I'm looking at getting one and the description says "The inside of the frame is marked M971 and M713." What does that mean? Also, the website says it's double action, does this mean it can also be fired in single action? Is there a way to tell if it was made before or after Taurus acquired Rossi? It has a non-fluted cylinder if that's any indication. Lastly, what's the difference between a 971 and 972? Thanks.

M971

M971 is Rossi's 6 shot .357 model.
The M972 would be the same, but a Stainless version. The strange thing is that Rossi also made the 971 in Stainless as well, so I'm not sure of any other changes. Some of the M971's came with poting and some did not.
I've seen them with & with-out fluted cylinders, so I'm not sure if you can set up a time line based on that or not .
My wife has a M971 in 4 inch and loves it. I shot it a few times and it shot pretty darn good.
They are NOT a lot of money although I have seen some gunshow prices up there as of late. Don't know why ?
Your M971 should shoot SA & DA.

Have no idea about the M713. Rossi didn't make a model with that number to my limited knowledge.

I agree with all of the above.......the 971's were made before Taurus acquired Rossi. They are shooters......Ive had a couple but not the 971/2. Always loved the way the feel and look.....
Its a trad. d/a gun...pull the trigger and it goes bang or you can cock the hammer and shoot s/a also.
Shoot well.

got one in SS snubby. a good little gun. would buy another if i come across it at a decent price. gunshow models may be considered collectible. dunno
