I was just wondering what the thoughts of other college students or anyone was about protecting yourself in a place where you can't carry a firearm. I am not 21 yet but as of now I carry a Gerber Spring assist knife and a small mace spray can with me. I also usually have a nalgene water bottle with me most of the time.

I guess I'm just wondering what other college students do for protection or if I'm crazy for carrying all this stuff on me most of the time!

In addition to what you describe I've learned about the following tools which I have used in this situation:

Flashlight
Koppo Stick (improvised and proper)
Impact Kerambit
Comtech Stinger

Do the best you can on parking so you don't have to walk so far (yeah right I know), stay in well lit areas, use situational awareness, stay in condition yellow. Travel in packs whenever possible.

How big is the flashlight you carry? Usually I like to carry things in between my jeans and my body usually hanging them on a heavy belt. I'm guessing it's something like a medium sized maglite?

Unfortunately depending upon where you live, even a knife (including a pocketknife) or pepper spray can be illegal on college grounds.

Furthermore, many universities have rules beyond that of what is legally regulated. So even if it's legal, you can still be expelled. Check your univerity's rules and local laws.

note: this is usually the case with private colleges.

I went to USC (South Carolina, the REAL USC)...

Seeing how we have a bunch of good ol' boys and rednecks and such, just about everyone there carries a pocketknife. So it's just kinda ignored.

Hope you go to a school like that.

Same thing here in Louisiana, even some of the ladies can be seen with a knife pocket of their skin tight jeans :p gosh I'm going to miss college in 2 months.

Anyway, anything that you can carry legally will work.

I have a:
nice sized spyderco
Small flashlight
my brain

Most of the time the above 3 will be all you need.

A while back we had an experience with 3 punks from another college down the road coming rob people at knife point, for then I was packing one of those expandable batton things.

Here in CA, guns are a no no on campus. Not too sure about knives, but my wife won't carry one for SD anyway. She does carry a can of Fox labs pepper spray though.

In college I had a folding knife round at all times. I went to school in central PA (c'mon, guess :D ) and as lefty as the place was, nobody looked twice.

Mace was 'allowed' as were whistles. I had to leave my hunting rifle with Central Command, but they let me keep my (camillus, marine combat) hunting knife.

My roomie, though not really "on board' himself, managed to snag a broomstick for me, which we cut down to about three feet long. That, a baton and a maglite were my faithful dorm defenders.

Need help fabricating stuff? talk to the architecture or art kids - they have tools, or usually know where to find some.

But the best defense of all is to travel in packs. I, wiseguy I am, managed to befriend a whole little clique of attractive college type lady-types... innumerable were the nights I got fed a warm meal (or dinner, or a hug) for walking someone home. I and the other guys watched out for each other too.

Brain. Good judgement will keep you out of 99.99999% of all college "danger" situations. I'm not saying don't have fun, don't go to parties/bars/etc., but just use your noggin and evaluate each situation.

I always carried a Kershaw Leak assisted opening knife. Also, I usually had some large Poli Sci or history book around.... I thought if someone tried to attack me, I'd whip that book out and.... read it to them till they fell asleep.... :(

Traveling in groups is a good idea also. My last quarter on campus we had several attacks on young ladies after dark. So, I would go to a party and end up walking 2 or 3 girls back to their residences.. Walk one home, go back to party and repeat.. Yes, it was a good way to meet ladies..

This was just a couple years ago..

I used to carry a folding knife with me all the time on my college campus. However I highly advise that you leave it at home if you plan on doing any drinking. In an intoxicated state at a bar one night I decided to discourage a gentleman from starting a fight with me by pulling that knife out. He quickly walked off and I put the knife back and nothing happened. The next day I realized how many horrible ways that situation could have ended. It also made me profoundly re-examine my lifestyle at the time.

Bingo. I saw lot of fights and attacks during college, but they were all out at parties or bars, or at 3 AM. If its 3 AM and you're walking down a dark street on a college campus, you have a good chance of getting antagonized or jumped. You have to read the situation, read who is around you, walk with buddies you know who have your back, and avoid getting drawn into stupid verbal arguments with the local toughs. That is 99 percent of it.

