Thinking of getting a Daewoo, mostly because I admire the blend of AR-style ergonomics and a piston-based action. A few questions.

1) who has experience with these? I have heard good things, but am always looking for more input.

2) I don't want the thumbhole stock, but should I look for an ACE stock or an original folder?

3) How "handy" are they? I think a 16" AR without too much crap on it is pretty quick handling, but I haven't handled a Daewoo before.

4) Any experience with the picatinny scope mounts on these rifles? I hae seen two models, one that is raised, and one that mounts directly to the receiver, and I want to know if these are "shoot through" or not.

Thanks in adance.

I have a "pre-ban" K2 (side folder). Nothing has ever broken, but I replaced a hammer spring (same part as AR) b/c it was not tensioned enough for SA M193 surplus. Otherwise, it has never failed to function. It's as accurate as any non-accurized AR I've shot. Recoil impulse is different b/c it's not direct impingement.

Problems: spare parts are unobtainium, though I've bought parts over the internet auction sites. The platform stagnated largely b/c of the import ban, so that these guns never "evolved". Thus, they are not as readily adapted to all the latest whiz-bang accessories. If you're looking for a no-frills rifle, comparable to an A2, you'll like the Daewoo.

I have a coupla RR 16s, but the K2 is now the only semi I own in this caliber. It is the last semi I would part with, and would trust it to go bang more than anything else in my collection - including my HK91s.

I bought a mount.......can't remember the manufacturer.........but decided not to put it on. I think the mounts are still available, though.

Sam,

Does the factory folder lock up tightly? How is the trigger? Last, but most importantly, is the safety as instinctive to use and it looks?

I have a DR200 and have had no issues with it. It shoots good and seems to fit me very well. I agree with Hoggsen about the reliability and my main issue is not being able to get spare parts but so far that has not been an issue and I have not read much about anything breaking on these rifles.

Lock up of folder is like a vault. Zero movement. Trigger about like any stock Colt AR, no better or worse. I would assume that it could be improved by someone who knows how to improve an AR trigger. Safety works over a 180 deg arc, so is a little more travel vs an AR (90 deg). Even so, it is placed where it should be.

I had a preban K2 for a while, and really liked it.

Be aware that the rear of the receiver is different on the preban K2 rifles than the postban DR-200 rifles. The Ace stock will fit a postban gun, but you can't mount a preban Daewoo stock on a DR rifle.

The folding mechanism on the preban guns is built like a tank. No wobble whatsoever. It's probably a good deal stronger than a lot of fixed stocks. :)

The trigger on mine was very nice...as good as any good rifle trigger short of a professional trigger job.

I can't really comment on the handling, because when I had the Daewoo, I hadn't done much shooting with other similar rifles. I liked the feel of it, but can't give an objective comparison to anything else.

If I had kept it, my plan for spare parts was simply to buy a postban DR-200 to cannibalize.

I have a preban K2/AR 100 with the side folder stock. I looked at the thumbhole guns for awhile, but they were "clunky" at best, even with the mods, so I figured I'd either pass or hold out for a K2. I lucked into this one on consignment for $800 about a year ago and count myself lucky.

It's a great rifle. I'm also concerned about parts, so I'm trying to find bits and pieces here and then. If I can get a complete bolt, firing pin and cocking knob, I'll be happy. I understand that a complete AR fire control set will drop in to replace the originals if need be.

I saw a used DR200 at the gun show in Louisville today. It was in very good condition and the asking price was $675. Unfortunately, I don't have anything like that much cash right now :( so I could not even haggle with the guy. Maybe it will be there next time, when I will hopefully have more money saved.

I just bought a DR-200 last Friday. It's completely original from the thumb hole stock to the soldered on fake flash hider. I've only had a chance to put 60 rounds of WWB 55 grain ammo through it, but it performed flawlessly and seemed reasonably accurate. The first impression is it's not as accurate as my 20" AR HBAR, but it may be as accurate as my 16" M4gery.

I intend to have the fake hider removed and an A2 hider put on and I may wind up replacing the ugly thumb hole stock too. If there's even the slightest hint of another AWB I'll be on the phone to ACE ordering a folder for it.

It's an interesting concept, the best of both the AK and the AR without the negatives of either. Too bad parts are so scare, but I've heard that some places are making small runs of firing pins and some AR parts will fit. And of course the 1 in 12 twist makes it unsuitable for heavier bullets, but I do intend to try M855 (62 grain) in it and see if it will stabilize them.
