Impulse buy today, my first SiG ever and my first '07 purchase. Factory refurb, 2x8-rd mags, 1x7-rd, two sets of grips, case, full factory warranty. Have to wait 5 days instead of 3 because of work...

Quick Q's:
1. What works best (target/HD usage): 185, 200, 230 grain? Steady diet of +p OK or just occasionally?
2. Why 7 and 8 round mags? Is there a difference in length? Factory 10-round is available - this is NOT a carry piece so I may get a couple.
3. Planning ahead: SiGitis is supposed to be only cured by a cashoscopy from the wallet...P225 is compact and P228 is full-size, or is it the other way around? They had CPO P225...didn't see CPO P228 but I could ask if they're available.

I don't have next week's work schedule finalized yet, but I plan on a Tuesday pickup/range session with it, plus I really need to try out my G20 and 92FS .22LR conversions. I've had them for a month and I can hear them crying out at night now...

Dont have an answer for the first two, but as for 3... 225 and 228 are both compact.

I recently bought a 225 (P6) and I cannot love it any more. Well, actually I am waiting for it's return from Sig as I sent it in for the SSP and a slide nitron, so I will love it even more. This is my first Sig as well, and I will tell you, it will not be my last by a long shot. I love my USP, but there's just something about these Sigs.

I rented a 228 at the range, and I am in love with that gun too. My poor wallet!

Congrats on that 220!

p225/226 are full-sized
p228/229 are compact
p239 even smaller

I don't have a P220, but for my 1911 I just use 230gr FMJ at the range - Winchester, Remington, Sellier & Bellot et al..

I shoot a lot of 200 gr LSWC from Precision Bullets or Oregon Laser Cast. Also 230 gr RN from both. Also shoot some Hornady XTP which I use for home defense/carry ammo. Not sure why you would want to shoot a lot of +P.

Stick with 230gr WWB

I own a P220ST and has never had an issue with 230gr ball ammo. IIRC 185gr is more expensive no?

Anyway congrats on the P220. Its trully a work of functional art and a joy to shoot!

ahhh Sigs

the 225 is a single stack 9mm (if I am not mistaken)
the 228/229 is a mid size. Short barrel and slide but almost full frame. The 228 has a spamped slide, the 229 a machined slide.

Aim had some 225 German police trade-ins for $369.00

Although not a Sig, I've been shooting a lot of Blazer Brass 230gr FMJ out of my Kimber. It's hard to beat at under $9.00 a box. And it's brass cased. I hated the aluminum.

1. Most any standard .45 ACP will do ok, there might be one or another bullet weight that would shoot closest to the sights. Not all P220s will handle semiwadcutters. My first one would not, I don't ask the present one to try so as to not hurt my confidence in it. It is 100% with RN, JHP, or FP bullets. Unless the all-steel ST version, you might find +P loads too much of a good thing for YOU. The gun will handle any reasonable amount.

2. Like 1911, 7-round magazines are basic, the 8s play tricks with follower and spring to squeeze an extra shot into the same tube. I have no experience with factory 8s but the Pro-Mag version ain't much punkin.

3. Other models:
P220 is the original single stack full size. 9mm, .38 Super, .45ACP
P226 is the double column full size brought out for US military trials vs Beretta. 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 SIG
P225* is the single stack compact originating as the P6 to German police specifications. 9mm
P228* is the P225 slide on a short double column frame. 9mm
P229 is the P228 frame with a heavy milled slide to handle .40 cal. 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 SIG
P239 is an even more compact single stack gun. 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 SIG

* Models not in regular commercial channels right now. Still findable but not as common as others.

I reload my ammo..... and my P220C loves the 200gr flat nose bullets I load over W231. For CCW I load it with Hornady TAP 200gr +P. The gun shoots those real well too. Kinda of a big gun for CCW.... but they are ACCURATE!

Like my P220 also, may be the most accurate pistol I own. Mine has a tight chamber and only likes 230 grain round nose or the long nose 200 grain semi wadcutters. More importantly it likes an OAL of 1.250 max and I have learned to use a Lee factory crimp die for reliable feeding.

my p220 fires every time all of the time. very reliable and very accurate. wish i could find a single action sig, (don't know if it's still called a p220) at a real world price. for a .45 it's very soft in the recoil department too.

I've been thinking of getting a 220 as well. Does anyone here know anything about the factory refurbished guns? How do they compare wth new ones?

Often I see dinged up used 220/s with nite sites that don't glow any more. How much should I pay for one?

You can get a CPO P220 anywhere from ~$525 (Summit Gun Broker, add in a bit more for shipping and transfer - you might be able to find a similar price at a gun show) up to $700 (local price for a P220ST).

For a dinged-up P220, somewhere under $500, definitely.

Not sure why you would want to shoot a lot of +P.

Because I have a bunch of 200gr/8.0gr Power Pistol +p loads (8.2 is MAX). There's also some 230gr loaded with Titegroup but I'll have to check my notes...standard not +p for sure.

Sistema and Ballester-Molina get 230 standard, 200+p is for my P97DC. I do have/use the Lee 4-die set, Factory Crimp Die is great!

wish i could find a single action sig

Is that the 210?

I hear ya on the wait. After much deliberation (and questions here) I bought a 220 carry two-tone with nites from GB.com just last night. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I had a 220 several years ago, and loved it, but had to sell for financial reasons :( Wont ever do that again.

Congrats on the P220! :D IMHO - the best .45 you can own.
The P225 and P228 are compacts. +Ps wont hurt - its a tank, but why subject yourself and your 220 to the punishment?

If you buy one of these - send it to Sig and get the SSP service done to it. It's a good deal that comes with new night sites plus springs and more. Check it out on www.sigarms.com
Just figure on the $99. on top of what you want to pay.

SIG's classic P-series pistols work for just a'bout any application that you
want too use it for, bar none~! The older, West German SIG-SAUER P228's
are highly sought after by SIG collector's; having been shipped with twin
13 round magazines from West Germany. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm hear
to tell you that SIG's are known "to shoot lights out", straight from the
box~! I've not seen a more accurate handgun from any manufactuer than
SIG's Classic P-series pistols; such as the famed P-210 from Switzerland,
or the West German P220, P225, P226, P228, P230.

Some say, the American produced (partially, anyway) SIGARMS P229
in 9m/m, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG are just as good; but my personal
experience with a NIB SIGARMS .40 caliber P229 was less than all of
the hoopla indicated. I returned to my old duty weapon [the .45 ACP
West German SIG-SAUER P220A], and the problem was solved.;) :D

As with any standard (DA/SA) Sig pistol, insure that you ONLY use the de-cocking lever to lower the hammer. To manually lower the hammer can set the stage for a pistol that fires when dropped. The 220 seems to be a more persistent offender in this regard.
