Off-Topic Narrative in Which Two Old Men Haggle without Haggling

The first time I saw it was at the LGS four or five months back. I hadn't been there in a while. It already looked sad and lonely. I already have the same pistol in polymer (PM40), and I like it, but it's very light. I have trouble shooting it with the flush mag, due to my XXL hands and overall poor shooting practices. When I saw the MK40 I thought, "That heavy steel thing would be pretty easy to shoot." I asked about it, but didn't say much. The tag said $795 (used), so that little pistol was going to sit there for a while. It's an expensive model, but it's not a popular model, if you get what I'm saying. It tried to give me the eye, but I looked away.

I saw it a few more times. I smiled at it and chatted with the owner in front of it. I never looked it directly in the eye or asked to hold it. That was the pro move, right there. Don't put your hand on them unless you really mean it.

Today I had a great morning, including a very pleasant range trip with a good friend. On the way home I drove a couple of streets out of my way to say hello at the LGS. I greeted the owner, an old friend, and asked after his family. He did likewise. Then I tested which way the wind was blowing. "How's business been?" I asked.

Well he hadn't sold jack today and was kind of glum about that. He was ringing up a couple of FFL fees that were going real slow. I approached the Kahr from the side. I could just see it from the corner of my eye. It winked at me.

When my friend happened to pass by I commented, "Wow, you still have that thing in here?" Then I pretended to be surprised by the price. "Holy cow, no wonder it's still here!" My acting skills were honed to a keen edge by 29 years of lying to young people in a classroom. :)

My friend hates to have things sitting around on his shelves and not moving. He really does not like that at all. He doesn't believe my BS acting "skills" any more than my students used to, but he knows that I will take a orphan off him if I like it and he just wants to get out from under the thing. Plus he had an ace up his sleeve. "Feel this thing," he told me, handing me the pistol.

Yeah. That was the pro move on his part. Let them handle the goods, especially if the goods are very nice. The trigger was silk. The pistol was nice and heavy, and it pointed well. Man that trigger was nice. My friend saw the look on my face. "Hang on. Let me make your day," he said. He looked up the tag on his PC, then he walked up. "Sit down and hold your heart," he told me. "$425, right now today."

I know by his face and voice when he's offering me a solid deal on a pistol no one else wants, so I just politely got my wallet out without haggling.

The Actual Pistol

It's small DAO steel-framed single-stack pistol in 40 S&W. Mine is a "fancy model" (Elite 03) with supposedly nicer finish, beveled mag well, and polished feed ramp. It seems to have been made in 2006.

It was shot a fair amount, but not a whole lot. The trigger and action are silk. I like the sights. Fit and finish are nice. It was well cared for. Came with one 5-round flush mag and two 6-round extended mags.

I used the lighter polymer model of the same pistol (PM40) for carry in the bib pocket of overalls or in a coat pocket a few times, before I decided against it. This steel version should be better for that - much easier to shoot with the flush mag. I already have a couple of pocket holsters for it.

Some people don't like the Kahr trigger; some people like it a lot. I like it a lot, maybe because I enjoy DA revolvers so much.

Do y'all have any Kahrs to show? This one could get lonely again. Have you really liked your Kahrs? Really disliked them? Is there any ammo they love or hate? Do you have a really cool holster for it? Did it save your life that one night in that house of ill repute in Paris? Pitch on in. :)

Caliber: .40 S&W
Capacity: 5+1, 6+1 (magazine with grip extension)
Operation: Trigger cocking DAO; lock breech; "Browning - type" recoil lug; passive striker block; no magazine disconnect
Barrel: 3.0", polygonal rifling; 1 - 16 right-hand twist
Length O/A: 5.35"
Height: 4.0"
Slide Width: .94"
Weight: Pistol 23.1 ounces, Magazine 1.9 ounces
Grips: Wraparound, textured hard nylon
Sights: Drift adjustable, white bar-dot combat sights
Finish: Matte stainless steel

Elite 2003
The polished stainless steel finish and laser etching on the frame are available on all Kahr Elite 2003 pistols - the K9, MK9, K40 and the MK40. The lustrous finish complements our innovative designs and solid construction. The magazine well is beveled for easier magazine reloading. The feed ramp on the barrel is polished to a high luster to insure reliable feeding with all types of ammo. Laser engraving on the frame provides the finishing touch to the polished stainless steel - for an appearance as impressive as its capabilities.

I ended up with a couple. Last year I picked up a used CM40. Local guy had it in his case for $400-something. Didn't sell didn't sell didn't sell. Eventually put it on Gunborker. I bid, picked it up for $232, with 2 magazines.

Then 3 or 4 months ago I picked up a used CM9 at a different place. I've been keeping an eye out for deals, last couple years. They had this one for $250, 2 magazines and a Tagua soft leather holster I don't care for. (I think folks've been ditching their small single stack automatics, what with the Sig 365 and competitors being so hot right now. )

I like the Kahr trigger just fine. Long and pretty smooth. I don't like the price of Kahr magazines.

I'm not sure I care for that size. The next size up would be a lot easier to use, I think.

The CM40 is pretty "barky". It seemed pretty well behaved with PMC 180gr ammo. The CM9 is more fun to shoot.

I noticed that the sizes of the CM9 and CM40 are very slightly different. The CM40 won't fit in kydex molded to fit the CM9.

