its not like you can say they are cowards or that they are uninformed. they are incredibly informed. they have information shoved down their throats by the media. but that information is either skewed or simply wrong. they are talking about this round as if it is a killing machine. and this type of talk seems to be the norm. of course a public that didnt know any better would believe the police man's quotes. its just sick that they are so misinforming.

Great Googaly Moogaly

Well I have always loved British humor but this is taking things a bit far.
On a more positive note the Guardian is viewed in the same light as The Sun, Enquirer or Weekly World News in most of Briton so do not think that they are all Panicking Pansies They are not, Fact is one of the toughest SOB's I ever knew was a Brit.

while one live .22 bullet is not that dangerous in the grander context of violence in east london, it is symptomatic of wider issues, and the unarmed majority of the british population do not like sharing their high streets with people with guns.

My God! He's right! There could be a complete box or two of .22 Short ammunition in someone's possession.

Next thing you know, they'll be shooting ISSF Sanctioned Rapid-Fire* matches in the streets!

The horror!

*Yes, I know, ISSF changed the rules to mandate that .22 LR be used in Rapid Fire.

food for thought:

british laws do not protect british citizens, and make it easier for violent yobs to do as they please. logical conclusion.....it makes far more sense to be a violent yob in britain, then to be a law-abiding citizen.

british laws are encouraging the growth of the criminal element.

nice sig zundfloge, and how true. also, one might say that british laws are making it more 'comfortable', or 'lucrative' to be a criminal. after all, there seem to be no consequences for said element.

Unfamiliarity breeds fear, doesn't it? When I was a foolish kid, we used to play with 22 shorts. You can set them off pretty easily by whacking them with a tack hammer (we'd tape them down to a cinderblock and hit the rim; could have killed us, but miraculously never did.), but it would be a hard thing to do by accident. Putting one on a woodstove will also do it, but it's not going to go off just sitting there on the doorstep. Unless the building burns down.

People who are unfamiliar with guns are sometimes terrified of them, the same as they would be of snakes. But familiarity tends to turn that fear into a healthy respect.

Their media...CLEARLY wants people to believe that these "self-firing" bullets are absolutely deadly, a complete and monumental threat to society.

Hmmmm...anyone know any other media outlets that write their stories that way?

Wow, I thought this was an Onion article or something at first.

Then I clicked on the link...

Just wow...

This must be from The Onion, UK Edition

It must be!

People are not *that* silly, are they? Even with the various creeping laws that have smothered gun use there, there are still shoots, Yes? And shooting clubs? And air-rifles?

As final proof that this is either satire in its entirety, or at least some righteous sarcasm on the part of Khan, I submit that this is about a single round of ... .22 short?! I know they exist, but I've never even seen one in real life -- it might be fun to have a tiny .22 short revolver, though.

That would be like that commercial when everyone is standing around looking at the trash next to a garbage can getting all angry and then some guy casaully walks buy and throws it out.

except it would be like a bunch of people gettin mad over the bullet

They didn't send the explosive ordnance disposal team to blow it up with RDX? I'm dissappointed.

No need, just call my little brother.

A box of .22 and a handful of straws from Dairy Queen and he can take care of them. (If you don't know what that means then you were clearly not curious enough when you were 11  )

It's truly amazing how unhinged they have become. What in the world will they do when the Jihadist really get their freak on over there?

I wonder what would happen if someone pointed out their is more destructive power in a teaspoon of gasoline than that titty-bitty cartridge.

...handguns were banned (more or less) after the dunblane school massacre of 1997 - no firearm or ammunition can be owned without a licence, and these are not easy to come by.
Oh yeah? Great idea! How's that working out for ya?

a small handgun or pistol, and both can be owned legally under licence.

BZZZT! Wrong! New labour banned smallbore pistols in 1997. I call bull**** on this guy for a couple of reasons. One, he calls it a 'licensce' whch is incorrect, it's a certificate, two he thinks a loose .22 RF is dangerous and three he is talking about firearms in a negative way to the media. I don't see how anybody could have an FAC and act like that so I say he was lying when he said he had a gun licensce.

I can assure you there is one Enlgishman left who would not freak out at the sight of a .22 cart ;)

Ok, let's compare and contrast. I came out of my doctor's office a week or so ago (I remember it well because five minutes later I got rear-ended by an idiot with no insurance) and when I looked down, I realized I had nearly stepped on a live round of .17 Mach someone had dropped there in the parking lot. (No, it wasn't mine!)

I picked it up, put it in my console and drove away. I don't HAVE a .17, but hey, free ammo just lying around . . .

Subject: Hot News Tip!
Dear Mr. Williams,
I am shocked beyond belief and write this letter to you in terror. However, the public must be made aware of the tremendous danger they are unwittingly subject to. While walking down my street with my digital caliper today, I came to the understanding that this once peaceful lane is in fact a ticking timebomb, truly a warzone! I was stunned, upon investigating with said caliper, to discover many, many rocks with a diameter of .177 inches - which I'm sure you know, being the weapons expert the world respects you as, to be the same deadly caliber that so many airguns today are waiting to blast the brains of innocent babies and their puppies out with! Who would have known that such a ready supply of death-dealing ammunition was hidden among us? While you are only one man, I urge you from the bottom of my heart to write an article that does equal justice for this threat as you did for the single cartridge of LIVE rimfire ammunition earlier this week. I dare not get ahold of myself, but I think you may well earn a journalist award of some sort, and at the very least to inspire the legislature to enact laws against menacing rocks of all calibers. We absolutely cannot rest until every rock is cast off our planet, for fear of the egregious harm they could visit upon any person at any time. Thank you for your continued efforts to bring people the unbiased and unsensationalized truth, and I hope you will take up this cause, much more noble than any you've dealt with before.
