Mossberg 590 help!

Oh man! I'm glad about that!

I was really wanting to do that, but felt dreadfully saddened when I read it couldn't be done. Glad it can, I'm going to call Mossberg on Tuesday and see if they'll send me the proper heat shield.

Then, if they can do that, I'll be buying an M590A1 with 20" barrel and bead sights. Then I'll put on the heatshield, add an M4 or M16 sling, and am M9 bayonet and make my own modern day "trench gun"! :D

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help!
Hey, I'm nothing if not helpful! :D
(sorry about the confusion)

At least the info about the heat shield I gave you is correct, and the tip about the quickest way to determine if they sent you the correct one.

Hope you have better luck with them than I did - they kept telling me "that's the right shield" (she was apparently looking at the part # on the invoice).

I had to tell her it's the right number, but you sent me the wrong shield (twice).

When you order, you better triple verify they're sending you the 590A1 shield.
Then cross your fingers...

The heavy barrel on the 590A1 makes the gun too heavy and is unnecessary. I've never heard of a shotgun barrel wearing out. I believe the reason the military requested it was in case a sailor ran through a bulkhead on a ship and banged the barrel on the side of the doorway.

Yeah I've heard that to. I'm not too worried about it, I'm in the creek and woods a lot and can see the gun getting beat around. I'll gladly take the increased mil spec durability and the parker iced finish, I've read account of guys with 590A1s with added heat shields and they don't think it's too heavy, but is extremely durable.

Personally, I like the extra weight from the heavy barrel on the 590A1. I shoot lots of slugs and 00 buck for practice and it seems to help soak up the recoil a little. I generally enjoy recoil, but I usually shoot my Mosin last and I'd rather not have my shoulder too banged up from the shotgun.

Makes sense. I like my Ruger GP100 with 6" barrel, it really tames the recoil of magnums.

Seems like the M590A1's heavy barrel has a similar effect.

Last I heard, the U.S. Army is using short-barreled Mossberg 500s, not 590s. Apparently, the additional weight and strength of the 590 model wasn't really necessary.

The 590 is a GREAT shotgun and it's the next on my bucket list, but the 500 is every bit as good.

The army has been using short 500 for many years. I believe the M590A1 is geared more towards the navy and marines.
