When does it become a "Collection"?

To quote 1776:
"One useless man is disgrace. Two become a lawfirm... and Three or more become a Congress!"
Taking things in that context:
1 gun is a weapon. Two, gives you a backup... and three or more give you a Collection.

Or an Armory as the case may be. :D

I guess I have a collection. But I think the word conjures images of redundant rifles. If you have more than 3 .308 rifles, more than 5 1911s or more than 10 of any brand of rifle.

Also, lots of military stuff would make you a collector in my book.

I guess I have an "accumulation". However within that accumulation are two "collections": Smith wheelguns (a dozen or so) and old milsurp bolt rifles (nine).

YeP, with a type 03 (C&R) FFL, you are a bonafide collector :), else it's generally called an arsenal and the media will label you a wacko or nut.

I guess it depends on where you live. If you live in AZ, it would take 50 or more weapons. If you lived in Kali or say DC , I guess 2 would do.

So, I guess I don't have a collection.

Gee.. and here I thought when you had more than one it was a dangerous arsenal? At least that's what I read in the paper.

Guess it's been said before...

..,but I vote for "when you have guns you don't shoot much, if at all, and don't intend to .":scrutiny:

Here a safe, there a safe.....

and on and on. Mosins in one safe, USA in another safe, English, Swiss in another, domestic sporting arms in another. The French and Italian are just stacked in the closet because nobody will steal them. Yeah, I have a collection and an accumulation....chris3

It's an arsenal when people you know say that they will head to your house in a time of crisis.

I guess mines an arsenal. I've been told by several guns owning friends they're comming to me in a SHTF situtation.

A collection is also what I have. Atleast that's how I get new guns past the wife. Those old mil surp rifles at gun show are to hard to pass up.

In my opinion three or more guns that have something important in common can be called the "start of a collection." Positive examples:
- A Mauser G98, a Springfield 1903 and an SMLE - WW1 service rifles.
- An M1 Garand, a No.4 Mk.I and a K98 - WW2 service rifles
- A 1911, a P38 and a High Power - WW2 service pistols.
- A Glocks out of 26, 19, 17, 34 and 17L - 9mm Glocks.

Negative examples:
- A Swedish Mauser M96, an Enfield No.4 and an AR-15 - different countries, times and actions.
- A Luger 08, a BHP and an HK P7 - as above.

So my question to you folks with "real" collections: What information do you keep on

Bog babe, I like to keep track of SNs, amount paid for the gun, modifications and accessories.

Several good friends track rounds shot, but I'm just not that detail oriented.

My collection (such as it is) is currently based on two central themes:

(1) collecting an example of each basic action and selected calibers (for example, in rifles - bolt action, lever action, pump, semi-auto; 308, 227, 357, etc.)

(2) getting today what I probably won't be able to buy in California tomorrow.

Later on, I'll concentrate on weapons of a particular era, probably WWI.

Mostly for insurance purposes, I keep track of make, type, serial number, magazines and major accessories. I also make and keep digital pics of each.

It depends

It all depends on who is doing the defining. Ten guns to some could be called a collection, albeit a pretty small one. But get your ten gun collection depicted on the evening news and you have an 'arsenal' :banghead:

I don't count or put a label on my weapons. Every weapon I have bought I "needed" at the time. Liberals don't count or pay attention to the number of insults they speak, labels they apply to those they disagree with, or anti-constitutional laws they want to enact- I don't count or pay attention to the number of weapons I may need to protect my rights.

Cool thread,

Man, am I envious of you folks with over 50 weapons! My passions are too varied for such a er, collection. Jay Leno calls his 100+ vehicles a collection, but runs 'em all. I hope to continue to add weapons each year for fun, but wanted to begin with all the basics. A carry pistol, full size pistol, combat shotgun, combat carbine and long range rifle.

I'll call it a collection when I add five more for SAS competition, heh. But if I won the lottery, .22 - .50 of every kind, heh.

Its Not A Rule,Is More A Personal Point Of View. And Its Determined By The Owner If Is A Collection Or Whatever It Is.
