Which Milsurp rifle to think about?

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Ishapore 2A1. You get the speed and reliability of a Lee Enfield, but with 7.62 NATO instead of .303. Twelve round mag capacity too. Feeds off strippers, and can mount a variety of knife bayonets.

About the only sticking point is price - if you look you can probably still find them for under $150, but mostly the ones I see are in the $170-190 range now.

Why not consider the SKS? If you REALLY want a bolt action, get the Yugo and turn the gas system off. haha

I'd take my Yugo hunting, to the range, SHTF, or just out plinking over my Mosin ANY day of the week. It's just alot more fun to shoot. And accessories are much more readily available. Prices are almost always under $200.

Not to mention in South Central texas, it's a heck of a lot harder finding 54r than it is finding 7.62x39. And they LOVE the cheap stuff. Monarch / Wolf @ 2.89 for a box of 20.

just my opinion.

M44 for me

I got a rearsenalled M44 with 1948 receiver date, looks and works like new, and was $89 on sale at Big 5 Sporting goods here. Recoil is "manly" but not painful unless you weigh 110 pounds and bruise easily. I've shot it with bayonet out and bayonet back...no appreciable difference at 100 yards that I could see (but then I'm near sighted, colorblind and have 55 years of use and abuse on my eyeballs...your mileage may vary!). It's the most bang for the buck and ammo is cheap. You can't lose the bayonet unless you really want to. The Mosin safety consists of pulling the cocking piece back and twisting it out of the firing slot, which is awkward with a loaded gun, and even more awkward to release safely, but that's the biggest flaw in the design I could see. If you don't chamber a round until you need one, you don't really need to use the miserable safety.

What some of you guys say....

makes me laugh. That is as far as I am going with it too. There is no difference in weight between a 91/30 and a M44 Mosin Nagant. The 91/30 will most likely be more accurate than the M44 due to the longer sighting radius. Like all guns, it depends on the individual rifle. I have shot many of both. I favor the longer rifle but the folding bayonet on the M44 makes a dandy rifle holder while you open a beer. 99 percent of the Mosin stripper clips out there suck. Don't bother.

Mausers, the guys that bad mouth the Turks, most likely don't have one. You can get a like new Yugo 24/47 for 150 bucks now and Yugo ammo is plentiful. Mauser strippers work just fine.

Swiss K31. A very fine rifle but ammo is expensive along with bayonets.

Enfields. Fine shooting rifles but no surplus ammo. Wolf Gold is good ammo and reloadable. A 2A1 shoots 308 which is plentiful.

SKS. Yugo SKS are plentiful now but ammo is short for the near term. Fun rifle to shoot but the 59/66 may be a bit heavy for the weaklings out there that are always complaining about the gun wieght and recoil. Don't be a wimp.

If you can afford them, buy a Mosin and a Mauser. If you don't make a bubba custom out of them, the value will go up, with time........chris3

OK one other thing to think about here is generally the M44 Mosin will shoot to the right unless the bayonet is extended. The M38 is just like the M44 and has no issue with dealing with a bayonet. I would go with the M38. I have had one for several years and I love it. It is the shortest of the Mosins. It does have a kick too it but nothing like a 12 guage with 3 inch mag rounds. I would compare it to my 30-06.

As for stripper clips I have never used them. Easy enough to load one at a time.

Also I have found you are better off shooting the 174 grain yellow tip bullets than the 147 grain silver tip. In mine if I shoot the silver tip I am 3 inches high at 100 yards. With yellow I am dead on. I can consistantly hit a 10 inch steel gong at 200 yards with the yellow tip.

My M44 shot to the left.......

with the bayonet stowed. The the other two shot the same wether or not the bayonet was stowed or extended.......Depends on the individual rifle........chris3

I just cant see why the bayo would have any effect on the accuracy of the rifle.

