as the title says, anyone have recomendations? i'm trying to keep this on a budget, but i'd like to hear what you other guys who have em think. any links to your fave would be great too. thanks

Hard to beat a KOBRA. I've got one on mine, and it works great. Really reasonably priced too.

edited to add: It's Russian made, so it slides right on the side mount on a SAR-1 no muss, no fuss.

Red-dot are pretty much the same quality at the same price-point. For example, $40-60 are about the same, $90-$120 are about the same.
$300-$400 are about the same price class. Choosing one depending on your budget.

IMHO, the important part is the mount. A lot of folks use Ulitmax mount. I don't have one for the SAR-1, but I do have one for my M1-Carbine. It works. The mount will cost you $100+

Good luck,
-Pat

I'll second the Ultimak mount, its the only way to go. It gets the sight up front, out of the way of both your field of vision and for cleaning. I have one on two AK's, one with a 30mm Bushnell dot sight, the other with a 1" Tasco. With the right dot sight mounted forward using the lowest rings you can find, or one of the BSA types with the mount attached, you can co witness your iron sights with the dot.(my 30mm even with the lowest rings wont let me use the irons for anything under 300M) The rifle shoulders naturally and quickly and the dot makes snap shots a breeze, even at longer ranges. The Tasco cost me around $70, the Bushnell around $100. I had a cheapie $25 BSA dot on my SAR for awhile and it worked fine too. Its actually been on and off a number of different guns and I've never had any trouble with it. If your not sure if you like the dot sights or not, its a chaep way to find out. The Ultimak however, isnt and as was mentioned, runs around $80-100 depending where you find them.

The Belarussian PK-01V red dot sight is great. It's built like a tank and bright enough for use in strong sunlight. It comes with the siderail mount that slides right onto the rail on the left side of the SAR's reciever. Here's mine, on my Saiga:

I was a Kobra fan for many years until I tried the PK-AS: Can be used with left or right eye, doesn't need batteries during the day, very rugged, sits low and left so irons are instantly available as backup, receiver cover can be removed for cleaning/maintenance w/o removing the PK-AS.

I use an UltiMAK with a Target Sports (NCstar) DTB130 red dot on it. The dot was $30 and works great. No parallax, believe it or not, and has held zero perfectly.

The knob came off, but it was easily fixed with some loctite on the screws.
