As often noted, many fence-sitters who supposedly "support" an assault weapon ban do not understand (or even really care) that "assault weapon" is a made-up term. They don't understand that the ban has nothing to do with fully automatic assault rifles, machine guns, sub machine guns, etc. They just think the ban is keeping fully-automatic weapons out of the hands of gangs, terrorists and those evil German-sounding guys who shoot at Bruce Willis in the Die Hard movies.

Just like a vaccine introduces a little bit of a disease to make your body develop its own immunity, a little bit of exposure to guns and shooting can go a long way to help people create their own informed opinions.

So...let's all take a non-gun person out shooting as often as possible to help them make up their own mind. A little shooting vaccine now can stop the AWB Part Deaux pandemic that's coming.

Take a non-shooter out shooting.

Absolutely!

Just too my (increasingly lefty, DNC volunteering) mother out for some time with an AR-15. She's getting an SKS for her farm, and looking forward to playing with an AK. :)

There ya go, a perfect reason to re implement the draft. Just think two months or so of person attention relating to personal responsibility. :D Oh yeah and firearms training to boot.

To me it is more about politicians controlling the people than it an AWB. If we get the word out that it is more Americans freedoms being taken away, and it is not really about guns, we might get more fence sitters joining in on the battle.

Powerful Medicine?

As I mentioned elsewhere, perhaps the "powerful medicine" we need is a website with the name recognition and clout of a MoveOn.org, something like MoveOver.org, or BackUp.org, or BackToBasics.com...maybe YourRights.edu! We can use the internet to derail any AWB, and we could probably have one hell of an impact on the 2008 elections if we use the anger from this Zumbo divide-the-faithful assault :cuss: as the incubator for a new political consciousness in the 2A community. All those gun owners who don't belong to the NRA might come to a website that reflected their beliefs and vote with their keyboards. If there are ~ 80 million gun owners, and only ~ 4million belong to the NRA, well, you do the math....

The first thing I recommend is quit using the term "Asssault Weapon". They are NOT "Assault Weapons" -- they are "modern rifles", aka "common household firearms".

GPR = General Purpose Rifle

I always get a little testy when people try to mis-characterize my general purpose rifles.

What kind of socialist control freak presumes to tell me I have to commit assault with my favorite rifle?

You psycho-socialist wacko self-inflating windbags can just piss off with that thinking.

I'll be damned if I'll let myself be coerced into turning my general purpose rifles into instruments of assault.

Go sell crazy elsewhere.

Yes, I understand that the psycho-socialist "just knows" that everyone wants to kill them (why would you think that, hmmm?) but us SANE folk have better things to do with our time and our ammo.

Assault, indeed.

Morons.

How about "JustLeaveMeAlone.org"?

Had some college age tenants some time ago. Boyfriend and I ended up being buddies, and went hunting a time or two. The girl rolled her eyes, but agreed to go to the range with us one afternoon.

What to bring, hundred # girl, doesn't like guns... esp scary ones.

AR, AK, P229, and a .22.

After 30 minutes, Boyfriend and I were loading 30 rounders. She was unloading them, handing the empty rifle back and asking " what one is loaded now?"

I'm not sure whose smile was bigger, hers or mine. Best 250 rounds I ever bought.

She now lives in NYC, but she has some experience that most folks there will never have, and can intelligently debate the subject. <pats self on back/>

Take someone shooting - even if it is the guy down the block with the .30-30 or the skeet gun. And don't fart around trying to get fancy and rename stuff. Trying to explain definitions never works, because you are always going to get "Oh, you mean an assault rifle. Oh."

I would guess that the bayonet attachment on the end of a No.1 MkIII SMLE would make it, by definition of the Brady Bunch, one of those incorrectly termed "Assault" rifles?!?!

Framing

In his article (mentioned in another thread) Bill King stressed "assault weapons" and I responded:

«Let's see, do you think pretty much anyone who wants an assault weapon should have one, or do you think that's something that should be limited to law enforcement agencies and the military?»

»» Why on Earth would a free people want to disarm themselves while their police and military carry machine guns? What idiot, after watching decades of genocides, would propose that??

»» Stupid man. "Assault weapon?" You think we're going to fall for this fallacious term a second time?

Every time someone throws that term at me, I reframe it for them as a "fallacious term" along with questions of the "who are you trying to fool?" and "why would I fall for that again?" kind.

I begin with the presumption that if you can't frame the debate honestly to begin with, I won't dignify it with discussion.
