Made a short starter and capper today

I was feeling crafty so I made these today. The antler is from a buck I shot last year. The other parts are a length of 3/8" poplar dowel, a short length of 3/8" brass rod, and a .38 Special case with the end turned down. All parts are glued and pinned together with brass pins I cut from brass rod.

The capper was made from a piece of scrap leather. The top right hole is to tie it to my shooting bag. The row of holes all have slits going to the edge of the leather. It's sized for #11 caps.

Looks great. I might steal your idea if you don't mind as I have some pieces of antler laying around that need a use. The 38 case is a novel idea.

I have made mine with round wooden balls from Hobby Lobby and brass rod with a cup turned in the ball end for years. I like a larger ball than the store bought ones have. Although they have worked well they just don't look like something that you would have found most using in black power days. Your's appear much more authentic to me. Even with the 38 case.

I have done that. I've even made cleaning jags with wood balls and dowel. I don't think they used short starters back in the day.

I made mine with a golf ball and cut off pieces of Delrin ramrod.

I think the bp Gods roll their eyes at short starters anyway so why would they care if you used a golf ball?

When I make my short starters out of antler, I hollow out one end to use as a powder measure for the gun the starter is for. Just one less item to have hanging off my pouch.
