After spending most of my life with the 44 magnum and having owned S&W 29's, and 629's, a Colt Anaconda and others. I can say without any hesitation the the Ruger Redhawk and or the Ruger SRH Alaskan in 44 magnum are the best all around for the price. That's from my experience and those of friends.
A good used Redhawk can often be had for under $400, which makes it tough to beat for a rugged, affordable, accurate & reliable .44 caliber field revolver.
That being said, a Smith & Wesson model 29 or 29-2 is the class of the field in my book.
3.) Taurus : A good quality gun that's still trying to live down it's early reputation for poor quality. A gun that is reasonably priced, but does not retain it's price as well as the S&W guns.
I just ordered a Taurus Model 44 with a 4" barrel today, hope I'll like it when it comes in. I ordered it just by having seen pics on the web. It was stainless and cost $449. The dealer told me, in his opinion, Taurus was a good buy for the money. He also said exactly what mrrivrat said above.... told me if I plan to resell later, the smiths would hold their value better...