I really wouldn't suggest anyone walk around a college campus with a knife and a gung-ho defensive mindset like you would in the inner city. If you get jumped by Billy the Frat Boy on Greek row, and you stab him, guess what- you're not only kicked out of school but you're facing manslaughter.

How many of you responding are ladies? Obviously guys are going to "feel" safer even if they don't have guns.

I have 2 college age girls and am fuming about colleges being statistically very dangerous for young women and the college elites not allowing their young ladies to protect themselves from the rapists who don't care about the "No guns allowed" signs :banghead: :fire: :barf: :cuss:

HEY! Why you little..... :D

Getting my graduate degree, I lived in "Graduate Student Housing" and violated "dorm" regulations by having a revolver in the dorm room. I figured I'd rather be "alive and expelled" than "dead and currently enrolled." (I could always go to one of the other universities that had accepted me into their PhD program). This was before CCW permits, though, so it stayed in the dorm room. And even though I now have a CCW, I don't carry on campus. Getting into another PhD program would have been easy. Getting another job isn't so easy.

I almost always have a folding knife on me, either a cheap Gerber Para frame or a Kershaw Ken Onion blackout. I'd like to get a nicer one, but I'll probably wait as I'm about to graduate anyways. Campus police are incredibly laid back, they watch kids smoke out and don't say much, so I doubt they have a problem with folding knives. Not sure what they'd say about an automatic though.

Personally, I don't even feel the need for the knife. I'm at a little hippie school (you should see their faces when they find out I'm gunowner  ) so I'm larger (the gym is used by maybe 10% of the school) than 99% of the people there, and most couldn't fight there way out of a paper bag anyways. No frats, and they mostly get stoned, not drunk and rowdy. Kind of a strange place, has a bubble that protects it from the outside world (i.e. the conservatives!). :neener: When I went to a larger state university I always had a folder on me.

For the real world, I always have a folder on me and I'm a big fan of jiu-jitsu. :D

Big +1 to use your brain!!!

Don't go to stupid places to do stupid things with stupid people (that may be kind of hard considering it is college:rolleyes: )

You may be able to get away with carrying knives of various lengths on campus; just be carefull about who sees them. For example, I once scared some physics lab partners by producing a small SAK to cut an obnicious piece of electral tape. They did not notice the locking knife clipped to my RFP.

However, in an Agruculturial class, I had a TA produce a 6" fixed blade knife from her purse to cut a soil sample. Nobody batted an eye.:D

Also, lood at some cannisters of mace. Carry them IN YOUR HAND at night.

i'm a grad student.

I carry a 3" benchmade folder, but honestly, it's a talisman.

If you pull a knife on someone, and they are skilled with a knife and pull one back, you're screwed.

I have a CCW, which I use when I'm away from campus but on campus, possession of guns is verboten... but considering I live in the middle of nowhere I've never felt remotely unsafe.

I consider myself to be decently trained with a knife. My thought has always been inflict the least amount of damage and run quick. I'm starting to not be a confrontational little twit anymore so that helps.

I'm also carrying mace with me now on top of a 1000ml nalgene and knife. I think I Would rather prefer to hit them with the mace if I Can reach it in time, if not I'm always carrying my water bottle.

*WHACK* Not much is going to be standing after that!

anyhow, Keep them coming. I'm interested in what other college students do and I'm sure they are too!

For evening and night time I would recommend a small Xenon flashlight in the 60 -120 lumen range such as Surefire and Streamlight. I think Surefire has a high impact plastic version of their 2 x CR123 light that can take the 60 lumen or 120 lumen bulb for about $35.

I have a similar one from S&W that is rated at about 80 lumen. I tried it out on myself at arms length and wow! I was blinded for about a minute. Just a big black spot in from of me.

The best advice is to avoid getting into a compromised situation to begin with.

* If you go to a bar, don't drink yourself blind and don't depend on someone getting you home. Have 2-3 drinks, eat something and have some coffee before walking back. Make sure you are alert and able to react and be observant. knocking off drunks stumbling out of bars is probablyone of the easiest htis a thug can make.

