I have a couple of 1911 .45's - a full size version and a Colt Defender. The Defender is nice for carry, accurate, a bit nasty to practice with but doesn't seem to have the same reliability as the full size model.

So, being a G19 owner, I was looking around at a similiar sized / capacity .45 and checked out the G36. Trouble is, some of what I've read indicates THAT model doesn't have the stock "always-goes-bang" Glock reputation.

Or was that when it was first brought out a couple years ago? Have things been tweaked out by now so that its OOB reliability is rock solid?

Any comments?

Even tho I sold my 36, reliability was not a contributing factor...I just couldn't get use to the short grip.

Mine has been 100% reliable. I know that some have had problems with their 36's - seems like you either get a a great one, or one that needs a trip to Glock to get it running perfect...

Mine has been 100%! I would suggest getting the pearce +0 extensions. It will save your pinky fingure from becomeing a giant blood blister, and it will help keep a good grip on the gun!

Ah, those are YOUR series of photos... what's your sn on gt? I love the one where it's laying on it's side (viewed from the top of the slide), so you can see the unique shape of the 36 relative to other GLOCKS, even their other subcompacts. Flush all the way down, no frame swell or ridge at the slide-frame seam.

It's the sleekest, lightest, most "Kahr-like" GLOCK; and apparently in more ways than shape alone- though mine has been absolutely flawless in a couple thousand rounds. You see aloooot of bitching about them on the interweb, so I won't try to claim where there's smoke there's not fire. But I would recommend every time based on the positive experience with mine.

Not a single problem in 500+ rounds with mine. Its my daily carry with 230gr GD's.

I did have a few problems with mine in the first 200 rds or so. I traced it to one certain mag. It would FTE on the second round of that mag almost every time. Took that mag out of rotation, and put another 250 through it with zero problems. It feeds all kinds of HP and FMJ that I've tried. I picked up several more new mags, and CDNN has (or had) factory Glock demo mags for $9.99. They look and work as new. I put a +1 Pearce extension on one, and a couple of +0 extensions on two others, and they all work fine. The extensions are nice during extended range practice.

I also put Truglo TFO nightsights on it and I shoot much better with it now. I'd recommend them.

<Copied from a post I made elsewhere...>

The G36 is an engineering tradeoff. A .45 ACP in a small compact package, with a pretty powerful recoil spring to compensate for the short slide travel, and a lightweight body.

As you know, the brass from round you just fired is ejected as the slide moves backward as a result of the energy and expanding gasses. On the little G36 there isn't much room or tolerance for error during this process. I suspect some people with problems should try replacing their recoil spring. Many people blame problems on the gun, while others blame the shooter.

Certainly ANY Glock is subject to the "Limp Wrist" FTEs. The G36 is the poster child for this.

Personally, I have NO problems with my G36. I think it's a great gun. There are many others with the same opinion as me. There are also many who have had bad experiences and will tell you to stay away from this satanic spawn of Glock.

You'll likely have to judge for yourself.

Stay safe,
ChickenHawk

My G36 was problematic, and not just an occasional FTF or FTE. It self dissasembled when the recoil spring assembly broke apart during fire. This was on the first range trip with less than 100 rounds through it.

This was over 4 years ago, so I can't comment on the new ones. I'm no Glock basher, but that's my experience with the G36. I know there are great ones out there too.

Mine was accurate, but would FTE (stovepipe) unless you held it with a death grip. This happened to everyone that shot it during the time I had it. +1 Extensions turned mine into a jammo-matic without extra power springs.

Traded it to someone who was willing to deal with it.
