I was in the market for a traditional bowie knife and low and behold I found a Winchester model 94 commemorative on sale for $20, regularly $80 at big five. Laminate rosewood handle, stainless blade, brass rivets and hand guard. I told myself I would never buy a knife without knowing the exact steel it was made of, as well as the heat treatment. Except for the butt of the handle, it looks to be full tang. I searched and searched and could not find the steel make anywhere.

I realize it has no practical utility, but I was just in the mood for a fighting knife.
How’d I do?

If you're happy with it, it's not my place to criticize, but you should consider it to be a display piece instead of a using knife.

"Surgical Stainless" is almost always used when a 420J, or similar pretty but soft, "stainless" steel is used. If the knife was made in China it's unlikely that there is any heat treat that was performed.
