As many of you know already I'm a new shooter on a bit of an acquisition spree to see what I like. Started with a revolver and a Glock and my performance with these is "godawful" and "fair to poor" respectively. Added this 1911 - SW1911PD in Commander size for those who haven't seen one before just this week and even though it's early days yet I see a significant improvement - heck may even be decent! The performance below may not be great to many of you - I have no illusions of being a competitive shooter or bullseye maven for quite some time - but to me after a total of 5 range sessions it is a whole new level and unless I suddenly got a lot better it's down to the weapon.

This thing is very repeatable. If I get the same sight picture it hits the same hole. I suspect the very crisp SA trigger is preventing me from screwing up the shot like I often do with my oither guns.

These are 4" targets at 25' or so. BTW ironically - and believe it or not - the much poorer performance on the target under the grip was when I tried to use the laser sights. They need a slight adjustment and I forgot to take the little Allen wrneches to the range with me. The good - again good as in good for me that is - groups on the other targets were just using the Novak sights.

Congratulations!

I don't know whether I told you in our latest email exchange, but I recently picked up my first 1911. Incredible how easy it is to shoot accurately with these, isn't it?

Well, D, glad you found one you like and shoot well. Yes, a 1911 is the way to go for combat accuracy. I certainly enjoy mine.

Well Fran you beat me on photograpjhy as usual - and on aesthetics of the gun too - quite a handsome piece there. I deliberately took my pic from the other side so the "idiot scratch" from reassembling the slid stop wouldn't show - I see you managed to avoid that yourself.

Thanks guys - I'm still feeling my way as a shooter with everything but in my limited experience I'm best with this one (decent), then the Steyr S9 (not bad), then the Glock (fair to middling), then my lamentable accuracy or lack thereof with the 686 (godawful).

I really think the correlation is in the length of the trigger pull - I am clearly not maintaining good control as I squeeze the trigger and will continue to work on that. That's the good thing about the 1911 - short light trigger pull gives me less time to screw up!

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

Oh, I fooled ya, thanks to Photoshop Elements. See, truth be told, there is an idiot mark on my patriot. It's just that I bought it used and the prior owner put that mark there. So, my photo is a phony!

I, too am a 1911 guy. I had a Glock and thought the world of it, then my girlfriend (now wife) bought me a Kimber and I got rid of the Glock to buy another 1911.

BTW, those groups are nothing to be ashamed of, very good shooting, especially for only 5 trips to the range so far. :what:

Finding the 1911 platform works for you is a lot like discovering the perfect recipe for home-made brownies (I prefer using Ghiradelli's recipe, with the addition of two tablespoons of sour cream, and three teaspoons of pure maple syrup - and always use turbinado sugar!).

The first one, with a fresh-brewed cup of good, strong coffee is heavenly - but two are best!

Problem is, you find you can't leave them alone. . .

We do a complete detail strip and clean of our modest collection of Colts, Kimbers, and a most-loved old Springfield after a day at the range. The lavished attention sees Susan and I keeping track of sear and disconnector wear, frame and slide fit & dimensions, barrel bushings and so on!

The end result is the consummate satisfaction when each pistol is completely reassembled and dry-fired with snap caps. When the testing is done and we load them again with fresh ammunition and put the selected two back in service as primary carry firearms, we aways exchange a quiet now and smile.

For us, after many years and literally hundreds of thousands of rounds down-range, nothing comes close.

And I usually bake a pan of brownies when the cleaning supplies are put away and the other pistols are back in the safes.

Fresh coffee, too.

I've been known to show sincere appreciation of quality brownies and good coffee...

:)

My uncle let me shoot his 1911 when I was, oh, maybeso eleven years old. Ah, it seems like only yesterday! :D But it wasn't...

I've meddled around with P38s, Lugers, Berettas, Glocks and I don't know what-all, but old Slabsides still fits my hand better than anything else.
