my wife wants a p238

Get her a Mak. Super reliable, just over $200, slim, and the round is more powerful than .38 (not in the Luger territory yet). The recoil isn't bad although it's been ages since I shot one. If she doesn't like it you have a relatively cheap cool gun.

Got her what she'll Shoot: P238

Wifey learned and earned CCL on a P239, and I bought her a Kahr PM9 for carry. She didn't like the recoil, and reduced practice time accordingly. Worse, I noticed she could barely (and sometimes not) rack the slide due to the spring, and the thought of a jam (in a jam) really bugged me. Bring on the P238: Recoil and slide are a breeze, she practices all the time, and I doubt she'll run into anything that a mag of Cor-Bon DPX's won't slow down (and now that cool little PM9 rides in my own DeSantis!) Yes, the Sig is painfully expensive, but I'm not about to cut corners on a six-foot blonde who loves guns, loves golf, works and earns tons of dough, yet cooks dinner every night (don't know where I'd find another one.)

I have a P238 blued and really like it for concealed carry. It literally disappears in a pocked holster and weighs almost nothing. Recoil is surprisingly gentle and with 1911 controls are instinctive for me.

If your choice is .380ACP or nothing, I like my odds with the .380ACP thank you.

Can't teach a young dog old tricks

Nothing I can add to the numerous overwhelming recommendations and reasons to go with her and the P238. But if you keep stalling and ask enough people... you will eventually hear what you want to hear. Or just ask the urchin behind the gun counter.

Paladin 38-40 Says It All!

It does seem like you are rather determined to keep asking until enough respondents agree with you. I don't mean that as a criticism, just an observation.
I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to guns and have tried (literally) EVERY 'pocket' .380 and 9mm generally available (bought and sold most).
My own personal choice is the Sig P238.
Yes, I know the 9mm is a better round for SD...but, in a gun this size, I find that I can shoot the miniature .380 much, much more accurately.
I can place 7 out of 7 rounds in the 9-10 rings at 15-feet, one-handed, every time, after a quick, pocket-draw - in less than 5 seconds.
I simply can't do that with a 9mm in the same basic size.
I'm sure some people can...not me.
If I take the time (which I probably wouldn't have in an emergency situation) to use both hands and shoot more slowly I can put all 7 in the 10 ring at 20-feet.
This is not hard with the P238 (and downright easy with my Sig P-226), but I could not do it with the Kahr PM9, or any other similar-size 9mm. The recoil just twists that little grip in my hand a bit too much to stay on target.

My point is not that I'm a marksman...it's simply that I'd rather put a smaller, less powerful round into a vital spot than 'spray' larger, more powerful rounds that won't hit anything that would immediately end the threat.

I've been shooting all my life, and if I can see such a difference, I'm thinking your wife could too. My bet is she won't LIKE (nor want to shoot) the 9mm but will feel comfortable with the .380 and, therefore, learn to shoot it well.

For the record, my normal daily carry is a Kimber Ultra Covert II .45 ACP w/ Crimson Trace grips.
It's added weight and larger grip allow me to shoot this weapon with great accuracy. But, sometimes, a "pocket-gun" is the only carry option.

So buy her a p238 already.

If, after a while, she doesn't like it and wants something else, you can pack it up and mail it to me. ;) :D :)

And while you're at it, have her look at the Bersa Thunder. Granted it is also in .380, but it is light, thin and [felt] recoil is low.

Even the larger 9mm X 19's the recoil is a little high. The smaller you go and the 9mm really gets snappy.

You have a wife who wants you to buy her a handgun?!?!?!

Just shut the h*** up and quit making the rest of us jealous. Go out and buy her whatever handgun she wants.

Now!

Best advise so far on this thread.

my wife loves her p238. she got glo in the dark pink camo grips. she has smaller hands, it fit her hands perfect. and we are both 1911 fans so it works for her

I love my Sig Sauger P238 pistol. I have had it now for 3 months and put several boxes through it. If there were one thing I would change, it would be lightening up the trigger pull; it’s harder than my Kimber Grand Raptor 1911 w adj. sights. The Sig is spot on and fun to shoot; unlike my Grand Raptor which took a lot of site adjusting, which frankly was very disappointing. I use a Desantis Gunhide holster which has an adjustable clip and I cross carry so it was perfect. The only other thing is I found the clip with the plastic bump to be a real necessity for me. It made the grip so much more rigid allowing me to get all fingers on the grip. Without the extra bump my little finger road under the clip and didn’t work for me. Photo's won't upload, but the following shortcuts work. :(

Not sure why I can't post a photo here, but this was the only way it seemed to work at all.

first gun my wife wanted was this LCP.

I knew this was a rare opportunity so i ponied up the dough and bought it for her. She loves it, even though it's a stupid LCP and it's hard to shoot accurately. I'll prob send off the slide to have the sights added at some point (forgetting name of the shop that does it).

I would highly recommend the Sig 238 for your wife. It is bullet placement that is important and the 238 shoots beautifully. I just sold my Karr PM40 to a police officer friend for his off duty carry pistol because I did not enjoy shooting it and could not shoot it very well. I took him shooting last Thursday and was very impressed how well he could shot the 40. I just purchased the nice Sig 238 for my carry pistol and look forward to shooting it with enjoyment. Best of luck!

Well guys she decided against the p238 and it wasn't my fault. I took her, and the cash to buy her what ever gun she wanted so she could be happy.
We shot every pocket 9 known to man, and they were all a no go, how ever she did like the emp. She shot lcp, kahr 380, p238 and she did like the p238. The last two she wanted to try was the xdsc and the m&p9c. She said the xd feels the best in my hand. So I brought her home and picked up my xdsc9 and off to the range we went. She shot LIGHTS out with, I was real proud of her as I've never seen her that accurate. She was excited as she's never put consistant groups like that together. She quickly said I want it. I said ok but its thicker than your 26 and its far from slim like you wanted.
She said she wanted to carry mine the rest of the day in my galco king tuk holster to see how she did. I bought her a good belt and by the end of the day she said with out a doubt she want the xdsc. So thats how it all ended up.

Yeah, be happy that she's even into guns. Let her get it, or the 938, or whatever she wants.

Nothing wrong with .380. I carry a Beretta M85FS in .380 sometimes, and don't feel under gunned.

Edit: Just saw she got something else. Good deal!

My Sig P238

As mentioned I love this little pistol; but as usual for me. I decide what pistol I want and when I go to the LGS, I never choose the one I had decided on. For me it comes down to how the grip feels in my hand. I chose this P238 because it had the extended clip bump that doesn’t usually come with the pistol. I would NEVER have gone for the titanium but the grip was rougher than any of the other P238 and the addition of the clip was the decision maker. In my humble opinion you have to hold a pistol before you find the one you want.

This is easy if that's what she wants that's what she gets. :) If your worried about the performance of the round don't just load it up with Critical Defense or Gold Dot a mag full of either will put the nastiest of bad guys down for the count. If you go with something she doesn't like it most likely will be "forgotten" at home and she will be left to defend herself with pointy sticks and no hubby wants that.
