I love to shoot trap with my .410 and despite the small round, I am great with it and can out shoot many of my shooting friends but with a box three times the cost of a box of 12 gauge, my .410 shooting has reclined. That being said, I've been trying to shoot trap with my 870 in 12 but I've been struggling lately and I'd like to try a new set of choke tubes, because on my .410 I ran a full choke. Would a poly choke be a good route to go or should I purchase a set of tubes? And the 870 has a modified choke at the moment if that helps.

That I could not tell you, I seem to get the shot dead on but it just seems like the spread is too much by the time I get it.

No need for a poly choke, your M is just fine.

What you are experiencing is the difference in gun fit - simply put - your 410 fits you better.

That being said, shooting at home is fun, but you may want to take your 12 and 410 to a regular trap club and try both from the 16 and see how you do.As to the expense of 410 ammo, a used MEC Jr. reloader for about $75 and some components can get you loading 410s for about $3/box

A poly will workout it is butt ugly and detracts from the gun value to boot.

Be especially careful with the ported Poly-Choke and ported old style chokes. In Shotguns by Keith, Elmer Keith wrote of a ported Poly-Choke from which a pellet shot out the side and hit a bystander. I seem to recall that the incident occured in a hunting scenario, but I could see it potentially hitting a spectator on skeet range or the like. Perhaps the same would not happen with modern wads and ported choke tubes with angled ports, but still something to consider.

As written above regarding fit, you should measure the cast, drop, and length of pull on your 870 and the 410. Maybe you can adjust the 870 to mimic the measurements of your 410. It also wouldn't be a bad idea to pattern both to see where the point of impact is in relation to the point of aim

Well I am heading to the range this week so I plan on patterning the two shotguns and experimenting with shot sizes. The poly-choke is out completely now from your advice and do you guys think maybe shot size has to do with it? The fits of the shotguns are probably the largest factor for me, the .410 is a Mossberg 183K, a lot smaller and lighter com[pared to the 870.

Of course shot size is important, but I don't think that's your problem here, as a 2-3/4" 12 ga. will have a much higher pellet count (and likely density) in all but extreme scenarios. I should note the .410 bore is traditionally patterned at 25 yds, while other guages are done at 40 yds. You might want to experiment by moving the patterning board around a bit. Keep in mind a pattern boad is a 1D representation of a 3D object, the shot string, or what is essentially the bore size load (at wad separation) evolving into a baseball sized sphere eventually opening up to something like a hula hoop sphere (or larger) at the end of your effective range.

On regulation skeet and 5 stand ,my load of choice for the .410 is Win. AA 2-1/2" with # 8.5 or 9 shot. On doves I shoot Rem Express 3" 7-1/2.

For the 12 ga., I stand by Win AA 2-3/4" #9 on clay targets. On game, #5 or 6 for Pheasant, and anything smaller than 7.5 for Doves.

What loads are you using in both presently?

Do they still make Poly-Chokes? I haven't seen one offered on a newly made shotgun in years, though the one I have on my old Mossberg 20 ga. pump works fine. Only advantage I see to it is that it saves having to keep track of separate choke tubes and that little tube wrench.

GC, they sure do. They even have a website. I haven't really dug around their product list, but I think the modern iteration screws in via the choke tube threads if the shotgun is so equipped.

Your pellet counts are roughly 275--300 for the .410 vs. 425-450 for the 12 ga. About 1/3 more lead in the 12 ga. That's why I don't think the load is your problem.

Best of luck!

Oh well, thanks for the advice anyway guys, maybe I'll just stick with the .410....
