Is this decent accuracy?

Hello.

I am somewhat a beginner shooter. I have only shot roughtly 1000 rounds through my Glock 19, and with most of my shooting in an indoor range, I dont have much "real" experience. Now that I am shooting at an outdoor range, I am able to do more experimenting, especially with long range shooting.

Anyway, from what I remember, my groups at the indoor range were pretty bad, but last Saturday I was consistantly hitting Coke cans at 40 yards using plain ol' WWB ammo from my Glock 19, around 8 out of 10 times.

I am just wondering how this compares to every one elses groups?

The only shooting buddies I have are even newer to shooting than I am, so I really have noone to compare to except for the good people on this forum.

I think hitting a coke can 8 out of 10 times at 40 yards with a Glock 19 is some pretty spiffy shooting. I don't think my tired old eyes could even see a coke can at 40 yards. :D
 
You can come to my party any time. 6" @ 40 yards is equal to about 1.5" accuracy @ 10 yards... is that what you shoot at 10 yards??
 
Look, in order to be any good, like the rest of us. You have to shoot groups so tight that the last bullet through actually causes the target to close up leaving no hole whatsoever.

I've done that many a time meself.
 
Shooting at a hanging silhouette at 7 yards at an indoor range is too much anxiety for a beginning shooter, especially with other people watching you.

Plinking at coke cans and clay pigeons at an outdoor range is alot more fun. Nobody is going to laugh at your shooting because they can't see where the bullets are hitting until the can starts dancing or the clay pigeon shatters.
 
I feel you might be experiencing what I call "Hollywood Envy". Many new shooters, myself include, have crazy ideas of what a "good" grouping is with a handgun. I believe a 3 inch group at 10 yards, standing and shooting at a moderate pace to be pretty good. My wife regularly shoots about 5-6 inch groups at this range and thinks she sucks because she cant shoot like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon.

IMO, shooting a soda can regularly at 40 yards with a pistol is excellent shooting. Id have you by my side any day.
 
Test your perception next time. Put a paper plate out at that 40 yards, and see how tight your group actually is. Shooting at 'reactive' targets is fun, but shooting at paper tells you what's really going on. Unfortunately for all our egos, it also reveals how often the can is moving because we hit a piece of reactive sod 16 inches away ;)

If you do this, I predict you'll move the plate in closer for the second string of fire.
 
Don't be afraid to enlist the help of better shooters to improve your performance. However, don't feel that you have to compare your marksmanship skills to theirs. Measure your own progress.

I shoot a lot of NRA highpower and regularly compete with masters and high masters all the time. It's amazing to watch these guys shoot 97% regularly while I'm still shooting at 87%. It's depressing sometimes but I still keep at it.
 
If you're really hitting the can, that's some darn good shooting.

I shoot my Sig Trailside w/ Ultradot at steel spinners at 50 yds., and the 3.5" spinner I can hit about 7 out of 10 times. This is standing, offhand, and this is using .22lr CCI Pistol Match ammo. Most shooters at the range can't even hit it once.

So, again, if you are indeed hitting that can, you're shooting better than most.
 
Not bad if you are actually hitting the can as mentioned and not making it jump by hitting the dirt and rocks around it. To test you acccuracy, I'd find a 25 yard indoor range and a good target and see how small you can do your grouping. Indoor range will take out factor of changing light conditions and weather conditions.

Yes indeed! I pulled this on my wife with an empty ammo box on the berm at about 7 yds making it dance like I was the Sundance Kid by shooting from the hip. Looked impressive as if I never missed, but actually only two rounds actually hit the box, which was more than I expected :)

Who said anything about placing soft drink cans at ground level or against a dirt berm and plinking at them?

A bent paper clip, twine and a staple gun is all that is needed to hang a soft drink can or a clay pigeon from a target backer board at whatever distance you desire. Hitting either consistantly at 25 to 50 yards develops skill which will result in tennis balls sized groups on paper at 7 yards.
 
7 yds. = one ragged hole. It's really too close to be of any value as a measure of accuracy for either pistol or shooter. Gotta move it back to at least 15 yds., preferably more.
 
Indeed. To have a coke-can sized group at 40 yards, your group at 7 yards has to be approximately one sixth the size of a coke can. That's what, 3/8" by 3/4"?
