Would-Be Sherman Oaks Robber Critically Injured

(CBS) LOS ANGELES An attempted robbery of a Sherman Oaks pharmacy went awry Friday, after a store employee grabbed the suspect’s gun and shot him several times, police said.

The robbery attempt was made at Maxsons United Drugs, 14070 Ventura Blvd., at 5:25 p.m., Los Angeles police Officer Jason Lee said.

"It's not clear how the employee got hold of the handgun, but he fired several rounds, striking the suspect in the chest," Lee said. "The suspect ran out and got into a waiting getaway car -- a black VW Golf -- and a few minutes later was dropped off at a hospital."

The suspect is in critical condition, and its not known if he will survive his wounds. A second suspect, the driver of the getaway car, is still at large.

The only downside is that the employee had to go through the trauma of shooting someone. Sucks to be the driver. If the robber dies he's probably facing a felony murder rap.

What? You mean they didn't arrest the employee for illegal possesion of a handgun? Assault with intent? Littering (shell cases)? I'm shocked, truly shocked...........

It reminds me of that "stupid criminal video" where the perp walks into the store, and in trying to quick draw his pistol, manages to lose it, it flips into the air, and the clerk grabs it and uses it against the robber.

Situatuational awareness, gun retention, etc., are critical skills is avoiding being in too close of proximity to your threat where your threat can do things like grab your gun, regardless of what side of the situation you are on. While this happened to the bad guy and we think it good, it is a nifty reminder of what can and sometimes does happen in situations to good guys as well.

The would-be robber was wearing body armor, Lee said.

"It's very concerning because they're anticipating being shot... and acting in the face of that, which means that there are tremendous risks to the public because these are individuals that are demonstrating a resolve that is beyond just a demand note,"
"Very concerning?" Ya, I'd say VERY CONCERNING. Actually, I would say it is down right SCARY!

Of course it was only a matter of time before some of these dim wits figured out that if it is good for the goose it must be good for the gander. If this degenerate was wearing armor, where was he shot? If he dies, as noted above, his buddy will get dinged with a homicide charge and, showing good citizenship, the buddy turned himself in.

The robber was was shot several times in the chest by the store's owner...

The suspect is in critical condition, and its not known if he will survive his wounds.

Ok. If the robber was wearing body armor and shot in the chest why is he "in very critical condition"? :uhoh:

Also... anyone notice the name of the LAPD Deputy Chied? (Michel Moore)

This made it into the LA Times:

Would-Be Robber Shot by Store Clerk
From a Times Staff Writer
August 19, 2006

The robbery of a Sherman Oaks pharmacy was foiled Friday afternoon by a store employee who confronted the would-be robber and shot him, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Initial reports indicated that the employee had taken the intruder's gun and turned it on him, but police later retracted that account and said they still were investigating how the shooting occurred.

Despite being shot several times, the robber, who was wearing body armor, managed to flee the store at 14070 Ventura Blvd. and escape in a waiting getaway car, said Officer Jason Lee, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers later received word that a gunshot victim had been dropped off at Tarzana Hospital.

Arriving at the hospital, officers placed the suspect under arrest. Late Friday, he was in critical condition.

The driver of the getaway car was still at large Friday night. Lee described him as a white man with tattoos on both arms, driving a black or dark-colored Volkswagen Golf.

Of course in the paper, the article is stuck on page B9. And it's the last story on the website under the "California|Local News" section. But preceding that is this article, "Many See Virgin Mary in Chocolate Drippings from a Vat." :D

Pump 12Ga

Years ago I had a friend who faced a burglar stupid enough to try to take his Defender 1200 away from him in Dan's living room. The burglar was armed with a screw driver. Things went somewhat bad for the stupid burglar. Dan still holds some national skeet and trap titles. The burglar's been at rest now for about 15 years.

That story had a happy ending.

Dan does say, that he had to replace the carpet and repaint one wall in the living room, though.:(

Where are these guys getting body armor? Stealing it?

Sounds like 2 to the body and 1 to the head would've worked well here.

Was it this guy?:p

To the leftist politicians (who hire the police chief) this is the assault and possible loss of a loyal voting constituent who was pushed into mistakes by hard working people like the customer and store owners who caused the envy.

Good guys or bad guys, the wearing of body armor does not mean they are anticipating getting shot. What a bizarre thing to suggest. That is about as stupid as suggesting that carrying a gun means that you anticipate trying to shoot somebody. Both guns and body armor are simply tools. Body armor is passive and provides protection simpy by being worn (assuming it is the proper rating and covers the areas being shot). A gun must be active for use in defense or offense. In either case, their presence alone doesn't indicate intent.

Happy endings are wonderful.... Problem is, the ending has not happened yet. As soon as I hear the store owner is not prosecuted for some crazy law, or loosing a civil suit then it will truly be a happy ending.

victim

not to beat a dead horse further, but I also love how the times reporter refurs to the suspect as a gunshot 'victim.' Though I suppose it is semantically accurate.

I have to disagree there. There's only one reason a criminal would have a gun and that's to shoot people. Just as there's only one reason a criminal would wear body armor because he knows he could get shot.
