would compound the current component shortages, in my mind that is just asinine. Somewhat like a car manufacturer designing new cars with advanced chips when they can't even get chips for existing production.

We truly are a silly people. Dilute and hope to shoot. I really don't want to come across as a naysayer but the lack of common sense in this country is scary. I don't want new products until I can find a ready supply of the traditional products.

Take what I say for what you think it's worth. I've gone back to iron sights, no new wonder scopes, and no strange calibers or rifles that basically do little to outshine one another.

Variety might be the spice of life but there is something to be said for salt and pepper in trying times.

I like Salt & Vinegar

It not like they haven't tested this. 1: 3 at 1050 fps is not that much faster (rev/sec) than than that same bullet fired a bit over 3000 fps from a 1: 10 twist 338 Lapua Mag.

True. But they will have supersonic which spins twice as fast.

"For supersonic, the lightest bullet is going to be between 150 and 160-grain. Out of a 12″ barrel, we’ll be able to get somewhere close to 2,400 feet a second with that."

2400 fps 1:3 twist = 576,000 rpm!

the physics of this is AMAZING, really want one!

Recent article on development and testing of 8.6 BO

The wanted a sub sonic 300gn sub sonic round that would be effective at 600 yard

you thought 1:3 barrel was insane. testing also included 1:2 barrel and a crazy 1:1 barrel.

INSANE and I LOVE IT

After reading everything here, I think someone could be equally suited with a .45 Raptor/Socom or even a .50 Beouwulf.
My thoughts;
The above are very effective as supersonic hunting rounds.
They could all be loaded with HEAVY 400gr+ slugs that are subsonic as is an 8.6Blackout.
Market availability and support already existing. I know that with ammo and components the way they are, new calibers shouldn't be a priority.

Just my thoughts, still I hope the guys who have them enjoy them and report back to us about them!
If you were already into .338 guns, it would make more sense if you ask me.

8.6 Blackout 1:3 twist - cast for subs are possible!!!

This is an exciting time, being at the beginning of something that challenges traditional wisdom. A very few folks have begun to work with cast in the 1:3 twist barrel. There is a very detailed work up on one of the 8.6 Facebook groups that shows the cast boolits holding together until 1115fps with a 24bhn alloy but the poster declined to share the alloy ingredients/percentages. The mold used was a 338 dia 270 grain NOE spire point with no lube grooves. I would like to also do some cast experiments but wanted to get a heavier, flat point mold to work with. NOE has already manufactured, but is currently out of stock, the HTC339-315-FN-BZ1 315gr flat point. There is currently a post on the NOE forums directed at getting NOE to make more of these. Apparently the mold was originally designed for the 338 Specter but will also work in all 338 cal applications.

If you are interested in a 338 mold, and this would work for you in your pursuits, could you please sign up on the NOE forums page?