WARNING Mosinitis is a disease deadly to your pocketbook. Ask me how I know. With a C&R you can find M44 and 91/30 rifles for $65 add a can of surplus ammo and you're ready to go. The cheap Mosins are often in excellent condition, triggers range from very good to very creepy. Most were rearsenaled and put into storage many years ago, often the carbines are counter bored, but this is not a bad thing. If you like attention, try firing an M44 or M38 at a range with full power ammo, the fireball out of the muzzle is about 4 feet across and the muzzle blast is not to be believed, keeps the shooters on either side of you from crowding you.
Again, if you start with milsurps, you will not get just one.

I am pretty set on getting an M44. Thanks for the imput. The only reason I'm really choosing this rifle over the others is because of the price. they are the cheapest guns with the cheapest surplus. That's exactly what I wanted, too. This gun will tide me over until my FAL is complete. My dad owns an SKS, so I can shoot that whenever I want. Hell, that was the first gun I ever killed a deer with.

I just found a good site for all the C&R info I ever needed. Still looking to see how old you have to be to get a license, though...

Deer Hunter,

Please allow me to throw a wrench into your gears. . . . .

The rifle: K98k Mauser! (Can be had from a gunshow for as little as $125.)
Re-barrel to .30-'06 OR .308 Cost - $175 to $200
Ammo: Available anywhere and everywhere.
Stripper clips: Yes. Use stripper clips for either .30-'06 or .308

The only reason I wouldn't go with a Mdl 48 Mauser is the action is a little bit shorter. Now, if you re-barrel to .308, that's another story. Mdl 48 can be had in good condition for about $175 - $200.
These barrels are original profile that I speak of, so, it will look original.
That, and the fact that these rifles are RC (Russian Capture) so, chances are nil that they are all original and collector's pieces.

Bayonets are abundant for the Mauser, plus, the K98k action is about the strongest milsurp action that you will ever find!
And besides. . . . these rifles are GORGEOUS!!!!!

You have to be 21 for C&R.

After you get your Mosin get an Enfield. I like the No.4 Mk.2, but a No.4 Mk.1 is good too. Last I checked, you could get one in good condition from J&G Sales for a little over $100. You should also be able to find a Mk.2 for under 200.

For bayonets, the Mosin has one. The Enfield has five diffenet types. Surplus ammo has become hard to find, but I have(well, had) a crate of 400 rounds that I bought from a gunshow seller for 60 bucks. Strippers are readily available.

Plus it has twice the capacity and better iron sights than those found on a Mosin or Mauser.

I think I'll still go with the mosin, simply because it's so cheap. I can pick on up from one of these online surplus distributers for 60 dollars or less. A can of ammo for 30, and I'm set. I'll stay under 100 dollars and have a fun little toy that will go nicely alongside my FAL when it gets here. I may pick up a mauser or enfield later on, but I think I'll start with a mosin.

C&R is 21, eh? Alright. If you don't have a C&R license, you'll have to order the gun like any other and have it shipped through an FFL, right?

Yup.

Some good folks for xfer here in DFW.

That's alright, I know an old lady down at a local country store that will transfer the gun for me. However, I think I have sparked my dad's interest in a C&R. He said he'd apply for it, so we may do that and wait for the license.

Now that my mind is set on a Mosin Nagant, I've seen various price listings. I've seen them go for 50 dollars to 80. I'm not spending anymore than 80, so that 50 dollar rifle is looking very nice right about now.

Any suggestions when shopping for an M44?

Here ya go:

I was thinking along those lines my self when I paid $125 for this 1912 Steyr Chileno long rifle. It was rearsenaled with a polished blue job and rebarreled in 7.62 NATO and is so marked on reciever ring. There is nothing slicker or stronger than a 1909 Argentine OR a 1912 Steyr pattern 98 mauser. And you are not gonna run out of .308 Win soon! The bayonet sccabard is beat and the handle dinged but the blade is like new, it was $50 and fairly hard to find. This gun shoots ball in less than 2" at 100 yards when my 27 year old son shot it!
