Hey guys/ gals, 1st post here, some may recognize my title from sigforum and packing.org, but now for the question. A while ago, my parents bought a Mossberg from a gunshow. This Mossy had the following features from the factory: 7rd tube mag, factory pistol grip, parkerized finish, 20" barrel, and heat shield. The gun itself says Mossberg 500, but he called it a 590 when he sold it to them. He did say the gun was kind of rare, and I couldn't find it on Mossberg's site. Just wanted to know exactly what we got.

If you could post a pic it would be much easier to identify..........but the only diff. between the 500 and the 590 is that the 590 will have a long trigger pull cuz it is double action. Hope that helps. :)

BTW welcome to the Highroad!!!!! :D :D

The 590 can have a double action trigger but most 590s do not. The 590 will have a metal trigger guard and metal safety. Some but not all 590s have a heavy barrel. All 590s have a large screw on magazine tube cap that screws over the magazine tube.

Below is a photo of a 590 magazine tube with the end cap removed. Note also that this particular 590 has a heavy barrel.

For the Model 590 on the Mossberg site, look under law inforcement models.

Also with a 20 inch barrel and a full magazine tube, the 590 will have an 9 shot (8 in tube, one in chamber capacity) and the 500 will have an 8 shot (7 in tube one in chamber capacity).

Also the 590 that is double action can not use a pistol grip (at least I have never found one that will fit).

sounds to me like it's a 500. 590's have the 8 shot mag tube. also the gun is stamped 500.

not all the 590 have the metal trigger guard and safety, just the A1's.

590's will be marked "590".

Very few 590s are DA, I've ever only seen ONE (at a shotgun match I shot) outside a gunshop. And even IN a gunshop, only ever seen one more. Out of hundreds of 500s and 590s.

On my 590, the model number ahead of the ejection port says 590, but stamped on the side of the receiver is 590A1. Mine is 20 inch heavy barrel, 8 shot magazine, ghost rings, park finish, metal trigger guard, and speedfeed stock.