* Don't walk through deserted areas of campus. Take a longer route if necessary if it means staying in a more public space.

* Looking obviously aware (not distracted by a book, video game, or drunk) and ready to act is one of the best deterrents unless a small gang is waiting to harass passersby. In that case you should see them early enough to detour.

* If confronted hit them in the eyes with your Xenon light to disorient them and have the spray ready to go.

* The light and spray should be used to delay and disorient them giving you time to beat an exit or detour. You have no idea what weapons they might have or how many backup buddies they have nearby. Don't engage on the place and timing of their choice. Get out of there.

The best thing is to be at a campus with less risk. The big state universities probably have the biggest risk. Anonymity, much more land to patrol, and less choosy about the characters they accept.

My two daughters made it safely through college. One attended a small private Christian college in British Columbia and the other a small private military college in Vermont. Both exercised good practices of walking with friends almost all the time, generally not getting wasted at the local bars and stumbling home. They also had pepper spray and good flashlights although they never had even close to a need to use them (except for aggressive geese which she didn't use it for).

The military academy has a lot of shooting enthusiasts and reserve or even active duty troops, so even though the policy is no firearms on campus they would do any THR gathering proud. Every cadet has a an M14 in their room. Yes, it is without a firing pin, but still pretty cool. Many of the upperclassmen have handguns and even AR15, sniper rifles (their job in the service), etc. in their trunks. They are also a very tight knit group so if one was attacked, especially one of the females there would be hell to pay. It would be very difficult to intrude on the campus and not be noticed.

Anyway, the best protection is prevention. Avoid compromising situations, stay alert and have a light, spray and maybe a ASP baton ready for use.

For the dorm room I would seriously consider having a locking footlocker with a firearm (you could probably get away with bolting it to the wall or floor in the closet). If you have a roommate, even if they are shooters, I would not tell them about having a firearm. You never know when a relative stranger may get in a tiff with you and turn you in. Just tell them you keep your electronics in there, or a delicate musical instrument or something. Or you're holding onto your dead aunt's fine china. :) Being at college during a major disaster and/or civil unrest would not be good unarmed. You are at your most vulnerable at school and you spend most of the year there.

I'm a student at Ohio State, male.

Big can of mace in the jacket pocket

I will drive from, my apartment to the krogers a block or so away late at night, rather than walk by myself. Same went for the nights I worked on campus. Doable walk from the apartment to work, but late at night I walked to the bus stop, rode that down High, then walked the block or two to the apartment.

Anything you can do to not make yourself a target, the better. I try not to carry cash on me, and opt for my bank card usually. When I need to visit an ATM, I go to the one near my other job that has at least one or two state highway troopers 20-25 feet away, indoors.

Big thing is keeping alert, watching your surroundings and being smart.

I'm a college student too. I carry a one-hand-opening knife. Mostly just for utility but self defense too.
I've thought about picking up a can of mace. The range I visit in PA sells the big bottles the police carry.

Just carry a rifle on your back all day. When someone asks tell them that you are in a performing arts piece about "gun violence and why America is so bad. " Not only will college people love you, but they wont think twice of it. Mainly because they are all idiots.

At college in an urban environment, I carry a CRKT m14z model folding knife. I have been known to carry a metal kubotan as well.

While carrying a knife may not be illegal in your state, it may be against school policy. YES YES, I Know that it shouldnt matter and that rules banning weapons for protection are assanine. Im just stating the fact so you dont get in any hot water. CYA (cover yer ass) lol

Here at my school ( the great Michigan Tech ) I've never felt unsafe even during my 2:00 am strolls through campus to the computer labs. However, I'm always uneasy walking around at night so I keep a Gerber para-frame on my belt along with my mini-Mag w/ LED conversion. Its enough for me to feel more at ease, though most of my friends ask why I'm always so on edge; always looking around and paying more attention to my surroundings than their conversations.

I do own a handgun, and would carry were I legally allowed to. But as an Illinois resident in the state of MI, I can't. CCW is illegal during normal class hours on campus, but in the middle of the night it is more or less accepted by Public Safety.
