I recently started shooting my 686, and fell in love with the wheelgun. Ammo cost has me looking for a 9mm variant of this revolver. Does anyone know if Ruger, or S&W are or will be making a full size 9mm wheelgun?

If not where is the best place to purchase some inexpensive 38 or 357? Reloading is not an option for me.

Thanks for the reply, but I am looking for something I can use on duty. I would like a 4 inch barrel, I cant imagine there not being a market for a revolver like this. If nothing else IDPA folks could take advantage of it.

The only things even remotely resembling full-size service guns were some Ruger Security Sixes made for Israel in the 1970s, a couple of runs of 3 and 4" barreled S&Ws, the 547, in the same time frame, and a few S&W Model 19s in the early 1970s that served as the test beds for the 547s.

The 547s used a funky ejector mechanism which prevents the use of moon clips.

Your best bet is to look for a 547, as they are by far the most common.

Others may have been made, but these are the ones with which I'm familiar.

Ruger made a fair number of Speed Six - fixed sight - 9mms that are now pretty hotly sought after. Manhurin made some interchangeable cylinder .357 - 9mm combos, prices intermediate between Python and Korth.

After the lack of response to 547 and 940 I doubt S&W will be back with a 9mm revolver. Their response to the IDPA SSR demand is the 686 .38 Super. I will be getting one, even though it is not just what I wanted (M19 9mm). I do handload and the ability to recover ALL my empties, six at a time, will make up the difference in ammo price.

There were some hints from Taurus but all they have generated so far are the Tracker .45 ACP and a 9mm snubby.

Tom Kilhofer will convert your 686 to handle 9mm, 9x23, and .38 Super in clips in the same gun. Only problem is, he charges $300 to rechamber and clear the cylinder for clips. That will pay the difference between 9mm Slobbovian surplus and .38 Special for a lot of ammo. Read about it at:

Alas, Tony, Ruger only makes limited runs of the SP-101 in 9x19 nowadays, and this isn't a year it's cataloged.

Taurus is coming out with a snubby this summer. I'm going to stick with my S&W 940.

I'd love a K/L-sized 9mm 6-shooter too. I guess there must be too few of us, or the makers don't know about this whole "internet" thing...

Alternatively you can mail order some .38 ammo by the case. $140-$150 including shipping should get you 1000 rounds of S&B, Aguila, American Eagle, or reloads. www.miwallcorp.com

Thanks for the information, I will check out millwall. The 9mm full size will have to be a dream gun.
