Well,

I'm in Wal Mart picking up a few things and go by the sporting goods department to check out stuff and see if anything has changed, unlikely I know. I see three, 20 count boxes of Federal Hydra Shok's marked at $9.00 each so, I ask the guy behind the counter to get them for me. I have never seen Hydra Shok's at Wal Mart before and that's a real good price around here for them.

Well starts to tell me about his brothers new Bushmaster, the conversation went something like this:

Him: My brother just got a new Bushmaster.

Me: Great, hope he likes it.

Him: Yea, he does. He got this scope for it that has a red dot. You just look through it and where the dot is, is where the bullet goes.

Me: Nice, they're call red dot scopes.

Him: No, this one is different and special.

Me: How so?

Him: Well this one is just point it, look through it and your ready to shoot.

Me: Wow, that's special.

Him: Yea, it's a military scope.

Me: People also use them for hunting.

Him: No not this one, you can't even buy it on the Internet.

Me: No kidding? Ask your brother if it is an AimPoint.

Him: No it's not that, it has a special mount that allows you to see the sights if the battery is dead. It's kind of longish (holding his hands about 6-10 inches apart) and the ends are round, maybe rectangular like.

Me: Trying not to laugh as not to embarrass him, I simply said, "Well, tell him good luck, thanks, have a good night."

If it wasn't for their prices and convenience........

But I guess that's one reason the prices are low. At least he likes messing with guns.

I think he just wanted to impress and couldn't deliver. Oh well, worth a little headache for those three boxes though I bet. Next time, return with your own sit-n-bull story.

Yeah, I'll bet he thought you didn't know anything and tried to impress you. When he finds out that you actually know something, he just kinda :(

Marshall - be thankful the guy was even remotely interested in guns - even if lacking in the sights knowledge department.

I did have one supreme visit about three years ago when the guy working sporting goods was a shooter and - wait for it - KNEW his calibers and much more besides. It was a dream come true.

Never happened since tho - I reckon he went on to better things in a ''real'' gun shop - or better. :)

Ya, at least he didn't give you a dirty look for wanting ammo. I run into this all the time, since I am into cars. "My buddy has a twin turbo system on buttons man..." Ya? That's great! Next!

The young guy at the sporting goods counter at my local Wal-Mart always tells me about his illegal G17 modded to shoot full auto. I just seem intrested long enough to make my purchase while I think to myself: This guy doesn't know me, I could be a cop or ATF agent for all he knew.

I'm not rough on the guy, cause he seems more informed about shooting, (always picks up what you ask for) and never bats an eye when I go and buy 10 boxes of 9mm WWB.

Some people just want to be liked, they'll talk about anything they think you would be interested in (even if they have to make it up). I work at a wal-mart and know 10 times more about firearms and ammo than anyone in the store (except maybe the ocasional military or law enforcement customer who is buying groceries). Think they would put me in sporting goods? Nope, have to be 21 to sell rifles according to Wal-Mart and i'm only 18. I can buy them but not sell them? My judgment is good enough to not load up my new rifle and start blasting at passing cars in the highway from the Wal-Mart parking lot but my judgement is not good enough to decide who should and shouldn't be sold a rifle? I gave up on Wal-Mart a long time ago...

Hey, for three boxes of Hydroshocks at 9 bucks apiece I can listen to a story like that. Have listened to stories just as bad while paying full price. Always be polite and act amazed. :D

careful!!

"different and special"
"military scope"
"not used for hunting"
"Well this one is just point it, look through it and your ready to shoot." and easy to use!!

if we get a critical mass of brainiacs like this one, they'll be LEO soon

i can see the ads now:

HCI/VPI: "There's no need for citizens to have red dots. Only non-violent colors like fucia or purple should be allowed"

NRA: "Red dot scopes don't kill people, guns do!"

A Wal-Mart near me has an older guy who always has a story for me when I buy WWB ammo. Just smile and play along. He always treats me well, doesn't ask stupid questions, and will let me browse for other ammo while we talk. Even let me fondle a gun here and there, "although it is against company policy for me to let you touch on of the display guns."

Wow! Wonder if I have to join the armed forces to get one of those "special" scopes? :D
Sounds like the guy was just wanting to impress someone, anyone. Especially since all his buddies have figured out that he is full of it. :neener:
Still going to try to find one of those scopes though....... :scrutiny:

I should be glad that the only trouble I have at Walmart is getting the guy behind the ammo counter to find the ammo I want on the shelf...

Me: Gimmie' a couple boxes of Winchester USA 9mm 147gr. JHP...

Clerk: These?

Me: No, second shelf all the way at the end to the left...

Clerk: This one?

Me: No, all the way to the end...

Clerk: Is this it?

Me: You're getting warmer...all the way to the end of the shelf.

Clerk: These?

Me: Tell him what he's won, Gene...

Clerk: What?

Me: Nothing...Those are the ones I want.

Clerk: How many you want?

Me: Two boxes... *sigh*

I guess I should count myself lucky, the guy that works the sporting goods counter at my Walmart is also a shooter, doesnt try to bs me, and just gives me what I want.

...I guess that makes him a straight shooter! :D

Maybe he didn't try to BS you. He may be repeating what his brother said trying to impress HIM.

All I know is it impressed the hell out of me...and I'm only reading it online :D

Hard to find that price around here in the gun stores. Cali WalMarts don't sell firearms or obscure caliber ammo, (Not even 7.65 ARG or 7.62x54R,) so that business goes to the gun stores. Likewise for accy's, (Safes, cleaning stuff, parts, etc.)

But $20 for 100 rounds of my primary pistol ammo is too good to pass up.

If I worked at a gun store and got a good emp discount, I doubt I would ever go to wally world.

Kinda like my last experience at Academy Sports. I asked the guy if they carried any .45 Colt. All I got was a blank stare. Then I asked if they had .45acp in anything but 230-grain. Another blank stare.

And you didn't ask him where we can get one of those great scopes????? :D

The ladies behind the counter at my local Wal Mart are very nice. I just point which box I want and they're very nice and professional about it.
