I noticed this morning when I opened my first pound of Hodgdon clays that some of the flakes of powder had little holes through the center, but most did not. Is this normal?

I just want to make sure I didn't get a bad or contaminated batch.

Thanks!

do they look like cheerios?

If so sounds like some Trail Boss flakes got mixed in some how.Don't seem likely but TB does have holes in it, and look like little o's.

Yeah, thats what they look like. Cheerios. I don't see how any trail boss could get mixed in either.

Perhaps this is something I should call them on. I thought for sure someone would tell me that yes indeed this is how Clays should look.

I looked at some Clays... no holes in any granule that I looked at with a magnifying glass.

I looked at some Trail Boss... holes in all granules, naked eye visible.

Trail Boss is about the same color as Clays, granules thicker but only a little larger diameter... but with holes.

I think you have some cross-contamination from Hodgdon's packaging operation.

Call 'em up and talk to a human, don't depend on e-mail, they may end up doing a recall, as they did with the H4227 cans containing 4198.

I looked at my bottle of Clays. It had quite a few flakes with holes in them. The ones with holes appeared to be a little more yellow in color compared to the gray of the others. Trail boss's cheerio flakes were a little bigger and seemed more silver looking to me. Also the hole in them was much bigger than the occasional hole in the Clays. So even though it seems unusual, I don't think there is any mixed powder.
Please post whatever response you get.

That is interesting, my jar of "holeless" Clays has been around a while, since well before Trail Boss came out. Maybe they have changed the mix for cost reduction or availablity of powder from ADI.

Just for fun I took a pic of the two. Clays on the left, Trail boss on the right. As you can hopefully see, the holes in the occasional Clay flake are very small, and they don't look much like the TB cheerios. The color of the holey Clays is also slightly different.

Hope this helps, Griz

Griz, my clays looks the same as yours. I think I'm in the clear here. The trail boss flakes do have a much more distinct cheerio shape.

Thanks for the pics. :)

Bought my first jar of Clays two weeks ago. Haven't even used any yet. Just looked in the container. Yep, there are Cheerio's in mine as well. Mine says it's made in Australia and packed in the USA.

Hodgdon Powder Co.

It probably wont do any good but today I e-mailed hodgdon to ask about the holly powder, maybe I will get lucky and get a reply. If I do I will post it here.

Subject: Clays Powder
I've used Clays for a long time now and today I opened a new bottle and noticed something I have never seen before holes in the middle of the powder?

Is this a change?

I have had good luck getting timely answers from Hodgdon, and other gun related firms as well. I would encourage anyone to at least try before assuming that they will not talk to you.
