I got an 870 express combo and am using it for trap shooting. It came with a choke which says "MOD" on it, which I assume is "Modified". Is this a good choke for trap shooting? I've seen articles recommending full or Improved Modified...

Modified will work for trap. Use it until you get say 15/25. Then use Full to get you on the birds tighter.

DO pattern. For shotgunners, it's as needed as oxygen.....

For 16 yard trap, Remington's Modified is just fine (Browning's Modified is a bit more open, at least mine is).

The advantage of a tight choke for trap is that you can see where you're hitting more easily, e.g. if you break the left half of the bird, you can actually tell by watching. This helps you make fine adjustments to your shooting.

However, at 16, you can do that with a Modified. Farther back, you'll have a hard time doing it.

Remington's chokes are cheap. Grab a Full choke if you see one at Wally World or something, or just get their "upgrade kit" that includes IC and Full choke tubes, a nicer (faster) choke wrench, and some oil (good for the choke threads as well as keeping the slide slick) in a plastic box. It's around $30.

Addendum...

I know a guy who does pretty well in ATA, using an Improved Cylinder choke for 16 yards. IC will break birds just fine at 16.

He doesn't practice with the really open choke, for the reasons stated above, but he takes advantage of the slightly larger pattern for competition.

Others do the same with Modified.

Thanks I will look into the full choke at some point. I'm shooting about 15/25 now, so I'll probably practice a bit more until I can use the tighter choke.

Also, I got the Knoxx recoil reducing stock for my 870. Now I'm wondering if there is any downside to it in terms of how it affects the accuracy. It seems like it shouldn't have any more effect than any other recoil reducing system, such as a semi-auto might have.

I'm surprised you're getting 15/25 with that stock. It affects things, all right.:what:

Not the accuracy, but the handling of the gun.

You'll be well on your way to running 'em if you put the regular stock back on.

I've messed around with shooting 16 yard trap with anything from FULL to CYL. I prefer FULL, but frankly it's a lot of overkill. MOD would be fine, and in fact I have very good luck (at least 9 or 10 straights) using LIGHT-MOD, which is one small step down from MOD.

Choke For 16-Yard Trap....

On the choke, I strongly agree with Armed Bear. Improved Cylinder is great for 16 yard trap and modified is fine. He's a brave man because most trap shooters have a knee-jerk reflex that keeps them chanting "Full is good and fuller is better!" They've been known to flame people badly, over on some of the heavy duty trap sites, about using anything less than a full choke.

As for a stock, I really need the traditional high-combed trap stock. Big difference in my scores after I got one. They throw the gun's pattern a little bit high and gives me some automatic lead on rising birds. It might be due to me being tall, long armed with heavy chest and shoulders so YMMV on the stock.
