With all of the school violence lately, I've been writing e-mails to a lot of reporters. I thought I'd toss out my thoughts on the point of doing so. Nothing new or revelatory, but maybe a reminder to stay on The High Road. For me, convincing someone with very different views of something reminds me of a situation from college.

I had this friend, John, in my freshman dorm who hated homosexuals. Hated. This other guy, Bill, that became friends with most of us, was gay.

John at first hated Bill because he was gay. But he was forced to be around him. As he saw more and more of Bill, he started to realize that Bill wasn't going to rape him or anything. At first, he just asked him a lot of sterotypical questions. Bill was a sport and would answer him honestly, but lightly, and was a funny guy.

John went from hatred to a kind of fascination to finally being friends with Bill just like the rest of us. He was no longer that queer, he was Bill. Bill was gay, but so what. Dave was Philippino, I was a vegetarian, Paul was southern. The key was him realizing that being gay wasn't just this thing he could label him with and not have to think about anything else.

It's a slow process, but I think that writing intelligently and calmly to the antis helps accomplish that first step. It makes them realize that we're not foaming at the mouth overall-wearing fat guys all just dying for our chance to blow someone away with one of our two hundred guns. And hopefully it helps remind us that not every anti out there is some quivering liberal who's afraid of his own shadow and wants to lock us away.

It's not going to change with my letter, of course. But maybe one day one of these authors says to some rabid anti, "Well, I know a lot of them are like that, but I've actually gotten a lot of really intelligent well-reasoned letters from them..." Then maybe he sees a news story about someone saving someone else with a firearm and thinks back to all of those rational, calm letters he's seen and thinks, "Gosh, maybe that wasn't just some cowboy looking to blow someone away. Maybe that really was just someone doing what they had to to protect someone."

I also always bring up my girlfriend and how I want her to be able to protect herself. I think the idea of a small woman being able to realistically defend herself from a large man intent on attacking her is a very compelling argument. I don't know who couldn't cheer for a gal blowing away a would-be rapist.

Finally, I've been closing with an offer to come along for some safe, fun shooting any time and saying I'll buy the ammo. Deep down inside everyone wants to shoot, don't they?

I don't mean to come off preachy. I've really been affected by those on here who write effectively and intelligently and just wanted to say thanks and that you've got one more guy doing his best to do the same.

Amen to the high road approach.

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but...
Then maybe he sees a news story about someone saving someone else with a firearm and thinks back to all of those rational, calm letters he's seen and thinks, "Gosh, maybe that wasn't just some cowboy looking to blow someone away. Maybe that really was just someone doing what they had to to protect someone."
Then his editor reads it and says, "That won't sell papers! Sensationalize it or it gets dropped. Keep making this mistake, and you get dropped."

Great advice, and i'd like to take it a step further and tell you that this was a well thought out piece, about how we can't categorize individual humans because of one of their personal attributes, and how your story has a great message that formed the basis of this great nation, and will hopefully live on for millenia...
Unfortunately, i don't trust vegetarians, so it's all bunk to me.

(Just kidding! :neener: )

Then his editor reads it and says, "That won't sell papers! Sensationalize it or it gets dropped. Keep making this mistake, and you get dropped."

For all too many mainstream media sources, this is undoubtedly true. Still, we need to try.

Enough wind and water will move mountains. Perseverance is the key.

I was a vegetarian

YOU'RE A VEGETARIAN!!! BAN HIM !!!
:neener: ;) :neener:

I is always best to use persuasive writing whenever debating or responding. You may not convince that person, but you might convince someone else. Irrational arguments don't impress anyone.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

As far as selling papers, I meant more that the guy's opinions would start to shift and that would come out in his writing than he'd specifically write up a good shooting.

As far as the vegetarian thing, this is actually all just my insidious ploy to begin converting you all. I'll have you shooting at tofu soon enough.

I will eat tofu the day you shove it into my cold, dead mouth. :neener:

And I hope you realize that I am kidding.

Seriously, I love me some veggies, but tofu blows.

As for the gay thing, I think a lot of people are like that. I don't know many "queer haters" who actually know a gay person.

And guns. Great parallel. Most anti-gunners are simply afraid of guns and have never been around them, at least not in a safe way. The best way to convert them is to expose them.

Maybe you could start a Vegetarian gun owners group, a la the Pink Pistols. "The Second Amendment is not about hunting, and we are the proof." I think it would go over wonderfully.

That was a great, well thought out posting. Little steps will work, if enough of them are taken.

I'll have you shooting at tofu soon enough.

I'll shoot at it any day - but I'll never eat it again! :barf:

Long story short, wife went on a diet, so did I. Never, never, never again!

Tofu is just fine with plenty of bacon. :neener:

Then maybe he sees a news story about someone saving someone else with a firearm and thinks back to all of those rational, calm letters he's seen and thinks, "Gosh, maybe that wasn't just some cowboy looking to blow someone away. Maybe that really was just someone doing what they had to to protect someone."
Thing is that in itself is a "sensationalist" story ... its a heroic story. Heroic stories sell papers too.

Actually I've had tofu with my Chinese vege's at the Mongolian bar. And no, it doesn't taste like chicken, but it is ok. :p

But enough of hijacking the thread. Back to The High Road.

I love this forum. You guys and gals are all right.

I have had tofu and I have had bacon.
Even bacon can't save tofu.

I don't think I have the patience for your approach any more.
Communicating with liberal reporters is bad for my blood pressure.

Come on over for Thanksgiving and I promise to changes some minds. We do the track in the morning and stuff ourselves silly in the afternoon. If you're thinking mushy white cubes, you're not getting the good stuff. Don't give up just yet.

I know what you mean about being frustrated. At least our side can blow off steam and hit the range.

Gay hate

It reads like a term paper by "Barney" the purple dinasour. "I'm OK. You're OK. There is no right or wrong. No good or evil in the world. Let's just all be at peace. Let's just accept people for what they are."

Puke.

A guy who does what fags do is more disgusting than a dog 4 days dead. I don't hate them, but I will not accept or condone their behavior and I will not accept their presence (when I know about it) near me or mine.

Folks had best wake up. There IS right and wrong, good and evil. The evil that promugates homoseuxality is the same evil that wants to disarm and subject all mankind. It is all one battle.

BTW, I do hate tofu! It's just nasty.

Our local paper printed a letter to the editor like that just this week. In the Scranton Times someone wrote intelligently about the recent school shooting, about the need to protect children, police being to late, arming a teacher, etc... I was surprised they printed it.

And then, true to their form, immediately below the letter was a cartoon of a teacher standing in front of a bullet riddled chalkboard. The caption read "See children, how guns make us safer?"
