New Texas CHL Target?

I took my renewal last month, we used the one designated B27 (blue).

IIRC, everything 8-ring or better was 5 points, 7-ring was 4 points, outside that was 3, white was 0 points. I don't know if they changed targets, or if that just happened to be what the instructor had, or what, but that's what we did.

Texas is changing to the B27 target from the old CHL target. The color is instructor choice IIRC. It is not an immediate switch, just changing as they run out of the old targets. When I took the CHL class the middle of last month we still used the CHL target.

I believe they are making the switch because the CHL target tended to make people aim too high. There have been studies done showing that people shoot several inches higher in stressful situations than where they do when they train. Training using the B27 translates to putting your rounds in the center of the thorax during an incident.

Thanks guys, I live in the country and have been drawing off my own targets for family to practice on. It appears mine will still work.

It does seem an odd way of going about things though. I mean, using targets that have to be "translated" to a a different scoring system.

I thought there was an IDPA or IPSC "tombstone" that would work. I could have also been running a fever when i thought that.

Some friends just renewed with the new target.
The five area is larger now and the head only counts three.

Are they trying to make it easier to qualify? Do they want to put
marginally qualified shooters on the streets with guns? Or does having
the head count less make it harder?

I have to renew later this year, so I guess I'll find out.

Walter, a friend just renewed his instructor CHL. He said the DPS said because the 5 ring was high it was causing people, including DPS troopers, to try and shoot too high and get misses.

Myself, when I helped people practice for their CHL qualification I would have them aim at the bottom 3rd of the 5 ring, if they weren't "good shots".
A 4 in the stomach was much better than a miss over the shoulder.

IMO, For most of us "gun people" the CHL qualification is childs play but for a large number of the people that only shoot once or twice a year it's better to teach them to aim where they will get some meat rather than shoot high and miss.

Oh, there's also some changes, like, on the short strings, 1, 2 and 3 shots you don't have to lower the gun.
You can continue to hold your sight picture, finger on the trigger, ready for the next shot.

Anytime you lower the gun, finger off the trigger and safety goes on still.

So you see you can gain time by staying on target.

Again my friend said the change came from having people lower their gun after shooting a round or two, so not being ready for a quick follow up shot if needed.

Funny, when I took the shooting class, I had three flyers go into the blue man's groin area.

I've always said that should count at least a 6.:D

During CHL practice and teaching a friend's wife to shoot the Makarov she did that.
I laughed and said, Boy that will stop him. She got Red faced.:D
