Ok, after some deliberation, and to some extent revelation, my wife and I have decided to start over again with regard to the handguns we own. I need another 1911 (traded the last one away like a fool), and she needs a gun that fulfills her wants and needs better than the Bersa .380 Thunder she currently has.
So over the next few weeks we’ll be making visits to the various shops local to us and in Houston (an hour drive) to peruse, price, and in her case get a “hands on” feel for the various options available. And we (ok I) would like any advice, suggestions etc that you kind folks can provide.

I guess I should explain why the Bersa isn’t working out; first she has large hands and the bersa’s grip is a little small for her hands. Second and I don’t know if this is a characteristic of the design or just our example, but the DA trigger pull is rather heavy and there is a very distinct and noticeable (both audible and tactile) CLICK around halfway through the trigger stroke in DA, since this is the first DA/SA pistol that my wife has ever dealt with the combo of those two is distracting and detrimental to her accuracy with the gun.

The following is what she says she would like to have in a pistol, in no particular order

First, she does not at this time want a revolver; she has no real experience with one and would rather learn and be comfortable with a semi-auto.

Second, 9mm for inexpensive ammo, viable self defense round and less recoil than a .45 (this and the tiny sights on the Springfield WW2-GI were her only complaints about my 1911, btw)

Third, she is still open to SA or DA/SA, but a DA/SA type would have to have a DA trigger that was a significant improvement over that of the bersa (problems noted above)

Fourth, no stainless, hard chrome, or other “silvery” finishes, such remind her of the cap guns her and her brother play with as a kid and do not look “real” to her (even SS receivers on O/U shotguns strike her as a little off) so the finish has to be blued, parked, or other blue, black, etc type.

Fifth, must fit her hands. Frankly I think grip shape will have more effect in this than size, as she has rather large hands for a woman as large as or larger than many men I’ve known of a similar height/body size. And unless the shape is wrong I just don’t see much of anything short of a Desert Eagle being too huge to deal with.

Six, she wants something that “looks like it would be military (or police) issue”. May take on this is “no cutesy guns!” i.e. again it has to look real, not like a toy, or fashion accessory. Or it could just be that it’s a hold over from being an army vet.

Seven, it has to be concealable; we both plan to take the TxCHL course in early to mid 2007. And she’d like what she gets now to have maximum utility both at the range and to be carried, while fulfilling the other criteria; at this point I think this is one of the less “written in stone” requirements.

Lastly, the upper limit on price is around $550-600 and the only one on the prelim list I’ve thought of to look at (that I’ve found a legit price other than MSRP on) in that range is the Barretta 92FS, everything else is at or below the $500 mark.

These are the models that I personally have been able to think of that might fulfill what my lovely, caring wife is looking for. But as I noted at the top of the post, I’m looking for any and all advice or further info I can get my hands on, so please feel free to criticize or add to whatever you feel.

Barretta 92FS; one of the first thoughts for me when it comes to, “modern 9mm in a military looking package”. I know it’s a bit large for the concealability and with regard to grip size but won’t know how it feels/fits till we try and with care and creativity (or something like a Safepacker) just about anything can be a CCW piece.

CZ75; have always heard good things about these pistols and have known a number of people that were very happy with theirs.

A 1911 style pistol in 9mm; she likes the “normal” ones and the full sized 9mm versions tend to tame recoil rather well. Anyone know if there is a 9mm commander (I think it’s called that, the models with full sized frames and a 4 - 4.5” barrel) on the market?

Ruger P95; the first 9mm (and only “family owned” Vs. “friend owned”) I ever had experience with, I liked it and if it fit my wife, I would not mind having another (my father still has the one I used to play with).

Charles Daly or similar Hi-Power clone (can’t afford a “Real” Browning at $700+ and I haven’t seen an FN in 9mm in awhile); single action high cap 9mm, again if it fits her hand this would be something I could see as a very good match to most of her wants.

Well if you can see any holes in my logic or other options to try, please let me know. Quite frankly all feedback is appreciated.

Sounds like a 9mm Commander which you can find used but it'll be at the upper end of your price range and take a bit of hunting. The CZ and Beretta have, to me, a chunkier feel in the grip than a 1911. I find the CZ-75B a quite acceptable DA pull for the first shot and it's available in SA only....super reliable guns.

BHP would probably be the next choice but that's a very different trigger...she should rent one and will know in 2 minutes if it's a viable option. You can find good examples of real Brownings in your price range (I got a NIB Mark III via internet for $430 3 weeks ago) and new or lightly used FNs are plentiful...new may have the SFS which I understand doesn't compromise the trigger feel significantly but is still another gadget to go wrong. No experience w a Ruger at all.

Why not a glock ?

As far as I can tell a Glock 19 would definitely fit the bill. It matches her criteria very nicely and can be had locally for under $500.00.

Parts and accessories can be found cheap and easy as well.

The CZ is a good idea. I have the CZ P-01 and my wife loves it. I think that will be hers soon.

I guess I'll be the first of what will probably be many to say it, why not look at an XD9. They're reasonably affordable, very reliable, and fits all your other criteria.

Another option would be the S&W M&P in 9mm. My wife has the .40 version as her bedside gun. The interchangable backstraps really allow her to "fit" the gun to her grip. (She also has a CZ P-01) The other recommendations are good ones also...we also have a few 1911's, Glocks, etc. Just didn't want you to miss out on the possibility of the M&P.

