Ok my college campus does not allow firearms of any kind on it, no cc and no guns in the dorms. I have my Gerber folder and my surefire which i carry all the time. Does anyone have any good ideas for self-defense items?

Tazers are illegal entirely in states like MA. Pepper spray requires a Restricted FOID, only available to state residents. If you just attend college and maintain residence in another state, too bad. Not sure if any other states have their collective head jammed so far up their posterior.

Batons are illegal in a number of states. Lead-filled gloves are considered "brass knuckles" by the law in others.

Be sure to check your local laws to prevent being arrested for not being a helpless lamb. In those locales, the actual violent criminals get wristslaps and get released, while you would suffer harsh penalties.

Kimber is marketing a new product called Life Act (sp?). IIRC it is an OC type spray device. Haven't seen any reviews on it. May/may not be better than some Fox Labs OC.

You have a good knife and a small club. What else do you need more than 9,999 out of 10,000 times?

Maybe one of those lead-filled book weights?

blue help phones on campus and a rape whistle. ive been told for a few years now thats all I need. If you carry anything for self defense on a campus and get stopped theyll ask you, what crime were you going to commit with that, or who were you going to hit with that. I also would count on loosing whatever you were carrying. I am fairly bitter about this topic after having my favorite pocket knife stolen by the police here. Don't even think about those brass knuckle belt buckles either. The police love to get their hands on that stuff. Mace cant be that effective since ive noticed all the police are carrying those tasers now.Living off campus and taking your classes in the mornings are your best bet.

Get a technical looking backpack and a 4" locking D carbiner. Theres a reason guys here at MTU have a 'biner on the pack, and it ain't just for rappelling off the me-em, though that has been known to happen occasionally. Public safety sure does get pissed when you drop 400ft of rope on their heads.:neener:

Take up karate, or better yet, aikido or jiu-jitsu. Marvelously effective stuff, always with you, and the PD can't take it away from you.

Eric beat me to it- it's the blue phones.

Official policy for students.
“Possession of firearms or other weapons on university property contrary to law; possession or display of any firearm on university property frequented by the public, except, in the course of an authorized activity, possession of weapons in residence halls on university property in violation of residence hall rules; and intentional possession on university property of a dangerous article or substance as a potential weapon.”

It is so vague that it bans anything and everything. I like “potential weapon” the best. That could include letter openers. It is a complete joke. The college and university campuses are shining examples of the nanny state at work to make you safe from yourself.

This is simple.

1) Keep a bat and baseball glove in your dorm.
2) Get a 3"-4" folding pocket knife. Put it in your pocket.
3) Put a carabiner on your keychain, it is useful and will ALWAYS be with you.

I rock climb and also own this carabiner, which I am reccomending because it is light, big enough to get your hand in there (I'm 6' 4") and very strong.

It's only a matter of time before training in martial arts is banned too

in your doorm room

Nothing beats a good'ole louisville slugger:D

One of my favorites for improvised weapons is two socks (one inside the other) filled with change... to quote some one here "it ain't tacticool, but one good hit and its coloring books for X-Mass from now on"

I'd look for a mixed martial arts club at school.

The carabiner on the key chain is a good idea. Before it broke, I had a kubatan on my keys.

How about one of those metal combs that the barber has. After all its just a comb.Bring it accros the throat of a would be attacker im sure it would hurt like heck.

I carry a CRKT M16 on me all the time. Heck, I have pulled it out in front of some of public safety as they were trying to jump my truck to clean contacts.

They looked at me funny but didn't say anything about it so I guess it depends.
I say keep carrying the Knife. After all, It's better than nothing!

If you are looking into martial arts I recommend finding a place to get quality Judo lessons. It focuses on takedowns, chokes, control holds, and arm bars. It's perfect for self-defense.

