Why buy Lyman stuff?

I bought the 4500 Lubrisizer based on lowest price. The hole for inserting the top punch was not there. Sent them an email, they sent me a response, and the finished part. I always think of Lyman as quality products, glad to have choices.

I have Redding Competition dies and have had trouble with the seating dies being inconsistent. I fought with it for little while, then 9mmepiphany told me how to get it to work the way it was supposed to.
I later bought one of Lyman's professional dies and it's built like an Abram's tank, you set that thing your good for the rest of your life.
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1023636699?pid=610889 I have the taper crimp die, as soon as Midway put the Lyman seating die back on a better sale price, I'm getting it also.

The mic on the Redding keeps unscrewing from the base when I try to make an adjustment.
The body size is a lot bigger in girth than the Redding. The Lyman pro dies are all stainless steel.
Here they are side by side.
I much prefer the lyman and when Midway get's them back down between 50-60 bucks for the seater, I'll snag it also.

$61! good price, does it drop good numbers ?

How does it behave? What's the variance between drops? For the Lee, it's apparently about 0.1 grains.

I've only used mine with Trailboss, the donut shaped powder, so my experience is limited. But it was pretty much on the money from the start, and after about 10~15 throws it was dead on for me, maybe 0.1 variation (not +- 0.1, but 0.1 total), if even that much. And I weigh every charge, so I know if it throws off.

A bit finicky to set your charge, and a small hopper, but I would recommend it 100%.

Lyman is an old line company that supports the shooting industry. They sell pretty good stuff. Their stuff and their prices may or may not suit you. I do not have much Lyman stuff left in my reloading setup. I have more money to spend now and have drifted towards Redding and RCBS replacing a bunch of Lee stuff. I use online manuals and data. So I seen no reason to buy Lyman stuff or no reason not to buy Lyman stuff. I did order a Pachymar pad (a Lyman product) today. Mostly because that is what was on the gun and the hole spacing works.

No, Lyman doesn't seem to be of significantly better quality.

All the major brands - even Lee - tend to work ok. Some of them feel better have and have some better attention to detail, or use higher quality materials, but overall they all still work.

You'll never find me buying anything Lyman if RCBS or Hornaday are available for less money.

I have Lee,Lyman and RCBS products on my benches. Im happy with them all.

Beautiful set up. I progressed from a 310 tong tool to the same Orange Crush you have sometime in the 1980's. Great tool and still working. Nice that RCBS dies work in it when Lyman dies cannot be found. Both brands are are about the same price (or used to be anyway).

If I'm not mistaken, die threads are standardized.
