What Is Your Favorite Self Defense Revolver? S&W629

The 629-4 gets Lower end Magnum and occasionally a few cylinders full of Hotter 300gr ammo. I meant I just don’t shoot H110 300gr Handloads all the time in it. I got The 629-4 in the box and Like new condition. I just don’t abuse it…. And want it to stay nice.
The 29-2 never gets 300gr projectiles and is treated like a Hot 44 spl with occasional Warm mag ammo
The 29-2 with a cast 247gr and 19grains of 2400 shoot exceptionally well. That’s as hot as it gets.

Point being, No need to redline the racecars every time I take em out. If I need more, I grab my Xp 100 or a rifle.

I get it with the 29-2, but why the 629-4? Shouldn’t that stand up ok to hotter loads? I thought (from reading, not personal experience) that 629 -3 onward with the endurance package were pretty robust.

Thanks. I asked because I’ve been looking at 629-3 and 4s with every intention oto subject it to a bit of abuse from time to time. It Helps hearing your perspective.

The 629-4 is ,I believe -The top of the designs, has everything great and nothing that isn’t. Endurance package, Non Mim parts and Mines 6.5”. That barrel length is just enough yet not difficult to carry for hunting….with a set of 500 grips on it, soaked up the recoil well. It’s the classic model- Full underlug and tapped for scope. Chamfered Cylinder and Front blade has orange insert. It’s a Cadillac of a 44 mag. Oh and it shoots!

That’s a sweet looking 629!
I’m leaning towards the half under lug. Im torn about the extra weight off the full lug vs the added benefits when shooting heavy loads. I do like my 6” full lug 686. Apologies if I’m getting too narrow or off topic….

When ya shoot warm ammo- to hot…. The underlug definitely helps. Tho a half is nice as well for carry

I've found that the Governor can be pretty versatile for me, so it's a home defense revolver. My 629 is darn near the all-around best personal defense when I'm out wherever.

Assessment and diagnosis
Smithitis Definition-

Unconscious thoughts of S&W models, various Searches for what is the best model that day, Drooling and twitches are common . Along with malnutrition from spending all extra money on guns, then eating Mac and Cheese for a month.

- Got me Years ago. It’s controllable yet requires endless hours of work to pay for the Therapy needed at the Range and Gun shops. Gets worse before it gets better.

Suggestion- Seek help at your local gun range for brass and then reload. Helps you think about other things…. Like Ballistics and Reload data.

For me it is the 3 inch sp 101 357 mag.

I could use it for SD, I suppose. The trigger is certainly good enough. I can't shoot it quickly like a K-frame 38, but it's as accurate.
