KINGSTOWN, N.C. --A 5-year-old boy grabbed a rabid fox by the neck and pinned it to the ground during a family cookout, protecting six other children before his stepfather could kill the animal.

"I wanted to protect my little brother," said Rayshun McDowell, who battled the fox in the front yard of his home Sunday in Kingstown, a town about 50 miles west of Charlotte.

The fox bit Rayshun in the leg, but the 61-pound-boy held the animal down for more than a minute. Animal control officials said Tuesday that test results confirmed the fox had rabies, which is fatal unless treated before symptoms appear. Rayshun is undergoing treatment.

"I looked out the window and Rayshun had the fox by the neck and was pushing it into the ground," said his mother, Shinda Linder. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing."

Rayshun's stepfather, Ryan Thompson, pulled the boy off the animal and kicked it. A neighbor fired a handgun three times but the fox continued to advance.

Thompson, wearing a cast because of a broken leg, said he used a stick and his crutch to beat the fox to death.

Rayshun, meanwhile, asked only for a Band-Aid and didn't complain of any pain.

"Rayshun was really calm and wasn't upset," his mother said. "I couldn't believe he would do something like that. He was so brave, and I was a wreck."

Rabies attacks the nervous system and is transmitted through saliva. It often makes animals aggressive. A 6-year-old girl who was attacked by a fox the same day at her home nearby also is being treated.

Luckily rabies is treatable if they catch it soon enough, but still pretty scary. I wonder why they beat it to death if the neighbor had a handgun?

Awesome!

After the guy strangled a rabid bobcat to death two weeks ago and now this kid holding down a rabid fox, the SE US has some tough dudes.

Metrosexuals be damned...the real male survives.

Well

I live in the city, but sorta the country. Technically I am within city limits, but on the river with alot of woods. Alot of times in the evening I sit on the back porch and listen to music and smoke. A few weeks ago, a very BIG dog snuck up on me and just stood there, 2 arms lengths away from me. I looked up and was SHOCKED, not expecting to see a big black dog. I jumped up and hollered pretty loud, scaring the dog away. I was unarmed, if you don't count a 7 inch CS blade at my feet. From now on, I sit on the back porch with my CZ, hoping the next dog I encounter in the evening is only lost and not foaming at the mouth. I figure it's best to have it in reach instead of get bit by a dog/critter with rabies.

other day the children[21 and 32] came out of the basement saying, daddy something is in the basement! so we go down, and bats make a little clicking noise. so we sat him in a bush. then i look up rabid bats on the net, and it sez: if you find a bat in broad daylight,in a place where you would not expect to find one[like your basement room] and fairly approachable, then most probably the bat is indeed rabid. so i go look for him,and he is gone, but now there is the feral cat and her kitten.speying and neutering your pets certainly had a new meaning. i won't go on for ever, because there is plenty of rabies sites.

Local paper in NC where I lived a few years ago had one of the best pro gun bits I have seen. Little old lady was pictured holding a scoped varmint rifle. Story stated that she had to have that gun, because rabies was rampant there, and the game and fish folks would not even go out on "rabid animal" calls anymore. She said that without her rifle, her home would be uninhabitable.

"Country Folks Will Survive," as Hank Jr. says.

<<I wonder why they beat it to death if the neighbor had a handgun? >>

Maybe, they were taking some poor ill advice from PETA.
Beat it…to make it run away?, and not kill it? Or to save the fur? For donating to PETA? Without putting holes in the animal?

Old animal furs can be donated:

http://www.furisdead.com/donate.asp

Your old furs could save an animal's life—and gain you a tax deduction!
Your unwanted furs may also help people in need. Because of the vast number of furs that we receive, we donate many of them to homeless people who can't afford to buy their own coats—the only people who have any excuse to wear fur. Every year, PETA holds a few "fur kitchens" at homeless shelters around the country, and we've even shipped hundreds of furs to help warm the women and children freezing in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Your donation will be tax deductible. Clean your closet—and clear your conscience—by simply mailing your unwanted furs to:

PETA
501 Front St.
Norfolk, VA 23510

In this case donate the (whole) fox. They do that in Norfolk, anyway. With dogs, cats, ect. Store dead animals their.

CAUTION on this one: not for the faint hearted

This one is an outrage.
