I'm on vacation, so I don't have access to my collection. But if I remember correctly if you look at the threads, on a new barrel (over 855,000) there is a lip at the very end. The old barrels do not have that lip.
You can still find barrels with fixed chokes and screw in chokes, try Gun Digest (formerly Gun List) look under the barrel listing. The barrel with screw in chokes run about $200. (the chokes are the same as Win Chokes, on the 12 ga guns, True chokes on the 20 ga ).
Watch out for cut off barrels, the are a lot of them around.
If you think you have the correct barrel for your gun and you can't get it started on the receiver, try loosening the yoke (the horseshoe bracket that is attached to the magazine tube) then try it. Make sure when you tighten the screw on the yoke again that you leave a equal space on each side of the barrel.
I have some spare barrels, new style, that fit loose, even one that spins 360, and it shoots just fine.
With the Deerslayer I found that standard Win slugs give the best groupes, what are you using?
