How many of you will admit to buying ammo when you don't have a gun it fits?

I bought a couple of cases of Syrian 7.5x54mm MAS back when Century Arms had it at really cheap prices because no rifles were available for it then...

That turned out pretty well when I later was able to pick up rifles that fired it...

I also bought several Astra A-100 "pre-ban" 17rd factory mags at a Longs Drugs Store when they were closing out their pistol stuff several years ago. I then had to buy the Astra A-100 to go with them, of course...

I just bought a case of Wolf 5.45x39mm HP in anticipation of use in a Bulgarian AK-74 kit that I'm planning to build soon...

So, the answer to the original question is, YES.

I don't recall ever buying ammo for a gun I don't have, however , I have owned LOTS of guns that I never had ANY ammo for. ( I don't shoot much) :scrutiny:

I have a box of .308, just so I could make a pic of some popular .30 rounds...

And some day, I might own something that shoots .308, or go shoot with someone else that does.

I've had 308 around since long before I had a rifle to shoot it. Still have some 20ga and don't have a shotgun to use it with.

I buy dies for guns I don't have;.460 Wby, 45-70, .35 Whelen, there should be others I can't evn remember right now.

I dont think I ever have. However, I have went out and purchased a pistol (a G17) for ammo I found in my closet, left over from where I owned a P95DC.

//edit: Now that I think about it, I did have some .223 befre the ban died. Along with an AR15 upper, a stock, and lotsa mags too. Everything but the lower, which I had days ofter the ban died.

I was once offered a GI Footlocker full of .30-'06 on clips. Turned it down since I didn't own a Garand, or a rifle in .30-'06. After I bought my CMP Garand, I went back to see if the offer still stood. It all burned up in the shed fire where it was stored.

I don't buy ammo for guns I don't have, not yet anyway, but I do get magazines. I have a couple M-16 mags, three or four M-14 mags and and a handful of 7.62 AK mags. Of course, my AK's in 5.45.

I once bought 10 boxes of WWB in .308 for some guns that I didn't yet have. It was at a K-Mart in NJ (when they actually sold guns & ammo), and had been marked down to $1.97 from $10.97 in several steps. I cleaned them out, and would've bought more if they had it.

I later bought a Remington 700 in .308. The brass from those 10 boxes is now all fire-formed for use in it (after neck-sizing, of course). Thus, I got some good Winchester brass for about $0.10/case, plus got to sight in and establish a baseline of accuracy for the rifle.

I found some Federal Hydrashoks in .38+p (50rd boxes) for $6/box. I bought 2 boxes just because of the price and should have just bought a case of it. I gave it to my dad because he's got a .357 and my mom has a .38, so at least it'll get used.

I do collect brass for calibers that I don't have dies for, knowing that someday...

"Well, gee, honey, I have this box of ammo in the safe, I better get a gun to go with it, don't you think?"

Dan

I do it all the time. If I find a good deal, Whether I have a gun in the caliber or not, I'll pick it up if I can afford it. I'll probably get to shoot it out of a friend's gun if I don't buy one in that caliber. ;) Conversely, I have a couple guns I don't have ammo for yet. Common calibers, even.

I still have some AWB era AK47 magazines that I never got around to buying the rifle for. I'm sure that one day I will put them to good use. Sometimes you have to jump on a deal when it presents itself even if it isnt likely to fully pay off untill later.

I also ordered a bunch of shotshells in anticipation of a shotgun that I had yet to purchase at the time. Turns out that they both arrived within hours of each other. I thought that was neat. And it showed an amount of preparation and foresight that is a bit rare for me. :uhoh:

Oh yeah, I also savemy brass despite the fact that I don't reload. The amount of .38 special brass in my possession is starting to get silly. But, the idea of getting rid of something that may prove usefull down the line just goes against my grain. I ALMOST started saving .22lr brass just because I read about how you can turn it into jackets for swaged .223 bullets. That was a little TOO obsessive compulsive even for me though.

I bought 600 rds of 5.56 last month at a local gun showfor my "evil black rifle". Rifle hasn't arrived yet from RRA. Also have 8 30rd mags and an EOTech 512. Rifle hasn't arrived yet from RRA.

Did I mention that THE RIFLE HASN'T ARRIVED YET FROM RRA???

I bought .22 and 12 gauge before I owned either. But I knew I'd be getting them eventually, so as Standing Wolf says, it's "planning ahead". ;)

Got my start in the "gun business" that way. Came across 4K of 41 Rimfire and 2K of 7.65 Arg sporting ammo that I just knew someone wanted. It all went downhill from there.

Guilty

I bought over 2000 rounds of 5.56 and 14 - 30 round magazines before completing my first AR!

Doesn't really count, but I have lots of .308 and .45 ACP for when I shoot wih my Dad- he has equipment for that stuff, but I briing it home again for next time. :)

Since I collect cartridges, particularly old British big game stuff, I have a lot of ammo for which I will never have a gun . . . .600 Nitro Express anyone?

Also have ammo for guns I have (stupidly) sold :banghead:, like .458 Win. Mag. I don't plan to make that mistake again.

Lately I've been buying .50 BMG with the plan to get a Bluegrass Armory Viper.

Ummm...Yes?

I have three boxes of .40 S&W that i bought about 4 years ago. Someday(hopefully soon) it will find it's way into USP mags, then into a nice sillohette target. I will save my money and buy that gun, I will save my money and buy that gun.

I bought some 10 boxes of .270 winchester for 5 bucks a box at kmart clearance sale thinking i was going to buy a Savage .270 they were clearancing at walmart...Did'nt happen....Anybody need .270 Remington Green Box 130 Core-lokt and 150 grain as well?

Yes, I too am a memebr of this group.

I have 30-06, 308 Win, 30/30, 7.62x39, .44 special and 9mm ammunition, but no firearm chambered for them. But I do have family and freinds that do have the firearms for my ammunition.

I have 200 rounds of WWB .40 and I don't own a .40. It was a good deal :).

A buddy of mine bought 12 boxes of factory .308 Norma Magnum ammunition at a garage sale for 35 bucks :). About a year later he had a Remington 700 based rifle built for it, and he has never looked back.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr
