Shot Count Before Revolver Gets Gritty

my smith m29 binds after shooting several cylinders but not because of grittiness and then loosens up after cooling. it did that quite a bit after buying it used and had to go back to the factory. it does it much less now. the SRH, doesn't bind can't recall if it gets gritty. my trigger finger is the one that gets weak after about 125 rds DA shooting so i switch hands.

My GP100 and SP101 both bind up and gets gritty after about 100 rounds and I have to take it apart and clean the hole the cyl turns spins on.

The cylinder drag will increase the trigger pull enough I notice it and my accuracy decreases.

Don't think any of my Smiths have ever done that.
Never had a cylinder out of one of the Smiths.

My Rossi .22 revolver won’t bind up but chambers get tight when hot and dirty at about 100 rounds, it gets cleaned every range trip. Seems to be a .22lr thing as much as the gun.

My biggest concern with revolvers is the crane/yoke/cylinder becoming less easy to turn. This puts strain on the hand and other internal parts. Usually my cleaing consists of cleaning the back of the cylinder, the star if you will, the area around where the hand resides and the yoke assembly.

I'm a 150-250 a practice session and competitions run from 80 to 150 rounds IDPA and 100-200 USPSA and ICORE. (Different guns of course) For practice I usually carry a fan to help carry off the heat. Much less messy than a bucket of water.

Hm.

Those are high numbers.

Need to figure out what’s bugging mine, then...

Sounds more like an ammo issue than a gun issue.

I tried using 4227 to make some reduced 44mag loads and they were very dirty and made the action noticeably gritty. Lots of flakes getting caught in the action.

With ammo that burns even a little cleaner, I'll have no issue running over 100rds in a session. Even then, all I'll need to do is wipe the carbon off it, not really "clean" the gun. At most a quick brushing of the cylinder star.

The cylinder on my Interarms Rossi would bind with about 50 rounds through the pistol

turns out powder residue was getting around the "crane shield" and getting between the cylinder and the yoke.

To make it useable, had to remove cylinder from yoke and clean up the insides. I did send it to Interarms Customer service and the gunsmith said the cure was to open the forcing cone a bit. It did better afterwards, but it was not a cure. At some number or rounds, the cylinder sticks.

Your Ruger should not bind, and if it is new, Ruger customer service should be called.

Perhaps it's time for one and all to
revisit various posts here and elsewhere
on the internet about revolver
"gas rings."

Also for those with Rugers revisit
Ruger home videos about cleaning
the cylinder channel on its wheel
guns. Other sites also exist.

Shot my local Steel Challenge Match today with my S&W 617 and didn't have any problems inserting my speed loaders through the entire match.

That's 39 reloads. I was using Federal BYOB 40 grain coated bullets. I'm running out so I'm going to see if Norma Tac 22 and CCI Clean will take it's place.
