9mm Brass Sellers and Ballot cases magnetic

I was loading some 9mm for the weekend to go to the range. I have a loading bench in my garage and I use sometimes my magnetic dish I use for car parts to hold the brass as I size and prime it. I noticed when I dumped out the brass two cases stuck to the dish. They are marked S&B 9mm. They sizied OK but seem to be magnetic. Not sure if this is some kind of alloy that uses steel or is there steel in the case down inside or is it brass plated steel? Anyone know what this is?

I have come across copper color casings. They were magnetic too. Coated steel.

These are defiantly brass. I think they may be brass plated. They sized fine so I will shoot those two since they are primed now.

There has been magnetic steel being used in shotgun bases for awhile. First I have heard of it being used in smaller rounds. I just ran a magnet over a couple 9mms I have on hand. Rem GS and HST. Neither are magnetic. If this is a continuing trend it would make range pickup easier. Just run a magnet strip.

If you do a Google search you will find numerous mentions of S&B selling brass-plated steel case 9mm. Golden Bear ammo is also brass coated steel case

I use a large magnet to check all 9MM range brass. These are S&B brass coated steel

How very odd ,as I have over 2K S&B 9mm processed brass and not a single one is magnetic . I just ran a 40 lb. pull magnet through them .

I found one once trimming them down to convert to 9mm Makarov. It was really hard to trim and sure enough, brass plated steel with a boxer primer.

I bought a case of S&B 9mm 124 grain FMJ twenty or so years back. Brass plated steel. Shot fine.
Take a file to a case and you'll see.

S&B (Sellier & Bellot, not "Sellers and Ballot") in the past used to load handgun cartridges with steel cases for civilian sale, now they use only brass. So if you run across older S&B cases, do check them with a magnet.

I'm surprised they resized OK. Brass-plated steel is a bit higher-end than lacquered or plastic-coated steel. Some guns don't like the coated rounds much, while the plated ones generally work fine.

I've tried resizing aluminum cases, which seemed to work, but they were all Berdan, so I was never able to load working ammo to see if the bullets backed out in the cylinder when firing.

S&B has made both brass and brass plated steel cases in 9mm.

There are probably thousands that reload them and never know.

Before I built my sorting machine, I started putting a magnet on the clip that holds the feed tube on my presses. Easy way to passively find every steel case before it’s in the shell plate.

It stops the collator, then grab the magnet and lift it out of the funnel, replace the magnet and carry on.

They used to make 223/556 rounds with brass plated steel cases. Worked fine, I don't know anyone who tried to reload them.

I was at the range next to some guys blasting with a new AR and the brass kept landing by my feet. I thought that while it was annoying, at least I was getting a lot of free once fired brass once they left. Turns out it was all brass washed steel Baranaul, not something good like LC ot PMC or PPU.
