Forgive me for asking a question that is very basic. Since Wolf is so dirty and is not recommended by many, what's a good inexpensive alternative for my AR-15 and my AK-47?

I doubt that you will find any "inexpensive" ammo anymore. Prices have gone up substantially the past few months. Early last year I was able to get a case of Winchester USA223R3 for $229. Now the same case is $349. It's funny, I just purchased some Wolf ammo for plinking purposes. It isn't inexpensive anymore either. Running about $200/1000 locally.

I've heard good things about Silver Bear and Brown Bear (also Russian imports). The Wolf Gold stuff is also reported to be quite good, but I don't know if they make it in 7.62x39mm.

I don't really like the silver/brown bear stuff. It is covered in laquor and a pain the the A$$ to clean out of my AR, opposed to Wolf, which is now polymer coated I believe...But wolf was made for your AK-47 so shoot it up...

Sportsmans Guide has 720rds of brit surplus for about $150-160. I just bought a can of it 2 weeks ago, and it has rained EVERYDAY since then:banghead: . So I can't tell you how it does just yet.

Edit:
You may want to be careful with any steel case ammo in you AR. Some have had extractor ware with steel case ammo.

This is true, but if you are not wanting to reload, the money you will save buying wolf will allow you to buy a ton of extractors.

For the last couple of months I have been using brown bear in my sks, and it does fine. Standing behind a benchrest I was shooting 1 and a half inch groups at 100-125 yards. I also bought it for about $80/500 rounds, at a gun show.