The polymer version (PM40) is easy for me to shoot with the +1 magazines. With the flush magazine I only have two fingers on the grips and the recoil makes it twist more than I prefer.

I'm thinking the stainless steel MK40 will be much easier to shoot. It weighs 23 ounces instead of 14 and it's not nearly as top-heavy.

AA37180A-E4E1-414E-A17D-43B9A7CDE12A.jpeg The P9 set me back 300 flat. I waited and watched it too. Not as fancy as the all metal versions. But it certainly carries well. I would like to look for one of the more compact cm9 as well. I like the triggers too. They are just smooth. I got used to staging my Glock trigger. But these you can’t do that. Just a pull through.

I love my sa/da pistols. I don’t own a Glock anymore. But these two single stack pistols or my 442 are my go to carry guns. I need to get some spare mags. I can see why the new double stack compacts are the rage. But it’s easy to forget these are even on you. Even with my slide belly and tendency to appendix carry.

I had a CW40 some years back and really liked the feel and balance of the longer grip frame. I found that the heavier 180 gr load gave me less muzzle flip and felt recoil that some of the lighter, higher velocity ammo. But even after the 200 round break-in period I was still having feed problems with the gun. Decided to sell it at a gun show with full disclosure. Some guy with a table at the show bought it as he said he was interested in getting a Kahr for some time now.

Fast forward some 10 years later and I'm looking at a CM9 and a Beretta BU9 Nano. Price is fairly close and the Beretta is nice enough but I really love the ergos on the Kahr and it has a sweet DA feel to it with the trigger. Went with the CM9 and it's been great and an integral part of my EDC line-up.

You really shouldn’t have to upgrade a gun just to feel comfortable with it. Having said that. I have heard a lot of good things about the aluminum followers. lakeline Llc is the producer. They are twenty bucks a piece and seem to assist with reliable feeding and reduce the tendency to spit bullets. I think the plastic oem twist.

I think there are some people making the switch. I got this 45 for 260. I always loved the look of Kahr handguns. Haven’t shot this or it’s sibling yet either. Soon I aim to fix that. View attachment 1096995

Yep, with all the double stack sub-compacts 9mms on the market today many Kahr owners are trading up/over for added capacity.

But you can't get that trigger on any of the new SC wonder-nines.
Well, maybe a SCCY CPX-2 with a red dot for $220, trigger is 9# though
SCCY CPX-2 9mm Pistol with Black Frame/Stainless Slide and Red Dot | Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore (sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com)
Another gun that's close (trigger wise) is an HK P30SK V1 for $660+
HK P30SK Sub-Compact V1 Light LEM 9mm 3.27" 10+1,13+1 Black Steel Slide Black Interchangeable Backstrap Grip - Impact Guns
That gun has a paddle mag release though...
So yeh, a trigger "like" a Kahr but not quite.
Kahr hasn't introduced anything new in quite some time and seems to be more interested in Desert Eagle and Thompson today.

When I was looking at itty-bitty guns Kahr's were the best (and only) game.
I did buy a S&W Scandium 357 5 shot itty-bitty revolver of some sort because no one had any Kahrs at the time, and I needed something small for a cross country road trip.
I carried it with 38s and when I shot the 1st 357s I had loaded 5, shot 2, unloaded the rest, and traded it in on my Kahr(s).

I went back and forth between the PM9 and the CW9 and solved that dilemma by buying one of each.
I've carried both, in the same holster or fanny-pack (lived in Florida) and came to prefer the CW9 because it's easier to shoot for me.
I have both those guns I mentioned in post #11 plus more, but I leave the house more often with a Kahr than any other.

Edit: As for 40s, I've own 2 Glocks in 40 (23 and smaller?) and I found both punishing with factory ammo.
I sold the smaller Glock and got a 9mm drop in barrel for the other and shot speed steel with it.

part of that shift in focus is due to market ownership. Everybody and there cousin broke into the compact market wether it’s ruger with the LC9 or Glock with their entries. No one plays in deagle territory. I would focus on the bigger part of the Thompson line too as no one is in that either.

I used to have a K40 but traded it and got a K9. I love that gun. Smooth as silk shooter and perfectly reliable.

I would buy an MK9 if I ever saw one for the right price. $425 is the right price.

I do not like polymer pocket, micro style 9mm/40/45 guns at all. The extra weight of the all steel design makes them much, much easier for me to shoot accurately, especially follow up shots.

A little skate tape on the MK40’s front strap does wonders for control. But I never found the recoil excessive, regardless. It’s a solid little brick.

When I used to frequent the Kahr forum, the full sized steel framed 9mm were boringly reliable, and the further away you got from there, the less reliable they were, until you got to the compact polymer in 40 S&W, which would peen where the barrel locked into the slide.

I’ve always wanted one of the full sized steel Kahr, as the trigger on them was the best.

The polymer version is nothing special as far as fit/finish.

The steel one looks and feels like a fancier gun, like one of those nice little Sigs or something.

I cleaned it yesterday. It was mildly dirty. The top of the barrel shows modest wear. The rifling and rails look very good. It's tight all over.

Hoping for a range report next week.

Good find. The LGS was selling a used gun at a new gun price. FYI: Kahr no longer makes the Kahr K and MK in 40s&w.
