Santa got me a 45 last year after I turned 45, so it must be ok, right?
I might buy the .44 Mag for my 44th b-day

The 44 Magnum is a great revolver, particularly if you reload. If you don't, it could get quite expensive. I reload 50 rounds at a time.
My good friend sold me his 629 7.5" Hunter with an Aimpoint and a Dillon 450. It was an offer I couldn't and didn't refuse. Since then I have gone up, and up, in caliber. Challenging myself along the way, reloading and shooting further and further with each.
I now, consider the 44 Magnum to be quite light, considering the other guns I shoot, these days.

I have owned a S&W 629 8 3/8 barrel for about ten years. It is the envy of all my friends, gunners and non gunners alike. It is a beautifully made firearm. And let me tell you, of all the hand guns I own I find that the bullets that leave that barrel try harder then any other to make me look I know what I'm doing. It is a tack driver. With that long barrel it is not unpleasant to shoot either even one handed. All day( if you can afford it, reload to save).
I also own a M29 4". I like that one a lot also. Fit and finish on a Smith is second to none. The 4 inch barrel however does not let all the powder burn before the bullet leaves the barrel. It shoots fire balls as well as bullets and my god does it go BANG. The reduced barrel also increases recoil and I find that after 25 rounds or so my hand has had enough and I'll move on to .38s or something else less punishing. I am 6'2" 280lbs so not exactly a light weight. It may not be as bad with rubber grips but I run wood on my revolvers.
The .44 is a great cartridge thought. One of my favorites. I've been buying S&W revolvers for about a decade. Everyone has all the hated features(MIM parts, key lock, not pinned nor recessed). I shoot all of them a lot and in those ten years I have not had one issue with any of those things or anything else for that matter. They just work. Haters got to hate I guess, but my experience has been stellar! Happy birthday brother get yourself something nice.

.44 Mag. for your 44th birthday,you should go for it, that's my opinion. I would look at the S&W 69 .44 Mag..

And you'll get bored with them twice as fast. Reload those cases and you'll get plenty of use out of that .44, and god forbid you should have to shoot a bear with it it won't laugh at you.

I think you're on the right path. Makes a great way create a good memory for that year. Two years ago my employer gave me a Colt Govt. .45 to mark my 45th year of employment. Couldn't have made a better choice ( as far as I'm concerned ! ). As the years come and go, you'll find some great guns in your safe!
