I'm new to rifles, and I'd like to pick up something that has a bit of nostalgia factor to it.

So, I'm thinking I want a used m1 Garand. The ones with the strip clips....boom boom boom, clank!

Anyone know where i can find a used Garand, in decent enough condition to last a while? I don't think I've ever even seen one in person.

Thanks!

No, it's boom boom boom, ping!

CMP would be the best place if they weren't sold out of them until at least September.

You definitely don't want one that goes "boom boom boom, clank"!

You want one that goes "boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom, ping".

:neener:

As to the question, check the classifieds sections of this forum, FALfiles.com, and AR15.com. I see them pop up every once in a while.

8 booms and a ping--good times at the range.

I've heard decent things about the http://www.garandguy.com/. I've never ordered anything from him, both of mine are from CMP.

Keep looking at the gun shows/classifieds. There are a few people out there who don't shoot that "dusty old rifle in the closet" anymore. Saw a beautiful original condition Springer carried into a gun show recently---after talking to the seller, I hope he carried it back home with him(seemed like a good man).

I was in the gun shop the other day getting pricing on a Tikka T3 Tactical and this guy walked in with a Navy M1 in VG condition asking if they were interested. The store clerk offered him $200 and had a deal. I tried to buy it but he kept it for himself. I kept chewing on it for several days.

Is the only manufacturer Springfield?
What should I look for or avoid in buying a used Garand?

That's a crying shame. Gun shop just robbed that man.:(

They sure did and it left me wondering if I could've lived with myself if I had bought the rifle from them. Maybe it's just as well that I didn't get it.

For the CMP you can just join the Garand Collectors Association (its about $20)that counts, then you need a firearms license or training or proof of competition

Go see Tony, AKA: the Garand Guy. He's a straight up guy that will bend over backwards to make sure you are a happy Garand owner. He just installed a Citadel barrel on my Garand and even offered to park it for free. Since I didn't ship all the parts I sent it to Springfield to get it parked.
Be careful were you buy one. A lot of rewelds and guns built from out of spec parts are on the market. I would only buy from a reputable dealer or the CMP. Garand Guy, Orion 7, Deans Gun Restorations, Fulton are just a few off the top of my head.

You could find a really nice post-Korean Springfield in my safe.
Good luck getting past the dogs! :D

If you have a CCW, that counts as your 'proof of marksmanship activity'. So does any record of military or LEO service.
