with 500,000 volts of power. I have a 100,000 volt one too and tried it on myself and what it does is contracts your muscles and kinds makes them tired and in a way paralyzed.

If you are going to get one get a panther, they are the best quality.

I dont know why but they dont have any more 500,000 volt ones.

Anyways they are completely non lethal.

I had a 100,000 volt stun-gun one time. Most worthless, pathetic piece of "defensive" equipment I've ever seen.

At best you'd be lucky to surprise an attacker. It wasn't painful and hardly uncomfortable (the muscle group it was applied to twitched a bit, but that was it).

I've never tried the 500,000 volt guns.

The consensus on those seems to be that the current travels only between the probes, not beyond them. I still remember hearing the stories of Cougar from Bladeforums walking around in circles with one of Mike's stun guns from W.O.W. held to his gut, holding a conversation. He did admit it hurt, but clearly he wasn't incapacitated, and he wasn't even "fighting mad."

Ya knew it wasn't staged because Mike lost a bet on it, as I recall, since the stun gun was one of his products at the time. ;)

I wouldnt ever defend myself with it, but it is scary... Also rememebr the 500,000v one is 5x the power of the 100,000v. It makes a SNAP when it goes off. I only bought it as a tool to intimidate

Looking at these 500,000 volt "stun batons" I'm surprised nobody has built one into an umbrella. Or maybe they have and I've never seen it.

The problem with tools bought for intimidation is that intimidation has a way of turning into self-defense.

Why not just admit that you bought it because it's way cooler than any of my toys? That I could get behind. :D

First, they are not completely non-lethal. They are very unlikely to cause death or serious injury, which is to say they are Less Lethal.

Second, the important question is, how many watts?

I read a story about a Doctor who kept one around for spider and snake bites. Evidently, by placing a probe in the bite holes and discharging it the venom is neutralized. Made sense to me, especially if the drive is a long one.

The Jurassic park fence must have had high amperage.
Voltage is transfer power. It is the pressure behind the shock. Voltage does not kill. Amperage kills. This has very very low amperage. 0.02 amps or something like that. Amperage is what really messes your body up and can stop a humans heart. It is the amount of "charge/energy" behind the shock. Watts are both compined in some sort of equation. I think you multiply the two.

One time I brought my Zapper into the ofice and someone wanted to see the spark. I held it up to a doorknob and triggered it and the device obliged with a nice display of current going to the knob and back to the device. Someone else wanted to see it and this time the angle was a bit different and I had the current run up my arm! What a feeling of helplessness that was, with my forearm all weak and numb!

Anybody know where they get those voltage figures from (500,000 volts)?

The voltage will build up until the air in the gap between the electrodes breaks down. This is about 25,000 volts per inch. So with a 1" gap, the voltage would never exceed 25,000 V.

Also the circuit will be severely loaded down when in contact with human flesh, reducing the voltage even further.

To generate 500,000 volts, the electrode gap (and output device itself) would have to be 20".

It generally requires a "Frankenstein" machine (like a tesla coil) and several amps of house current to perform such a feat.

Yeah, those 100kV tasers don't work too well. Some friends and I bought some at a gun show to use on each other for ????s and giggles--it doesn't really hurt. In fact I wouldn't use one on an attacker for fear of making them even more angry (thats all that happened when I would get stunned while caught unawares by my friends). Still fun though for ????s and giggles.

Keep in mind that there is a difference between a stungun and a Taser. Yes, stunguns are pretty much useless (I have a Nova 80kV model), but the Taser does have a place in the LEOs "less lethal" arsenal.

Check out the videos of the airtaser in action, and you'll see how fast the people drop.

RJ, I have no idea how the ratings are measured but it is possible to generate a 500 KV internal voltage, say across a potted capacitor, and then switch-connect it to the electrodes. You would have an instantaneous voltage of 500 KV between them. But I agree that voltage is nutty anyway.

That's true, insulation would change things.

It's shocking how bad advertising hyperbole has become.