Shopping for a new gun is fun.

Have her swing by my site and read up on how to make sure a gun really fits your hands: http://www.corneredcat.com/FirstGun/TryOnGun.htm

Gun recommendations (in no particular order):
  • Glock 19 or Glock 26 -- IMO, the 26 is a better carry choice, but with larger hands she may prefer the 19 anyway. If she goes for the 26, magazine extensions may help, both for increased capacity & for increased grip length.
    .
  • XD-9, with a different bore axis than the Glock and a grip safety.
    .
  • For 9mm 1911, Springfield makes a nice one.
    .
  • HK P2000SK or P2000, with LEM trigger
    .
  • Browning HiPower (assuming her hands really are large enough; have her double-check that she can reach all the controls)

Happy shopping!

I will second the SA XD in 9mm or a commander 1911, But to get a good qaulity one may take you a bit out of your range.

Here's a short list of pistols meeting her criteria that come to mind

-FN/Browning Hi-Power; both Sarco and AIM have surplus ones right now
-Beretta 92; you already know about this one
-CZ-75/85/P-01/SP-01, whichever fits her
-Glock 19; a nice midsize option
-Springfield XD9; Glock alternative
-Used SIGs; great guns, look at their CPO (certfied pre-owned) program
-Used Commander size 1911s; Kimber's Pro Carry in 9mm comes to mind
-Used HK USP Compact
-FN FNP9/Browning Pro9
-Beretta PX4
-S&W M&P
-Ruger P series autos

Now you just need to see what fits her hand.

Why not a glock ?

i KNEW i forgot to add something, no Glocks, or XDs, she won't go for it i asked (during the inital ideas session that lead to this thread). Seems my biases rubbed off on her a bit, appearently if i wouldn't carry a given design she doesn't wanna either. and the only way i would ever carry a Glock, or XD is if i had no other choice. just not my thing.

plus she on her own thinks they look like a 2x4 with a trigger (not gonna go over well)

You may be able to find a used para in 9mm. The challenge will be finding a commander length in 9mm within your price range but it can be done.

Some good suggestions above, but I'll add a couple more...

Have her hold a Steyr M9-A1 or (subcompact) S9-A1. It's like a thinking mans Glock. All-Business looks, and great ergonomics.

Also look at the Walther P99c. Reliable, comfy, great all-around 9mm weapon.

Ruger p sreies they come in blue witha good choice of variations and are built like a tank When the P 85 first came out there was an article on toture testiing the pistol.Ruger engineers put in a barrel with a cut chamber but no bore (just a plain solid rod) They mounted the pistol in a vice chambered a round ran behind a wall and fired the pistol large piece of the slide was gone BUT everything stayed where it was supposed to be. I had a Ruger P series and remembered this line from the manual in a nutshell P series is rated for standard +P or +P+ ammo.
there is no factory ammo that cannot be fired in a Ruger.

My wife preferred the XD, but given your objections my next choice would be either a hi power or a CZ. Hi power if you want SA, and the CZ for DA/SA.

Your price range could get you in to some very nice used or CPO SIGs, as suggested above.

For concealable but still full size grip, look at the 225 or 228. They're both mid-size guns, and they are both serious-looking hardware (not a cutesy gun). The 225 is single stack and would probably be a little easier to conceal. The 228 is double stack. There is also a 9mm 229 that is very similar to the 228 but has a machined stainless steel slide (finished in black) which makes it heavier - helpful for recoil management but possibly less carry-able.

CZ 75 is a fairly large gun to conceal, but a very sweet shooter. They do make a compact version that is a bit smaller and more concealable.

My wife ended up with an XD9. She said it fit her hand better than a glock or a Taurus ??, plus a few others she looked.

First why don't you concentrate on looking at what you want and let her shop for what she wants. It sounds like she knows what she wants and she just has to see what fills her specs.

For the lady-

Capsian frame and slide,, 1911 Commander sized , Blue, nice custom Tulipwood Stocks , in 9x23 . :D

May I suggest the Royal Guard IWB by Galco to compliment this 9x23. :)

It brings out her eyes, and her personality really makes this gun look gun on her...

Hey, these are NICE!

If this is not acceptable, then a Browning HP is the only way to go.

Sorry, but I am in my "Steve is very biased" mode right now. So forget all the normal and correct suggestions I usually give.

You are welcome, and do not forget to post pics.

Steve

how about the BHP with the Detective slide installed? its an inch or so shorter if I recall.

My wife just picked out a H&K USP compact 9mm and loves the pistol. She also really likes the BHP and it's off getting customized, stippled, trigger job etc, for her. My XD9 was fine for her, but she likes the position of controls on the HP and USP better. She can reach both slide stop and safety very easily on both pistols. Plus the XD9 is "mine". Anyway, I let her pick out what she wanted and what felt good in her hand. She chose, IMHO the best 9mm out there, the BHP and a high quality polymer framed H&K. I knew there was a reason I married her...:D

Said before but I'll repeat it. The CZ-75, the Beretta PX4, or the Browning High Power. Good luck

Look around and see if you can find some of the other Taurus such as the PT 909 , 940 , 911 etc. to try on , they are HiCaps so they have larger grips without being too big for medium sized hands , can be had in 9mm or 40 S&W or 45 acp "PT945" OAL is that of a Commander style weapon . They can be carried in DA or SA condition one like a 1911 , can be found with factory night sights and even light rails on some models .