I gave one of these "Wildkats" and a thing of pepper spray to my mother for Christmas. You can take the Wildcat with you anywhere. Get one in blue that way if someone ever questions you about it you can say that you are a Kentucky Wildcat fan and deny knowing it was a weapon.

Both of what you have

The knnife is good, depending on your training, and so is the flashlight. Many underestimate the dead blow potential of a aluminum flashlight in the hand! There are even Surefires that are purposely serated on the bezel for a more effective blow to the skull that can kill if well placed, If you train with the knife and light you may become quite letHAL to an attacker!

I sometimes keep an expandable baton with me.
A billy in CA, a felony just to have in the state, nevermined on college campuses.
I also have SAP gloves
A felony, called a blackjack or sap. Possession of a deadly weapon.

One of my favorites for improvised weapons is two socks (one inside the other) filled with change... to quote some one here "it ain't tacticool, but one good hit and its coloring books for X-Mass from now on"
Known as a sap, sandclub, sandbag, both felonies under possession of deadly weapon law in CA.
You can take the Wildcat with you anywhere.
Metal knuckles of any type are banned in CA and perhaps they would not be identified, but if caught they are specificly outlawed.
another billy, with no none weapon use banned as possession of a deadly weapon.
Here is one law in CA that covers all of those, though there are many additional weapons laws, particularly concering places of education, and specific types of weapons like knife variations, assault weapons, etc:

12020. (a) Any person in this state who does any of the following is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or in the state prison:
(1) Manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, or possesses any cane gun or wallet gun, any undetectable firearm, any firearm which is not immediately recognizable as a firearm, any camouflaging firearm container, any ammunition which contains or consists of any flechette dart, any bullet containing or carrying an explosive agent, any ballistic knife, any multiburst trigger activator, any nunchaku, any short-barreled shotgun, any short-barreled rifle, any metal knuckles, any belt buckle knife, any leaded cane, any zip gun, any shuriken, any unconventional pistol, any lipstick case knife, any cane sword, any shobi-zue, any air gauge knife, any writing pen knife, any metal military practice handgrenade or metal replica handgrenade, or any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, slungshot, billy, sandclub, sap, or sandbag.
(2) Commencing January 1, 2000, manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, or lends, any large-capacity magazine.
(3) Carries concealed upon his or her person any explosive substance, other than fixed ammunition.
(4) Carries concealed upon his or her person any dirk or dagger.

Many things like "leaded cane" apply to anything with intentionaly increased weight, lead or other substance. Things like "billy" apply to any blunt weapon without a legit non weapon use that warrants you having it. Sap and sandbag can include anything, even a purse used as a weapon if filled with heavy objects, nevermined an object intentionaly made for the purpose.
Also most objects if intended for use as a weapon fall into one of these catagories if you are asked it's purpose and reply that it is "for self defense". That implies intent and makes it a weapon. A baseball bat for example if kept for self defense would be a "billy" while having it around because you use it for recreation on occasion does not make it a billy.

Now we gotta make the best of it, improvise, adapt to the environment, Darwin, s*** happens, I Ching, whatever man, we gotta roll with it.
:D

Are you thirsty in between classes? What could be more natural and refreshing than a 16oz  monster energy drink in a sturdy drink holder like this:

Maybe make a really rugged one or find something milsurp that will hold up to the rigors of college life quite well.

Security concerns too. Got a locker? You should probably have a padlock on it if you don't already. In fact, you might want a spare for your bike/laptop/room/etc.

Just get a bat, knife and a carabiner.

Martial arts is great, but that is a long term commitment.

I specifically do not recommend Judo as a self defense art. In the USA, it is a sport. I have studied Judo for over 15 years, have 2nd degree BB and competed in approximate 100matches while in college. Judo needs mixed martial arts cross-training to be useful in the street.

In fact, any traditional martial art needs serious dedication over time before they become useful. Do not expect any martial arts training to become useful the first year or so.

Seems like blade & light are a good combo. Spend some money on a 1-2 day knife SD seminar in your area.
