Anyone still carrying with older JHP Ammo?

I've never seen hst in the wild.

I used federal wadcutters in my 38.

Then critical defense. I have a few hundred Remington 125 grain +p jhp from Walmart. They seem to only expand from 3 inch or longer barrels.

From a snub they'll definitely go through a 2x4.

Mostly use Remington or Winchester 115 grain jhp in 9s.

Remington 230 grain jhp in 45.

Can't afford the fancy ammo to stack deep enough to really practice and train so poi is a given.

For awhile critical defense was all the 38 you could find and it'll shoot to the sights so that's nice.

I carry 165g Remington golden sabers 40S&W in a Smith 40 VE. When the shooting stops I’ll call it in on my rotary phone. How’s that for old time.

I'm pretty much still using older HP designs for my SD ammo. Not because I believe it's superior to the new stuff, or even that it's just as good as the new stuff. I'm sure the new stuff is better, I just don't think it's enough better to warrant shooting up my supply of SD ammo and getting all new. I'll eventually run out of what I have and when I do, I'll go with the newer better stuff at that point.

I've never found any conclusive evidence that terminal effect due to caliber differences (within a general performance class) makes a practical difference in gunfight outcomes. How much less likely would it be to have a difference due to bullet performance in a single caliber make a practical difference in a gunfight outcome? It's not something I worry about.

NOW, that said, the stuff I have is old, but it's good. It's reliable and accurate, it shoots well in my guns and it performs well in terms of expansion and penetration. It's not garbage, it's just not the latest and greatest. I wouldn't carry ammo that's known to over-expand/fragment and therefore penetrate very shallowly, or go with a loading known to have anemic expansion just because I had a lot of it on hand.

I have a case of Federal 9BP LE +P+.
It performs well in my carry gun, Glock 19, 5th Generation and is very accurate.

I have to confess I still carry with Older JHP ammo designs, despite all the "new hot" ammo available. And this is going on 20+ years. Why?
These were the "Hot" ammo options to carry at the time. I know they will still do the job today.
Why? Because they go bang every single time, and have been 100% reliable. I've never had a malfunction with these service ammos, and I have no reason to make a change. Bottom line, I trust my life to them. Keyword: Trust.
Trust cannot be purchased from a store, but rather gained over time through repetitive usage.
Gel nerd nay sayers-- whatever man!

Even when better ammo designs surfaced over a decade ago, these older designs could still be purchased for at least a dime or 20 or 30 to 40 cents less per round than the new hot stuff. All of the below pictured ammo were purchased in lots of 1000 for less than 30 cents per round. I've fired several thousand of these in practice over the years, and because of the low cost, I have a lot more repetitions in with the carry ammo I plan on using. I still have several thousand of these still in stock and I plan on running them until the current "new hot stuff" becomes old news and prices come down on those. That could be another 10 years.....
I have purchased some new stuff, and they did fire just fine.....but at 1.00$/rd I'd rather stick to what I got until further notice. A Jacket separation through an intermediate barrier I can say I'm not worried about whatsoever.

I have a few boxes of Golden Sabers 185gr+P 45ACP and a couple 50rd boxes of old school 230gr Gold Dots that look older than I am lol! I was born in 1996 fyi. Also, is it wierd that I'm a millennial and LOVE 45 ACP? I don't like 9mm really at all...

Being limited to what was in the 1990 ammo catalogs wouldn't bother me one bit. In reality, I would get along just fine with the 1950 catalog.
I tend not to be very concerned with what ammo I'm carrying other than I've tested it and it goes bang reliably. I have a revolver that has some fancy hollow points in it, but for the most part for a semi-auto, I carry ball training ammo. It is what I practice with and it is reliable and I guess for me that is good enough. I'm not really wealthy enough IMHO to shoot enough expensive boutique hollow point ammunition to really test it enough to consider it reliable. Generally speaking I'm 1,000% more concerned with reliability and being able to hit what I'm aiming at that I am how the bullet performs. I get that bullet performance matters, but - the bullet hitting what you want to hit trumps all else to me.

I kept my xd45 loaded with those 185gr +p Golden Sabers. IIRC they tested really well and we're definitely spicy loads. I went back to 9mm for HD because they were a lot of flash and bang and not a good choice for a shared HD pistol.

I am still using the Speer 200gr jhp "flying ashtrays" in my 45s because I bought a lot of them back in the day. They've always fed and functioned well for me and they had a good track record when they were still being produced so I see no need to change them.

My 9mm journey started many years after I started with 45s. The Lucky Gunner tests persuaded me to go with the standard pressure Federal HSTs so in that regard I suppose I'm modern.

Black Talons baby!
I've still got a half a box of 9mm Black Talons I got at a yard sale years ago.
Really more for the collectability, only shot a few rounds of it.
Personally, ammo age doesn't bother me but don't buy a box of any SD round and not practice with it. If you're doing 99.9% of your range practice with 115 gr. fmj Blazer Brass don't expect to shoot the same with Hornady CD.

We are all overthinking this, just as we are with “the best cleaning/lubricating solutions”.
I grew up in former Yugoslavia ( which had surprisingly liberal gun laws), and I had great interest in firearms. I even had a concealed carry license for Zastava M-83 revolver (357 magnum). I moved to the USA as a young adult.
But what I was going to say is that in Yugoslavia back then, the only ammo allowed for both civilian and police use was FMJ (hollow points were colloquially referred as “dum-dum bullets” and were forbidden). And yet, according to newspaper articles, a “decent” number of people were killed each year from handguns using just FMJ’s
